Here is a simple example.
For the 24' 0 5/16 dim, I cannot select it by first selecting the vertical walls to its left or right. I can get to the dim only by first selecting the line itself. But what if I want the wall to its right to move?
Also, top horiz dim total does not equal bottom horiz dim total. Off by 1/2".
These are just two of the many issues preventing me from a clean layout, dimensioned correctly.

Is the a video of someone fully dimensioning a house showing every step and leaving out none?
My dimensions change and my horizontal top nevers equal my horizontal bottom.
And my vertical left never equals my horizontal bottom.
If I could achieve this I could lock the layer and move on.
-
Suggestion:
I believe it would be so simple for CA to add a 'right click-lock' to each section of wall...like this.
Create first wall section. Dimension it. Lock it.
Create section wall section. Dimension it. Lock it.
Create third wall section. Dimension it. Lock it.
...
Create last wall section. Dimension it. Lock it.
Then there could never be dimensions changing on you.

Might try drawing a rectangular poly line around the area you want to move, with the poly line selected, go to edit>edit area> visible area> transform/replicate in the direction you want. I did show you how to do this a while back.
Yes, but that isn't a normal dimensioning technique. That is for when you get yourself in a bind and is a a way out.
If you have just created a new connected series of walls and begin dimensioning them do you normally have to do the poly line select and transform replicate technique?
I thought you could just go around a loop and change one dimension after another.

Try changing the niche wall back color to black and it moves down behind the lower pony wall.
Strange. Can color affect position?

I would love to see a video on this specific case if someone had the time to demonstrate.
Thanks all!

I am seeking further clarification on this topic. Here's my question.
The rule seems to be (select the line you want to move then select the dimension of the line whose length you're modifying.)
So in the example below if I want to lengthen C, I first select B then it B will move left wrt C.
But
does the B moving left wrt C also take A with it or
does A length shorten wrt B to keep the start of A the same? I think it does.
If the latter do I need to multi-select both A and B first before selecting the dimension of C so both A and B will move to the left wrt C when I lengthen C?
If draw a selection box around A and B and then increase the length of C, I get a gap between B and C.
I'v had this problem since day one, even if work clockwise or counter-clockwise. I always have dims change on me.

Good one Eric! I was just now building one for my library for future. Good to have on hand because this is getting more popular in the residential industry. At least for me it is.
How did you achieve this? My base molding disappears when its offset is negative.

Yes, very helpful! thanks.

Just create a polyline solid as a large triangle say 1 1/2" thickness on the gable face and then create 4 triangular holes in it.
Holes?

Thanks, I've just seen the effect of creating in another program a gable bracket and importing into CA.
When I export the house to 3DS for import into Lumion, and then import into Lumion, the gable bracket is no longer where it should be.
When I do it with the library symbol, it stays in place!
-
I can't think of a way in CA to create the decor under the gable other than going to another plan and creating in 2D and copying it into the main plan, then moving it around in 3D. What is the easy way to do it?
-
Recently I have been given some good advice that it is better to not make an entrance sign under a gable roof (in another program), import and reposition using either
1. transform/replicate object
or
2.open symbol ,
in favor of doing something like making it with a door and modifying it.
So my question is where do you draw the line between doing the (door) technique and making an object outside of CA and doing the import/move in 3D procedure.
What about the decorative object under the gable roof, in the photo?
Maybe a better way to pose the question is, in general, what objects should better be created outside of CA?

Hi CA gurus,
Is there a way to zoom in and out in 3D... in inches rather than in feet and yards, using the middle scroll wheel?
If I am a yard or two away from my house, one tick of the scroller puts me inside the house.
Thx

As you go on, you'll eventually find out that some things will only be able to be done using a 3D molding poly line. Graham described it well.
I finally figured out how to make the entrance with just a wall and a door. Much easier not adjusting x,y,z many times to position! Thx
-
Very strange. I was able to move both types in the x,y,z using transform/replicate object button.

Is there a difference? I created the same 3D object using both. They both look 3D to me in the 3D view but the molding polyline has a double line in the plan view, while the 3D molding polyline has only a single line in the plan view. I am not getting what use this distinction serves.
Tried to find in the manual but in the free reader, it scrolls to fast and there isn't a search box.

I can eyeball it but doesn't feel precise.
Thx

For example, to create the arched front entrance you went through the process of building an arched section, converted it to a symbol and then manually positioned it. This however could have been accomplished by inserting a door into the wall and using the Arch function, now your arched opening can be full controlled
Thank you for your suggestions.
I suppose the reason I didn't use a door is because (as far as I know) CA cannot combine a tudor arch with a round arch (essentially the structure whose heals sit on top of two columns. If CA can achieve that, I need to know about it.
When you say why not start with a 3D polyline, I have not found a drawing tool called that. I had to do a lot of digging even after people told me how to do it, to accomplish it, since it's a lot of menu picks. Maybe my menus are not set up like everyone else's.
Too bad the menu isn't set up like...
Sketch
3D Polyline
Polyline
Primatives
Points
Splines
Bezier Curves
etc.
Then, I know I want to create a shape so I pick one.
The way I see it now, the line, arch circle, box and spline seem to be right there as if to say start with these. I'm wondering why there isn't an icon for a 3D polyline along with those.
I am in the process of reading the manual so I know I'm showing my ignorance of most of it.
I feel I'm getting better with each job and definitely appreciate how generous everyone in this forum has been.

Here's how to make a 3D Molding Polyline object.
1. In 2D make a cross section that is perpendicular to the object face you wish to add to.
2. Use the drawing tool to create a path for a section (you will pick in the step 5).
3. Right click on the polyline and select "convert CURVE TO polyline".
4. Adjust number of sections.
5. Double click on polyline.
4. Select "3D molding polyline".
5. Select a molding section from the library and click ok.
6. You won't see it in the cross section but you will in the 3D. (Note...it may be hidden behind another object so you'll have to adjust the y variable to get it in correct location.

Dimensioning so previously dim'd don't move

Clearly, I'm doing things incorrectly. I'm trying to find a way that can work. One way is fine. But I have soooooo many problems getting a simple layout to be correct.
