CA doc indicates: "Roof overhangs are measured horizontally from the outside Main Layer of exterior walls to the end of the top of the rafter. They include fascia and shadow boards but not frieze molding or gutters. See The Main Layer" I set my wall overhang to 36" in the wall DBX and the cross section shows correct: but the roof overhang area in plan view looks to include the subfacia, but not the facia. This shows 3' to roof plane: zooming in to measure the difference between the overhang(dashed) and the roof plane yields 3/4" which is the width of the facia. Am I missing something here? when I click on help in the wall->roof dbx, it indicates: which seems to indicate it includes the subfacia AND the fascia The overall dimension from roof plane edge to roof plan edge is correct at 32;+3'+3' below shows all wall layers, showing the dim correct to the stud, so I dont think it is me picking the wrorg dimension point form the wall roof properties:

played with the wall type settings per @rgardner, and was able to get real close. I turned off the window, and turned on headers. Floor plan SPV still looks okay It would be nice to get rid of the windows.....and the miters.... floorplan SPV

played around a little, turned out pretty good for a two story single roof. It almost worked with no walls displayed(only roof overhang area displayed), except I could not get a solid line on the wall as setting the roof overhang area to dashed showed both the eave and the wall perimeter as dashed. dimension turned out really good, as did the stairs. I had to turn on Walls. railing to get the deck to show, so if I'll have to create a new layer for exterior deck railings, but that is easy. Also need a separate layer for exterior stairs, also fine so yeah turned out good, I have a miter in the corner eave, but that is fine. Only thing else I had to do, was to put a CAD marker on the pdf for the PL, as I now have it on the plan instead of on a detail. so to move the PDF to be a set dimension from the wall I have to move the marker and the PDF together at the same time without the walls on :

They have samples. and every single survey report I have ever seen does not show the inside of the building. But then again, that is a survey report, and this is a site plan, so maybe different and better. Part of it, is I do additions, so it looks kind of odd if everything else is an outline, except the addition. I think I'm going to go the live route(and check out this ariel view) and get it as close as I can and see if they balk. @rgardner, was there something special you did to not show the exterior doors (but still show a wall)? I assume you are all just going to the top floor and if you have roofs on other levels, you do a reference display in order to show eaves for both? thanks all I just checked their sample and sure enough they actually show outside windows, doors, so I think I will be close enough with the live view and the dimensions with no line

I was trying this last night, but could not get just a single line for the outside wall. It seemed to be two lines, regardless of what I tried(or a filled in two lines, which makes a really thick line). do you have a sample of what yours looks like? joey's is close but his shows two lines for walls(which may in the end not be a deal breaker). I think I tried excluding doors in the layerset before as well, but it left a gap in the wall. trying to get it to be as close to a outlined footprint as possible.. thanks

A requirement of the City is that I must put onto a site plan the following: 1. building footprint 2. decks, outside stairs 3. eaves 4. dimensions to PLs 5. dimensions of walls We are allowed to superimpose onto existing site plans. So normally I bring in the existing, plan in a CAD detail, scale it, then use the exterior room feature to create a polyline, then put that on the site plan in the proper place, then if the eaves are uniform, copy/paste concentric with the eave width. And then I dimension to PLs.. And then I manually add text for the dimensions of the walls. see screenshot below For basic things this works very well, but it has some complications I've discovered. A deck is being included in the exterior room polyline creation, which means I cannot just use the concentric copy paste, i have to chop the deck out of the building polyline first. second problem is it does not include exterior stairs or landings, so I have to manually draw the polyline and then copy to the site plan and then try and position correctly. So to eliminate me typing the dimensions, I can create a dimension set with no line via layer set. but I notice the dimension of the poly line create by the exterior room has an extra inch or so, probably for the siding. Site plans here seem to be a mixture of framing dims and actuals, with comments like "assumed stucco finish of xx". so I prefer to put as framing dims with a note that it does not include exterior finishing So no problem if I have a foundation because if I create a exterior room polyline with the foundation then i get the framed dimensions. All good, but for slab on grade construction, there is no foundation. Is there a way to get the exterior room polyline as the framed dims? Second question is, maybe there is a better way, how are people doing wall length dimensions on site plans, or do you have to? This link below suggests to do by layers instead of polylines. but if I do by layers then the whole width of the wall shows, Is there a way to only show a line for the outside of the wall? Thanks

ideally it would nice to show solid line, and dashed line a couple inches in for the rod.

@Chrisb222 how do you get the shelf to show no miter. Mine always show straight thru (as I draw it). Is there a way to draw it that it so it shows like yours and not mine?

Issues trying to trace over pdf or plans in chief

this is what I do(except i use a point to point dimension line), sometimes it takes two attempts, with the second attempt usually around 0.99 or 1.01 factor needed Trick is to use the longest dimensioned line in the pdf -
but they are actually there in the mat list, you can see them. but looking a little closer I do not think it is as smart as I thought. I think it takes the sizes from largest to smallest and fits them to the length of 2x6. I dont think it mixes and matches to optimize. If you look below it says to buy 12, but there are 26 entries. But if you kind of add as you go down(unitl you reach 92", then add a new one), you get about 12, at least by roughly adding in my head.

I actually started with the framing schedule, but my customer(the contractor, not the end customer) wanted a materials list to go buy the materials9and probably price to the end customer). The schedule list gives the cut length but not that, say four 1'10" cripples should be bought as one 2x6x8' board. The materials list has the nice feature of being able to specify "buy list" where it figures out those 4 cripples are one 2x6x8,. and if I could link it back by label to the framing elevation and floor/roof framing plan, then he could easily see which members are cut from which purchased 2x6 by Z feet and where they go. A nice little paint by numbers if I could get it to work. i.e. the framer could follow the buy list and cut, then write on the cut pieces S1, S2, etc out of the 2x6 by 8, and then know say S6 comes out of a 2x6x10'. I know when I frame, I think to myself how do I minimize the wasteage where I leave 14" boards, but more often than not, I just go buy all 8's because I am too lazy to try and figure out how many 10', 12', 8' to buy

it looks like it will not aggregate to make efficient use of 2x6s as now it looks like it aggregates by schedule name. Is there a way around this? I was hoping it would show individual members (As it does) and then the aggregated code would show the error "multiple values...." if I take the code out of the materials list it looks like:...and the counts differ (presumably because the above is aggregated by seperate schedule labels)

Is there a way to get a schedule label to show up in a material list? I have a wall detail, created a schedule, and the framing members are are nicely labelled on the framing, lables layer. I would like that label (T01,T02,...) to show up in the label (or somewhere else) in the material list. The label in the material list seems to be always blank. If I go to the actual framing member and change the label to "xyz", it shows up embedded in the description on the materials list . any ideas on if this is possible, or is there another way to link the material list to a wall detail framing member, so one can see what comes from where? (I know I can use the "find object in plan") but that does not help when viewing a printed plan) thanks

for me, I used prebuilt CAD details, so my ask is actually to be able to have the callout on an elevation tied to a named detail, and then that callout update with the layour pg number, when the CAD detail is sent to layout. I have no need for the revit detail within a detail function. or even the camera for the detail function.

Slab Not Showing In Section and 3D Views

Interesting video. They eseentially have a grid line that comes with an auto number callout. This grid line can be placed in plan view and it also shows up in section view. The detail he has is a "real" detail, in that he constructed a house to make it (As opposed to just drawn in CAD) This video shows named details, but what I notice is these are actual real details from whatever the current model is. I'm not sure I would want to annotate every single detail on every single drawing, not to mention draw in hurricane ties or anchor bolts everytime. I personally prefer reference details, that are pre-annotated, and are not spatially correct so I can annotate things like vapour barrier, typar, roof felt I think CA would have to go to named details to do something either way. Today I can have 10 details all on one detail page, and then I can send each of them to different layout pages. So CA would not easily "know" which is actually being displayed on each. That being said, you can also create 10 different details pages. So if CA were to implement such a fucntion, then one would have to follow one detail per detail page (similar to revit), which would be fine IMHO. But that does not link back from the layout page # to the callout on the elevation. But I do not see revit doing that either.. For the above revit video, I think you could accomplish the same thing in CA using cross section cameras, but it is not as pretty from the drill down perspective and does not have the camera within a camera tiering. Never saw revit before watching the videos, reminded me of when I used ACAD many years ago (makes sense as they are the same company)

how exactly does it work in the other programs? do you do a detail, it gets autoassigned a number, and then you go to a elevation and select from a drop down a callout from the available detail list? I'm curious to see if it is driven from the detail or from the callout on the elevation. It would seem ideally that you would, on an elevation or section, select from a number, description combination in a dropdown and then it places the callout number for you. Then from there, when it gets sent to layout, the program updates the callouts to have the layout page number

I was thinking that you have on your layout "Sheets 28-32" harcoded? This means if you added or deleted a sheet before 28, you would then need to change these labels. This is what I have to do (but differently because I use a callout with the page, see below). So I've been pondering having dedicated sheets names so I do not have to change them constantly. One less thing to worry about May I ask why you are using callouts on perspective view, as opposed to elevations? i.e. today I have to constantly change A13 in the callout (on my cross section) below to line up with the layout page. So if I were to re-lable the detail pages to say D-#, I can hardcode them to be D1, or in your case you could change your "Sheets 28-32" label to Sheets "D1-D5" and not have to worry about changing the labels when you insert or delete pages prior to sheet 28. But of course the tradeoff is people have to look at the index(page layout table) to see where the page number is (relative to other pages), which is why I also put the total page numbers below the sheet name in the corner. I should perhaps put the page number in as well, but maybe that is even more confusing
