  1. Ok so I am doing an addition and have existing 2X6 rafters but will be using 2X8 rafters on the proposed.  We have all pretty much come across this situation where we need the roofs to plane in with each other.  In the attached drawing this is what happening to the ceiling  because the wall height is lowered to accommodate the new rafters depth.  How do I change the walls to match the existing height and the birdsmouths cut is deeper?  The wall needs to come up 2-5/16" to match the bottom of the ceiling joists.  Anybody have any answers....Chief?

  2. This Raytrace took over 50 min. and had only done 6 passes.  I would agree with Kirk that if I had saved the drawing and only took a Raytrace of the area I wanted it would have been much faster.  That being said it is a waste of time either way.  I feel like I have a graphics card that should make lightspeed of this but I now feel that I need a new graphics card to keep up.

  3. Does anyone know if there is a way to edit a dimension line without the text of the dimension line itself.  I have a dimension that I don't want the text but I want my own text.  I have several pier locations and they are in a general spacing 4'-0" min. - 10'-0" max. so I spaced them at 6'0 just for clarity sakes.  Can you edit the text of a dimension line.  In that dreaded ACAD program I used to be able to edit the dim. line.

  4. I do a lot of remodels and want to be able to distinguish between the old foundation and the new foundation in plan view.  In my old program (ACAD) I would crosshatch the existing T footing or even just leave it alone but on the new footing I would poche it so the contractor would know that it is a new footing.  I am having a hard time trying to figure out a good way to do this.  If I go in and define the wall anything other than concrete is still doesn't show up in plan view but it shows up in the section view which I still want it to be concrete.  Any ideas guys?  Also, I've created a slab on grade with perimeter footings.  How can I create and interior footing below a wall that is part of the slab on grade.  Dumbfounded!

  5. Chris, would you mind posting the OP plan? I would like to look at your method for the stucco channel to polysolid groove. Nice design, BTW.

    Mike

    Ridge Runner,

I think this is what you are looking for.  Like I said, I created a Polysolid and put it on the section view of the wall along with the plan view and this created the channel that I was looking for.  Like to see what you come up with in your design as well.

    Best,

  6. hi chris,

    nice job!!

is that a translucent glass garage door you have and what did you use for the garage wall surface for get that reveal lines?

    Buzzsaw,

Yes that is a translucent Garage door that I created in Chief.  It installs just like any other door in Chief.  As for the wall surface, I created a moulding that looks like a stucco channel and made it a Polyline solid and added it to the horiz and vertical surfaces in the stucco.  It had to be a bit longer than the stucco surface so the stucco did not appear.  Hope that Answers your question.

  7. We call it a California Fill.  I came from Texas,  and we had these tie-ins there,  we never called it a California Tie in back there.  I always thought it was funny that we here in California call it a California Tie In or California Fill......  as if we here in California invented this........  hmmmm,  we probably did invent this come to think of it.

Well up here in NorCal we call it California Frame.  Anyone who comes from out of state hates it.  I come across this all the time since I mainly do additions and remodels.

  8. This is my first attempt at creating a contemporary home for a client in the Los Altos area with Chief Architect.  It was much easier that I anticipated although it is a fairly simple design.  I started this last night at about 7 pm and finished the design by noon today so I put about 6 hrs into the project and I have a complete design with a 3D rendering that I can show my client.  This is the benefit of the software when it comes to Designing a home for a client, I only wish it would fill in the blanks when it comes to the working drawings.

    Would love all your feedback.

  10. I hear ya on that Joe and automatic annotation to read our minds so we could produce plans faster and make more money and have more time off to enjoy life again.  I can't complain that I am super busy but I do enjoy playing a bit more golf and fish.

So when you say a window symbol, I am assuming that you are taking from a Pella, marvin or Andersen library and inserting it into the plan.  I have not actually tried it yet, but I am getting there

  11. I see where you are going with this Joe.  But let's say you have a 5 window boy window and you don't want 5 casement window you only want the 2 outside ones to be operable, this does not give you the option.  I know that most of my clients will be dealing with the contractor and that the window bid will be going out to Pella or to Andersen but I am just Anal I guess.  There are a lot of querks that I like and really don't like about CA and I am trying to work around them in different ways coming from an ACAD user.  Sections is really a big one for me since I had be drawing everything in AutoCAD  as I did by hand for many years and when a contractor used to say to me that my plans were off I could just prove him wrong but I guess it just takes practice and getting better at the program and making it right.  I guess it is just the learning curve frustration.

  12. Just to update... You can modify a Bow window but only from the plan view and not from the elevation view.  Also a bow window will only allow you to change one window and it will make the rest of the windows the same without the possiblity of making other windows fixed or operable

  13. Ok, I finally figured it out with all of your help but it seems to work just fine with a box window and a bay window but there is no option for changing anything with a bow window.  Has anyone else created a bow window and tried using the tab key to change the window configuration.

  14. Alright I need a bit of help.  I have a bathroom that I have created for a client and put a glass wall in the shower but some how the glass wall is picking up the material surface of the rest of the bathroom.  I have check everything, opened up the wall itself (shows tempered glass in the materials) and can't figure out why it is changing the material of what is in the bath.  The wall is even separated just to see if that would work but it still continues to change the material of the glass wall.

  15. Yeah not sure what you guys are doing but when I select the Bay window it only gives me a dialog box that modifies the overall window and not the actual window sizes even when I hit the tab key.  The tab key does absolutely nothing in regards to a pre-fab bay, bow and box window.  I have found that the only way to do this is manually create a bay window with a pass through in the wall and then make my own.  A little more time to create but without all the headache.  Why even have a tab button that creates these window if they are not modifiable.

  16. Can somebody please tell me how to change the height of Bay, Bow and Box windows?  I can figure out how to change the finish floor height but no where does it give me the opportunity to change the actual window height.  Whatever window I decide to use it always make the windows a consistent height of 36".  There has got to be a simple answer for this one.  When I click on the window the only edit I can do it the bay window size itself and not the individual windows.

Now, don't judge my rendering of my house as it is existing and I am remodeling it for a client.

    Thanks

  17. Is anyone else having a problem with CA crashing while zooming in and out as they are using a mouse wheel.  From the beginning of time my system crashes in the middle of either zooming in or zooming out only in CA.  Just wondering if I should get a new mouse or if this is a common occurrence.
