  1. I wonder why theres such a file size difference between the different versions?
  2. Thanks Tommy and Mick for the details. Tommy and Mick you always sound like chief experts you have such great answers to everyones questions. I never knew this about chief with the molding profiles...thanks for sharing!
  3. Thanks Chopsaw. I just wondered if you could use existing profiles that are in the library and add one after another as needed. Sounds like you have to draw a custom profile. Thanks for the reply.
  4. I know for roofing and room moldings you can build them up to make a more complex molding. Can anything be done like this for door casing? Especially the front entrance doors sometimes require something more intricate and detailed. I cant seem to add another casing to it. Besides polylines is there another was to do this in the door dbx? Thanks!
  5. Very interesting Eric, I never thought about drawing the wall opposite direction...Im going to give it a try! Thanks so much for the reply, hope you had a nice weekend.
  6. I have a couple questions... 1. Does anyone know how to control the base molding on the bottom of the glass shower wall? It doesnt seem to go away because in the rest of the room there is base molding. I just dont want it against the glass wall. 2. Does anyone know how to control wall behavior as it pertains to snaps? Problem is I wanted the solid wall to come out about 3" past the glass sheet wall. Well whenever I make any adjustments to either wall they snap together, thus giving you the wood stud exposed. Thanks!
  7. Thanks for the replies. When I get X10 I will come back to this post to pick up the nice brick Sill Michael...thanks again for the efforts! Chad
  8. Yeah that would be nice to be able to go to a website to see everything youve designed. Also, I tried opening the file you posted but was that designed in X10? It wouldnt open for some reason Im using X9. I tried Eric plan and his was in X9 so it opened fine but this one for some reason wont work.
  9. Great thanks Michael. Do you by chance have a website with chief stuff that you have built like symbols and such? I know there are a lot of chiefers who have tutorial videos and symbols they sell. When you mentioned your creative content I figured Id ask because I didnt see a website link on your signature. Thanks again to everyone for their input!
  10. Michael, your brick sill looks a lot better then mine! I made my sill many years ago when chief just first came out with the tutorial for this. Yours looks cleaner and less grout lines. Eric and Michael the sample sills you posted are they for us chiefers to use? I dont assume things posted are gifts for others to use without asking the creators of the symbols first!
  11. Wow Im blown away at all the responses... I havent been able to get back on Chieftalk for two days and a ton of information...thanks for the replies! The reason I used the brick sill is because Chief came out with a special help article on how to make a brick sill molding. For years Ive used this molding and have had zero issues. Ive read all the feedback but realize that chief must have changed something in X9 (thats what Im currently using) because the same method as previous versions using the brick sill dont work. Here is a pictures of a design I started in 2014... I cant remember what version of chief was out in 2014 but I had no problems with the sill and you just selected recessed into wall and it was great. Years back chief came out with a custom brick molding you could use for a sill... I just did a search for it but couldnt find the sill but the soldier course trim here it is... https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00797/creating-a-soldier-course.html I had a few questions based on some of your comments... 1. Eric- how did you get that sill when I didnt see that in any of my standard sill profiles? Was it a custom you made? 2. Tommy- sounds like a great variety of window sill you have... did you custom make those or was it an outside manufacture you got those from? If you compare the two sill pictures I have on here you can see how correct the same exact molding profile displayed back in 2014 chief and the same sill displays in X9....Im not happy with the results. Maybe a chief technical support person will chime in here and let us know if there were any software changes made to affect this option or perhaps a new way of selecting something else in the dbx that can achieve the same results.
  12. Thanks for the replies. Eric I really liked your ceiling plane idea... I will give that a try!
  13. Yes I agree Perry. I found for me the copying the plan and pasting in the new version was less problematic and allowed me to use the new versions features. Where when I just opened the old plan from long ago and used it in the new version it had problems. Glad I finally figured out the best way to deal with this! Thanks for the input.
  14. Thanks Chopsaw for letting me know... I just wanted to know that there actually was a selection on the roof DBX that takes care of this. I didnt realize there were so many changes with the roofing dbx since I normally dont deal with this type of roofing type. Yes, I think if I continue having roof issues I might have to schedule something with Tommy. Thanks for the reply!
  15. Just an update to anyone who might be debating what the best policy for working on old plans in newer chief versions. I found the best results for me is when I edit all floors and copy and paste into a brand new latest version of chief. I noticed using the old version and bringing it forward it doesnt allow all the benefits of the latest version to work properly. I noticed especially in shadows and 3d overview a huge difference, also a difference in texture views and clarity. Im glad I tried both methods and found the best one that works for me. Thought Id pass on my experience with this issue in hopes it might help someone else. Thanks! Chad
  16. I finally got the rafters to look decent but did notice that the wood for the roofing looks unfinished with the wood finish and I cannot paint it. I also noticed you can see through the roof in between the rafters. Is there a selection on the roof dbx that fills this in? Thanks! Chad
  17. Does anyone know how to get the brick sill to move inside towards the window versus just sticking outside the wall? I do have the recessed into wall selected. Thanks in advance! Chad
  18. Tommy, thank you so much for the generous offer, you clearly go above and beyond the normal level of help offered and I greatly appreciate it. I dont want anyone spending extra time on this though on my behalf, so tonight Im going to just read the article and play around the with the roof functions and figure it out. I know its chief so even though its much different then past versions I can probably get it to look the way I want. Thanks again for being so nice! I will pay the kindness forward to another in need if I am able to help them, thanks again. Chad
  19. I havent had to use this option in many chief versions and thus things have changed. What is the best and quickest way to create exposed rafters? Im looking for something quick for RT not for full framing and CD creation. Thanks! Chad
  20. Ok great. I just wondered if by carrying over an x4 file it brings along any kinks or incompatibility to the file? versus just coping and pasting the entire plan into a brand new fresh x9 folder? I thought I once was told the copying pasting technique ensures you have a brand new file that doesn't collect any lint from past versions. Just wanted to check with you guys.
  21. Can someone tell me if theres a difference between the two in Chief... 1. Taking an old plan from X4 and opening it in X9 and continue working on the project from there. 2. Taking the old plan from X4 and copying all floors and opening a brand new plan in X9 and pasting all floors. I have tried both with some issues with both. Im wondering if there is actually any differences or is it similar? I was thinking the best possible solution to bringing old plans forward were to use the copy paste into a brand new file from X9 but Im unsure. Thanks for your help! Chad
  22. Michael, Thanks for the clarification. I didnt really know what the uses were for those other two applications so thanks for the examples. Funny how you can use chief for 15 years and know most things really well but then still learn new things with different tools...I love that. Thanks again!
  23. Nice! Like those solutions Im going to do that from here on. Dermot my question is if you have to extrude the molding so that it goes to the outside of the building and can be used inside the home why three choices of molding selections? Also what would the use be for the other two applications? If you can double click in any room and put a molding up anywhere why would you use these other tools? Clearly Im missing the benefits of these other molding tools.
