  1. Perhaps the best alternative is to have Chief make an "add-on'. I know that the heavy duty 3D solid modeling software we use for our engineering work has "add ons". if we need sheet metal, plastics or other types of materials, we just buy the on on package specific to the material we work with. Maybe chief could make one that is a more advanced package specifically for commercial design that those who do heavier commercial designing can use. Just a thought.
  2. That is nice, however, will they show up in the bom?
  3. Toasters, toilet paper rolls, trash can etc. Yep, that is what I do when I am ready to finalize the plan. Sure, I'll show lots of furnishing etc. for renderings sake and to give the client an idea of how it will look. However, when I finalize the plan, all that stuff gets trashed.
  4. Yeah, I've had some pretty big files too. I use zip file, drop box and/or a removable memory stick to move them around or take to sites or clients.
  5. Anyone ever use "Envirocast" panel? I have an email from the manufacturer who obviously wants me to spec it on a house plan at some time. If you don't know, its a type of pre-fab concrete panel used in foundations. I have looked at their specs and all seems to "look" really good, but since I've not used their product don't know how well it holds up. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of it and/or used it? Thanks.
  6. Not to be cliche, but there are plenty of training videos in the support section. They can be a wealth of information to acquire before having to post and then wait for a response. I use it when I have an issue. If I can't find my answer there, then I turn to the many brains on here that have various methods of achieving the end goal. Either way, you'll get it.
  7. This will definitely be nice to show my clients. I will still wait til march though.
  8. Thanks Lew for the clarification. Gains me a bit of breathing room for now.
  9. Sooo...is X8 truly "released" or still in testing phase? I keep seeing posts on sneak previews and beta testing etc. It is truly ready for release or not? I've used CA for years, but have never automatically jumped forward except once and that was from X6 to X7. I have X7 for almost a year now. If X8 is still in a testing phase, I see no reason to jump on board so fast until I know it is fairly stable. Anyone have an idea when we know for sure it is out of the "testing" phase?
  10. Ha! And my husband thought I was crazy for thinking of a trap door. Think of it as a reverse attic access hatch that lowers down into the level below. Or perhaps use special framing in the floor to support the edges if it opens from the top and use hidden hinges in the floor. Make it look like part of the floor in an area that does not have high traffic or cover with a rug of some sort under your coffee table.
  11. I'll use online tech support if I'm not in a hurry, but if I "need it now" I pick up the phone. So far, I've always had a live person pick up and talk to me.
  12. Well, I am not saying it is not worth it. Chief isn't the only major software my company uses. I also have 3D solid modeling engineering software. We design various things, investigate, inspect and consult on other projects among other things. In this economy maintaining a good budget is necessary as well as is cash flow for the unexpected. However, at this time, there are simply other factors that, sad to say are a bit more important right now than the SSA. I am renewing, it will just have to wait a few weeks.
  13. So just owning a copy of CA is now a "membership"? Tsk. I find that disappointing, considering there is no real "liability" to the public involved just for using the software. I can understand a late fee for a state or federal "license" but just for owning software??? I could be wrong but maybe people don't let it lapse and wait until they need something...probably do it because they don't have the funds. It is quite a nice chunk of change. Maybe CA should consider a payment plan like Softplan offers. I don't know. Right now, I have no choice but to let mine lapse. I have bigger fish to fry...called federal business taxes and liability/E&O insurance just to name a few. They will take first budget priority. So then at the end this month, I'll pay for the renewal plus the pleasure of a "late fee".
  14. If you do decide to have someone else help you...get some solid references not just on their ability to do the work, but also their character. Nothing worse than collaborating with someone who may be a great designer but have an attitude that just doesn't work or click with you.

  16. Ok, thanks for the replies. I did manage toget them to move but they still will not give me "center of openings"...thanks, I'll see what tech support has to say...
  17. I need assistance super fast. I have a plan that I am working on that I am trying to finish before leaving on vacation this Friday. Out of now where my dimensions have started going crazy! I can't get any to stick to the center point of walls or openings, I can't get any of them to move in any direction once placed on the plan. I do not have the layer locked or anything else. I've tried resetting all to defaults - no luck I have tried using manual - no luck I have tried using automatic - no luck I have tried opening and closing the plan - no luck There has to be a simple solution to all this, there most always is... I just can't seem to find it. So if any of you ladies & gents have any suggesetions I am ALL ears.
  18. I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. Apparently, the light was looking for the nearest "floor default" and since it couldn't tell where that was it jumped to the closest one. The response from tech support was to go under the "edit menu" and go to the "wrench" aka default settings. Click on floor and set the new floor default for all the rooms. Once I did that it more or less corrected all the floorsettings for all the rooms. Like I said, it had to be something simple that I missed.
  19. Tech support worked on it and solved the mystery. Even told me how to fix the problem if it ever arises again. Thanks to all for their input as well.
  20. Well, I tried a few other things but no luck. So I am going to send it to Tech support and see if they have better luck Thanks every one. I appreciate it.
  21. Ken, yes I am in the basement. Holding the ctrl key doesn't work, it just jumps right back up. Bruce, I am using X6, haven't switched to X7 yet. Had planned on upgrading afer this plan.It very well may be something small, some little thing I am overlooking. However, tomorrow is a new day and by the looks of the sky outside, I very welll may head to my own basement. Thank you guys for your input. However, It has been a long day and I am going to call it quits for now. I will give it a go tomorrow, unless I have a bulb go off during the night. Have a good evening. Thanks.
  22. I appreicate you responding to quickly. Unfortunately, I have tried dragging it, copy & pasting, and the negative # option. None of which seems to work. Like I said it is a stubborn light. I have used CA for over 13± years and this is the first time this has happened. Thus my frustration. Thank you.
  23. Good afternoon. I have a situation that I am hoping someone might help me solve. I am in progress on a plan and just happened to put a porch light/lantern outside the basement door. While it looks good on the plan it is in the wrong position. when I take an elevation shot. Instead of being by the basement door it is up on the next floor level on the exterior wall. I have deleted and re-applied the light, changed the height to center, placed different types of lights but to no avail. This stubborn porch light will not cooperate. I went through the CA help section on my computer, the CA help onine, other comment sections but not much on this particular problem. If any of you gents' have some suggestions, I am listening and your comments are appreciated. Thank you.
