  1. the screenshots you have show both floors as slab. I'm not understanding what you are trying to do, from an absolute elevation perspective. It's almost like you have a walkout basement with a stepped foundation, if the slabs are at the same elevation, but the stem wall below the slab varies from only a footing to what looks like about 3'?
  2. Is anyone admitting to not doing the recommendations? it is recommended that you either: l 1.Use the installed templates when creating new plans and layout files in Chief Architect X13 l 2. Use the installed templates as the basis for creating new custom templates. or is it a wink wink?
  3. I'm using Build->slab->Round Pier you are correct. I was incorrect in stating this: "ok, so if I change the riling wall to 5.5" then it will work because the post is now the thickness of the wall." It is as you indicate not related to the newel post (or even the manual post I have in the center of my wall) if I change the railing wall to 5.5" then it will work because the pile now centers to the railing wall center, which is now the width of the post. interestingly, it observes some other rules...like the uncheck railiing wall in ALDO behaviour where the pile will vanish even though it claims it is on the foundation layer (when you click on it and it shows the layer in the bottom of the window) i've seen this kind of ALDO behaviour before, just cannot remember where Thanks all
  4. ok, so if I change the riling wall to 5.5" then it will work because the post is now the thickness of the wall. But still, why the heck can't I put the pile where I want it....
  5. only way I can get it away from the wall is to use the cntrl key iif I only out on object center sanos it is snapping to the center of the wall, but I want the center of the post, which is 5.5"
  6. other totally oddball thing is if I turn off the wall railing layer, my piles vanish, even though they are on the "footings" layer I've seen this before just dont remember why bandicam 2021-07-26 22-08-42-828.mp4
  7. I believe it is trying to snap to the wall, just dont know how to shut that off
  8. I had them all on to begin with (and they are on my side tool bar) same behaviour. I figured turning off the snaping should allow me to place it at my will
  9. I'm building a standalone car port with railing walls generally following this: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01179/creating-an-attached-porch-or-carport.html with 6x6 posts and 10" piles. All was good until I realized the 6x6 posts were offset 1" (my wall dimension is 20', edge of post to edge of post wa 20'2"). I adjusted the balluster offset from 0" to 1" and then it moved it inside as I want it, but now I cannot center a pile below it. I tried the "move" in elevation, no luk, I tried p2p, no puck, I turned off all snaps, no luck, it just keeps snapping back to not on center, in ortho I can move the direction away from centering. I also have a manually placed post in the middle of the carport (that is another story, where I could not get the spacing more than 8') It's like it s refusing to move the pile off center of the railing wall Been at this for a good hour. Any ideas? bandicam 2021-07-26 21-32-09-588.mp4
  10. I was pointing out there were no subsections as that is what the commenter's referenced post had in it. yes there are two sections as part of the stair unit yes, same with me. The question is why can I move the stair unit around using the stairs, but when I go to move next to a wall, I then have to grab the landing. Seems odd? Me thinks there is a bug in the software. There is some oddball behaviour when you use the stair instead of the landing. I used the tab to move and it moved the stair, and the landing, but the landing not all the way. but if just go build a four wall room, add in some us stairs and move using the stair, all is well. It has something to do with me editing the landing.
  11. I logged an issue with CA support. I gotta watch some more videos, I dont know how you guys can not use the arrow keys. You must be very good at zooming in and out, and have some shortcuts for some things...I bought myself a 10key mouse envisioning I'd use a lot of shortcuts, but so far, i haven't got there yet
  12. my engineer stamps my layouts (only certain sheets) and sends them back to me. The native PDF is intact as I can still copy and paste text after he signs. He must have a PDF editor/ writer of some sort
  13. thanks @rgardner I admit I rely on the bumping a lot, whereas I should probably be using p2p as you indicate. I just tried p2p and it works, but you have to zoom in a lot to pick up the drywall and to ensure no off angle on the point move (As in this case there is no point you can align the corner of the stairs with (I suppose I could draw a CAD line)). the p2p only works if I highlight both stairs and the both landings prior to the p2p, otherwise the left landing and stair get seperated. If I just do the stair, the stair moves correctly, but the landing moves, just not to the same place (same problem as above). so lesson learned here is you can move the stair around just by clicking on one section and dragging, but once it is near the wall, you have to click select all the sections and landings and then point move or tab move; But of course, I think this is only true once one has edited the stairs, otherwise every man and his dog would have this issue I tried the tab way for the stairs, but after moving the stairs to be perfect using the tab, the landing moved part way and left 7/16" left to go for landing to the drywall. I could then go move it using the tab the 7/16, seems like a pia It will be interesting to see what CA comes back with
  14. this video also gives some good insight for those that find this post
  15. in looking at trying to do this, I deleted the landing and I could not get the stairs to move all the way to the right wall(even if i use the cntrl key). It appears the the stairs are "Stuck" to the middle wall(probably because the left side of the stair is bumping to the middle wall, hence it cannot move as the wall will not move). If I delete the wall, the stairs will move correctly to the right wall, In trying your suggestion for adding the landing with the stair tool, when I watched this CA video, it would seem it only auto places the landing when connecting connected two stairs. in my case there are two landings, so it does not work:? or does it work under certain conditions that I need to do? regardless, doing what you said, aligning the stairs first and then putting in the landing worked, but to some degree doesn't this defeat the purpose of having a U shaped stair tool? on another bizarre note, if I do not delete the landing and move the landing to the right, the landing and the stair move correctly and stay lined up, but do not go all the way to the wall, then I can either click on the landing to move it the last little bit to the wall, or move the stair to move the last little bit to the wall and they will remain lined up. Totally odd, seems to be some sort of magic number distance from the wall which alters the behaviour .. see attached. I think I will log this with CA bandicam 2021-07-25 10-34-18-587.mp4
  16. I've decided to upgrade to X13, and the upgrade instructions indicate: Although you can migrate your template files for use in Version X13, for best results it is recommended that you either: l 1.Use the installed templates when creating new plans and layout files in Chief Architect X13 l 2. Use the installed templates as the basis for creating new custom templates. Did anyone actually do one of these two options, or is everyone opening up their old templates and saving them in X13. I was thinking of doing the save as in X13 for layout files, but creating new template plans from the installed X13 template. However I notice there is no export SPV available in X12, but you can import them in X13 (or X12 for that matter) from a plan. I assume I can import the SPVs into X13 from my X12 plan? I tried it and it seems to work. I do not see any mention of it in the migration guide, and the help does not stipulate if it is only for the current version. Just wondering what everyone is doing. thanks
  17. I was thinking about the "Cabana" dimensions (and never heard of that classification before), but now I realize that was not the poster's comment. first and second floor can be certainly be done without polylines. I entered a method in the "tips and techniques" a couple months ago. Relatively simple, but also limited to simple floor areas (i.e. does not do cabanas nor porches. Only uses CA's square footage as shown in the living area label).
  18. I believe U shaped stairs are always separate sections. I do not have any subsection I see that now, the landing snaps, but the stair does not, so if I am say 1.5" away and bump it one inch to the right with the arrow key, the landing moves 1.5"(to snap to the wall) while the stairs move 1" but ... a little closer look shows the landing on top of the wall(so maybe it did not snap??), and the stair butted to the drywall. Any idea why that is? what is the landing snapping to? Thanks line weights off:
  19. it's all electronic here, but 11x17 is the minimum size. I remember the City guy here used to get his scale ruler out to check dimensions for bylaw. My guess is they probably have some electronic tool to do it now. I save to 24x36 PDF, it they want to print to some other scale, they should know that they can no longer use the ruler (electronic or otherwise). My guess is not even the framer uses a scale ruler anymore, but that is just a guess, I might just ask one next time
  20. @Joe_Carrick sells them. You may be a little disappointed to know that you may still have to draw lines around the different areas to get the actual information out
  21. i have it(stair sections move independently) not checked, which then I would think it would move with the landing. but it did not once it was near the wall I basically gave up and before creating a new u stair , made sure everything was prefect (distance between the stairs, and the width), and then slid the wall in afterward i put the new u shaped stairs in place
  22. thanks eric / @solver for future finders of this post: select roof planes click on transform replicate object check move in the Z delta, specify an amount to move check radio button "relative to itself" click ok force rebuild of truss result moved up by 8" as specified
  23. This is all I found when searching the forum, but it is not the same but it is a similar theme: Change Birdmouth Of Rafter After Roof Plane Is Built - General Q & A - ChiefTalk Forum (chiefarchitect.com) I created a rectangular house and auto built a trussed gable roof with a 8:12 itch and a 16" energy heel using the "raise off plate" in the Build roofs dbx. All is good, section shows correct heel height. . I then I edited the roof planes to change the ridge location: I then changed the right side roof plane ridge to match the left side, and locked it, which forced the pitch change on the right side. All is good, including the section. But now my customer wants a different heel height. I do not see a place to do it in the Edit all roof planes dbx. And because the roof planes are now edited I cant put on the "auto rebuild" in the build roof dbx (Without it telling me it will remove my manually edited roofs) Is there a way to change the heel height AFTER the roof planes have been edited? or do i have to rebuild the entire rood and redo the manual roof planes? thanks
  24. I'm getting a little frustrated with these u shaped stairs and landings, as when I try and resize things not everything resizes (which if fine, I'll live with that). But I then I spend the time to align, and then I move and then it no longer aligns, any ideas why? bandicam 2021-07-14 18-28-19-041.mp4
