That's what I would try Rob.. I'm not sure if that is why your ceiling joist are wacked, but if I don't need a room definition, then I usually do a slab then do the roof on top. I model my own post and beams anyways, so it isn't to much of a bother. Railing walls are some time finicky..
Yeah, the ceiling joists still aren't wanting to mitre even with a manual slab drawn with now definition. I gotta outsmart this I guess just to get the drawing done.

Hey Guys, I am designing a simple carport for a client. On this project they already have an existing slab, I am not sure what it once was, maybe a parking pad. The builder wants to to bury the posts on the outside of the slab and let me tell you right now CA doesn't like that. It is messing up my roof and ceiling joists. The LVL's are on the outer edge of the posts which makes the roof "baselines" messed up or something. I need to mitre my joists manually or something. Any suggestions, see below? I wish I could figure out how to ask this in a more understanding way but I can't.
My existing slab is built with railing walls by the way. Maybe try and erase those walls and build a simple "slab" with the slab toolbar?

z moving...one of the first great tidbits I learned from @solver before he left the forum
I was wondering why he didn't chime in anymore. He decided to quit CA?

A few things I was able to do on my end.... Might help you get somewhere on this issue.
1. Under the Walls DBX >> Structure >> Under "Platform Intersections" Try turning off the radio box "Invisible Walls and Railings - Generate Between Platforms"2. Also, I created a small invisible wall on the inside edge of the railing so that the bordering wall of the hole is not the exterior railing.
3. Another thing I noticed is that the higher exterior boards are being generated by the floor depth of the particular floor, check that on the room definition of the hole.4. Last thing I tried is just cutting a hole in the deck with a poly line and adding the stairs.
A combination of these things might get you moving in a better direction. Good luck.
Thanks, I had the porch -3 1/2" so I had to compensate in structure tab to subtract that from the taller "walls".

This has probably been asked before. Since we have options for frieze boards at the top of the wall is their an option in CA to get trim boards at the bottom of the wall without having to do 3d molding polylines around the home? I have always drawn them manually with the general framing tool but want to make different profiles now kind of like my window lintel type.

check the floor elevation in the foyer, it needs to match the others to be level. I always have the floor levels macro added to my room labels so I can see it instantly while working.
this fixed it, thanks!

7 years of CA experience here and I still don't understand the macros and haven't taken the time to learn.

make sure the porch is lower than the house level and make the porch & footings slab pour level 2
I remember seeing that option but forgot where in the settings.

Why is that crazy? Indoor gyms, swimming pools, basketball courts, gun range...
Pools I can do, gyms I can do, but not knowing anything about a shooting range is where I am at.

Here is a good source for information. https://spireranges.com/how-to-build-an-indoor-shooting-range-backstop/#:~:text=A backstop comprises an earth, boundaries of the shooting selection.
And this video might make your client think twice about putting one inside. $400K is a big tab. The really easy way is an outdoor range with a berm backstop of one made of a bunch of railroad ties, but you need a huge country lot on which to do that.
Thanks Gene.....good info

Hey @winterdd, perfect timing... my new code books just showed up today... and yup, nothing yet about guns in the Canadian Building Code either that I could find lol...
A couple of local-to-you places may offer some insight of the logistics, 1) you probably already checked with a gun store close by that knows of someone that has an in-house range. 2) check with any other businesses that require an explosion room. I remember the city bus barns (of all places) that needed to install an explosion proof room to store the shop explosive items (and yes, from experience, gas cylinders really do act like missiles under the right conditions...). The specs might be different, but the logistics and legal requirements may be similar.
Around here, people just slide open the window and shoot at the squirrels and crows from the kitchen... where they can't see you coming ....
This is a cool one, keep us posted.
Will keep ya posted, I don't expect this one to be as quick of a turnaround as my usual homes. Huge sq footage and a shooting range. Glad to have structural engineers I can reach out too for the opportunity.

It might be less of a basement and more of a concrete bunker. Might want to find out what kind of weapons they are planning on using and what kind of blast rating they need. Also, make sure you don't piss them off.
haha for real!

I am sure you guys get some unusual requests doing what we all do on here. I am meeting tomorrow with new clients for an 8000-10,000 SF home they want to build. They want a shooting range incorporated in the home, that is all they said and admitted it was a crazy request. I bet this is not going to be your standard wood type framing on it. Would you get an engineer involved ahead of time and work the project together on something like this? Has anyone ever done one?
I am picturing a basement foundation for this but we don't do basements down here in bama.

Because the fireplace on technically in a different room. Make the wall in front of the fireplace NO ROOM DEFINITION and see what your results are.
That is a good explanation man. Thanks & will do.

you should
Thanks anyway Rene, I will upgrade this year. My biggest holdup is my library getting exported so I don't lose anything. I haven't mastered that yet and is always an issue.
