To display the value on the schedules insert you Ruby macro into one of the Object Information fields. Now add this field to your Door and Window schedules....

BT-not sure I'm doing this correctly? I did create the custom object field (just to start only one window). I did add it to my door and window schedule, but do they update automatically?   The Column I added for the Height of the headers did not update.

I Have always installed Doors and Windows before any finish floor is installed, hence measurement would be from sub floor.

    Have a great week ,Ken

ME too Ken (I've been building for 50 years) The client said he wanted the framer wanted the Header Height from FF (I didn't give it a second thought) although I changed that column in my Schedules to read Header Height ASF (above sub floor) I didn't catch it until I got called out by you guy's.  We ALL had a good laugh (I suppose).

Assuming there was, how hard would you push your tape measure into plush carpet?;)

Keep it simple Bob, use the sub-floor elevation! IMO AFF should be used to reference other finish items.

The AFF was an honest mistake... the subfloor is 5/8 and yes. They want the header height from the subfloor.

You can use the object properties macro in a textbox to see what's available for an object.

In this case there is a header_elevation.

You would need a really simple macro that returns this value.

I used the macro in the Code field instead of creating a custom field.

Eric you always make it look easy!  I will experiment to see if I can figure it out.  Not tonight though too much other stuff to get done. The excavator has started clearing his site, so I may have a day or two before he starts pushing me for it.

I could set one up for you.  Sent you a PM.

Thanks Michael.  I saw it and will consider it for sure, sounds reasonable enough! Since I am not making my living with CA, it may be a one time thing for me? Its the first time I've had a client ask for this in particular.  I hadn't included framing details as part of his package and I guess he thought he could get this free from mean. After all?

Are you asking about framing -- the header over a door?

Eric, what I was asking is if there is a macro (I didn't see one) that I could insert into my Door and Window Schedules that would automatically calculate what height the header (from the floor) is for each door (more particularly windows as they are not all the same header height) ? I know I can calculate it from the floor to bottom plus window RO height, I was looking for a quicker way without the manual input. I was going to do wall framing details but the client said his framer would only ask for each header height to be included in the Window (and door) schedule.

  7. I don't suppose there is a macro (I'm not good at creating them) that I can find / use to insert in my Door and Window schedules to auto calculate the Header height from finished floor (AFF). I did open wall framing DBX for some walls that have either a door or window, but did not see where the HH AFF could be called out automatically. I suppose I have to go into the schedules themselves and edit each one manually?   I did add a column for the HH AFF insertion. Just got to figure out how to edit the text in that column. I will when I get the opportunity.

  8. The eye-dropper to take the color form the balusters and apply to the posts doesn't work? If you created your own material using Insulation air gap, why couldn't you use anything else like a custom counter top set to thickness, size you need, and set the material to a white color? (I think that would work too, maybe not?).

  9. Brad, why not send that question over to Mac's tech or sales group to see if they have any history on it? I haven't a clue but over the days - months- years of being on Chief talk don't ever remember seeing anything other than a few posts on using the 3D mouse with other systems.

    The bevels would be difficult.

However, you can use a small "Wall Material Region" (transparent material) with "Cuts Surface Layers" to get a fair approximation.

Another option is to use one or more Molding Polylines with several moldings stacked to add the Blocks outside of the wall finish layer.

Joe, I'm curious, could a molding poly line, (to the desired shape) converted to a custom back splash, with an added molding (applied to the)  edge be any simpler? Wouldn't that forgo the need for normal maps and the extra work?

YES! Taking off the paint layer resolved not seeing the drywall board! Thank you.  BUT... still seeing all those extra lines in camera and elevation views.

My plan is too large to post it says.  36 MB. Says max is 25 MB.... deleted all furniture, framing etc etc and still not under 30MB. Guess I can't post it.

While the plan is closed, go to the file it is saved in right click, then click on send to> compressed or zip file, then come back here and post the zipped / compressed plan file. It should be under the limit when zipped.

zoom in and update the view, the closer you zoom in the finer it will refresh but when you print it will automatically update to the final quality. This could be wrong but I believe its the way chief handles images to keep things running faster/smoother and not bog down.

I zoomed in as far I could withou running out of screen.

Mick, I’ve been doing PNG images (versus using PDF) I was hoping I find a way to just send to layout.
    thanks

  13. My search of the forum didn’t bring a topic up addressing this particular question. How do I adjust the size of a perspective view before I send it to layout? Is that in editing the active camera settings?

When is end to layout it is so small you can’t see any detail. Grabbing the drag handle and doing a concentric enlarge makes the view blurred. I know it is a simple answer, but I haven’t found it yet?

    Thanks

  14. I use a room poly line, convert to molding poly line, in the CAX11 library choose the "L" wall molding to assign to the MPL. For the "T"'s I first find the CL of the room both directions, in my case my clients prefer the 2X2 pattern, draw a line, full length both directions, convert to MPL, assign the "T" molding from the library; then I set up the 2X2 off the CL's, then multiple copy.  In the room DBX  I set the ceiling finish as the Lay in tile. Of course you set the offset from floor when you set up the first MPL's and that should replicate each time. You can place lay in lights, where needed then with little difficulty, but be sure to drop them about 1/2" lower than the ceiling off set, in my case it was the only way to get them to show in full camera view. If you do a full camera the issue that will show up is getting the lights to show properly placed in the grid pattern, and that takes some work (if it is important) you will have to adjust the "texture" by playing with the "X" "Y" offset. It hasn't been an issue with the clients I've worked with so far, so I don't spend the time. Once I got the routine down it worked pretty fast.

They are shadows from something, just open up your camera DBX and uncheck shadows, they disappear. I looked around your plan and there are many areas where there are major gaps in the ceilings and walls extending into the attic. This is most likely causing the problem.

that fixed it, thanks Graham!  I still have to clean up some things on the inside.  I'm working on finding what's causing the gaps.

  16. Anyone had this happen?  I thought I had painted a color on a library object (without knowing it) but I can't get the strange (grayish) color to go away. I checked the symbol, etc., (a tub shower from the library) it is supposed to be white in the object DBX, and is to some degree. The strange color has also bled into part of a near by door.. no matter what render style I use it shows up?

I thought it was a shadow, but no matter which way I move the camera it is still there.  Video card?  But this is the only item / time it has happened.

YARBRO RESIDENCE ADDITION ROOF OPTION 2.zip

  17. The differing wall heights were a challenge in building my roofs.  I started off doing roofs manually, (because the first few times using the auto build roof) made a crazy mess; but after reaching out (via email) to some great Chiefer's (who didn't have time to help and I totally understand) I sent the plan to GLenn Woodward, and as he has always been great to help me, worked with me patiently and got me back on track. The resultant roofs looked great, and after the client spent the better part of this afternoon in my office requesting the roofs be massaged a little more, they are now exactly what the client was wanting. Thanks again GLenn, I wish I could give back but you'll never need my help for anything I'm sure!
