  1. My exteriors show proper which is the most important my exteriors, but if you find a fix for the interior wall that would be appreciated!
  2. Thank you, Sir! That makes perfect sense to me. Great job
  3. Can anyone look into this please? I cannot get my brick to sit on top of my foundation wall. It wants to go into my foundation wall. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OeaKBstovBhJQE--_gbhkzjOVX0CXOBC/view?usp=sharing Thank you, Steve
  4. The one thing I am learning with X16 is to use the HDRI backdrops. I have included some I liked. This makes the house look more real. I still use the X15 background images for some work as you can see above, but there are times on my computer that some kind of light washes them out, makes vertical light strips on it But I like to use the HDRI backdrop with the background images because I can get nice window reflections with it. Big thing is to find a process and reproduce it. With each rendering there is always some tweaking. I also use a few of Chiefs 3d trees to cast shadows vs the 2d trees I include. 2D trees just do not give a good result.
  5. I have not figured out why. I plan to just use the spline tool for drawing and converting it into a terrain spline.
  6. One thing I requested, and it goes against the realistic idea of a spherical backdrop, is to allow both the same backdrop or even a second backdrop to be used and controlled for reflection in the windows/glass. I may want an image of open planes and a mountain in my background, but reflect a forest of trees or a lake of another image in my windows. Also on your list is the height adjustment for the reflection. Currently it only reflects whatever the backdrop was captured as, and no control over lifting or lowering the reflective background.
  7. Thank you! I love the rotator tool. It does not have an end like within the DBX - thank you for sharing
  8. Photoshop also has a specific DBX to modify HDR images...
  9. Changing the Resolution to something higher makes no difference. Chief must have a set diameter that it is setting the image size. Right now you can change the Horizontal Tile to 2, to push it away. You can use Photoshop, Camera Raw Filter... to mess with the greens and blues and other settings.
  10. Changing the paper size does not change the image size
  11. Hi Joe, You can control the size of the backdrop by increasing the Horizontal Tile to 2 - I have done this a few times to push the background away from the model a bit. You may also need to control the Vertical Max and Min to bring it back into the right perspective. The only thing I think will work is to move the whole model to more of the center of the default paper size location (I use "D" size). I have not tested if changing the paper size would make a difference - seems like it would. hmmm
  12. You can find these HDRi backgrounds on the web for free, so I put them together into a X16 Library. 500 Mb File... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z1TXAw3rGEmUVDoaQRbxZ93hxoDGFc0Y/view?usp=sharing These are 4K. The last backgrounds I uploaded some time ago were 8k which are too large for most computer setups.
  13. Losing a file is extremely frustrating, but Chief has this area covered very well once you know what you want to set up. Also look into something like IDrive. It backs up with versioning in real time. Then if I were you, I would delete this post. Also, search around, there are a number of users that provide training. I would strongly recommend training to save yourself months of frustration.
  14. I'm using the advanced Spline tool - then I can make one segment and spline it - works very nice.
  15. I drew several elevation splines on the front with the right mouse to keep it continuous, but then when I added a new spline to the rear of the house with the right mouse each segment is disconnected. Thoughts?
  16. Rendering Materials and Libraries Update for X16... I am putting together the floor plans and now renderings for a condo project. I am posting this here because this is a continuation of the rendering method I proposed in the beginning of this thread. I am using this method to render some of my projects. I needed to put together 5 renderings, and while the first took about 90 minutes, the last two renderings were done in under 45 minutes. As you learn more about Terrain Features, using them to make driveways, sidewalks and landscaping beds, you can begin to set up defaults or parts that can be brought into your model that already have the materials and properties you end up using over and over. The Landscape Library has a few new trees (not Chief) and are larger in file size (Tree01 and Tree02). There are also a number of Hosta plants that are now available to use in X16. The library also has a number of the objects like Grunge, Grade (lawn plants and leaves) and Shadow trees (which I do not use. But if you have a smaller graphics card, they can help with rendering speed.) X16 now supports HDRi backdrop images. I am including a library of some images I put together. HDR08 is what I use now for the "Backdrop" image vs one I made for X15. HDRi images do a better job of creating tree and sky reflections in your windows. X16 Drawing Template I am also including my Template as it includes a number of cameras that you can copy and paste into your templates. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YAeQKPG87YFoMC9O5Y0-QKWe5EWF_1tT/view?usp=sharing X16 Landscape Library https://drive.google.com/file/d/111cmp7Qe5UIKMqgmQ9rJ_fLWURjj_4eQ/view?usp=sharing X16 HDRi Backdrop Library (used for more realistic backdrops, or for window reflection as I am using them) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EuUVvrhFGBC4eX5VG54TbrqtAF3dndk9/view?usp=sharing X16 Background Image Library (used for the background images you see in the rendering) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UIMoHnTTF5t9gnd0F_OjR7d0rfcs5Pbl/view?usp=sharing See the beginning of this thread for rendering method... Thank you, Steve
  17. I got it. I just needed to add a Bearing Line...
  18. I'm not sure what to do to fix this. I have not had a problem before with joist direction Second floor is fine Main floor gives me an error when I place the joist direction markers Thoughts? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qu35lF3bMFMOizIcCM76nuGQ5Zf57kEF/view?usp=sharing
  19. I use moldings for a number of my millwork pieces because of the wood grain. See the post at the bottom for more details on that. Here is a video that shows how simple it is to make a point on the end of a molding... https://my-plan.stevenyhofdesigns.com/v/NRDkY7n18LVM2ZowAbCb
  20. Here are a few... This was more of a process in testing to find ways to draw cathedral ceiling beams with the correct wood grain... Chief does not have good garage doors so I made up a few... And this one, another thread about simple rendering one why with some backgrounds I made from Twinmotions, and ended with some pretty nice looking renderings done completely with Chief. Here are some backdrops I made for daily working within Chief. Stem walls using alternative methods...
  21. Unlike AutoCAD and others, Chiefs walls, roofs, etc. all work together within a relationship with each object/element to seam things together. Softplan and Cedreo use this same type of relational modeling. Some just do it better than others. To answer your "interesting" query, I have been designing with CAD since the late 90's. It does not take me long to know if a piece of software can do what I want or not. Even when Chief shows us things like auto trusses, I step out of the box for only a moment (meaning, do something a bit more complex) and Chief falls apart. It is these types of things that I would test or spend a few minutes in forums to find out what others are running into to not even bother with a trial. I know of Architects that do such complex work that Chief needs to turn into a manual solid tool (like AutoCAD) just to pull it off. I love Chief and it's automation, but I have also spent time building tools, solids, materials that help me where Chief's automation fails. So far I have been drawing about 120 plans a year with Chief on my own, and few are very simple like they were just 10 years ago when every builder and realtor were building spec homes. You've been here for almost 10 years. I see you have Softplan on your list of tools you use. What is your thoughts on Softplan vs Chief?
  22. It was a number of things I do not really recall, but a number of the questions people were asking and the answers that were given. I could tell in a few minutes that Chief was ahead of the game with this type of relationship modeling.
