Bob, I do an as-built "shell" of the existing house and save it as a symbol. I then import it into the new plan on it's own layer and lock it. I then position it as necessary in relation to the new construction. All of the elevations will show correctly and you don't have to fiddle with things changing on the existing structure.

Mike, I'll have to give it try when I get started.  You don't have to save the Elevations of the Existing house as separate Symbols too? I guess I don't understand how saving the as built as a symbol will give the software what it needs to produce the elevations, too?

    Thanks for the input.

Why not draw them both in the same plan? Think house and detached garage ...

I haven't tried it since X9, but I was helping a church with design of a new sanctuary, and they had an existing building they had used as a life center / temp church. Code wanted to see it so I attempted drawing the new on the same plan as the existing. The problem there is there was about a 5' diff in floor elevations (they were about 150' between the two building, (less experience then than I have now)  and when setting the floor elevations every time I set the one, the other changed to the same elevation.  Similar issues with other issues.  I didn't understand anno sets / Layer sets, then, as well (no expert now by any means) as I do now so you know how hard it was for me to get it all done. That's why I was nervous about trying it on this one.

Just create a CAD Block of the existing Site Plan [ CAD Detail From View ] and place that in the plan for the new home.

    - or -

Go the opposite and just superimpose a CAD Block of the new home on the existing's Site Plan.

Either of these will work - I would personally opt for the second.

I think I understand this Joe, but I need to show the Elevations of the New home (minimum of 4) with the Existing home. I guess I do the same thing, create CAD blocks of each of the Elevations of the Existing home, and superimpose them in the Elevations of the New Home?

  4. Setting up my template plan for the next project to start as soon as I complete the CD's on the current job.  The client wants to add a two bed home for his dad and mom to live on his property in their own home.  I don't need to model the interior of the Existing home, in order to draw the new home, however; both code and the HOA want to see the new home in relationship to the Existing home, roof plan, side walks, drives, minimum 4 exterior elevations to show (architectural integrity etc.) so the new home is in keeping with the existing homes exterior architecture.  I know of course to set up all my defaults for this project before I draw the first wall.  I need to set up (the terrain I think in this case) any new wall type that I don't already have available in my wall type menu. The HOA wants the roof line, fascia design and elevation to match the existing as close as possible. The short story is I need to get the terrain elevations correct, and  draw the existing home's exterior and once that is all in good order, design the new home.

After reading the help files on this particular operation,  the implication is (I should draw this as if it were being placed in a subdivision?)

I need to then export the existing home out of X11 as a 3D symbol, and then import it into the terrain / plan of the new home in order to show the proper relationship. The client wants the elevation of the slab of the new home set at the same elevation as that of the existing home. There is an approx. 3 to 4 foot slope down hill from the existing to the new home (the new will have to be on a raised foundation). So importing the existing home  into the new plan as a 3D symbol, doesn't really help me understand how to show the plan of the Existing Home (Roof plan / exterior walls) drives and walks without actually drawing it in the same plan as the new home. Am I wrong here?  Won't what ever I draw or change if I draw the existing home in the same plan as the new, won't  the changes I make drawing the new home affect the Existing Home as well?  I have other questions I will post in a new thread.

In Chief, choose Library , import library, browse to your Manufacturer Libraries folder (where you copied everything to) and select the files it import.

Then update the library.  In Chief, Library, update library catalogs.

Maureen, I have everything now except what  appears to be a hundred or more missing textures in my User library for items I down loaded from DMD site, From 3D Warehouse, and some I created and I haven't a clue (if it is even possible) now; where they have flown to? So I guess If I run into the opportunity, to; I'll have to down load them all over again. I would like to be able though, to upload everything to a cloud server of some sort, so what ever computer I'm on (office or home) I can down load the project I'm working on and have access at the same time to all my libraries wherever I'm working from> right now after all the trouble I've caused myself attempting just to get the Libraries loaded on my home DK, I'm nervous about even attempting another ELECTRONIC MIRACLE...………..:) just not sure the CA Force will be with me????

    Looks good to me.

I just downloaded the Woodland catalog and instead of installing it, I unzipped it and copied the .calib file into the manufacturer directory. Opened Chief and it shows in the library browser.

Don't know what else to suggest.

Thanks for sticking it out with me Eric.  I just saved the woodland cat like you said, and when I select it all the items show.  Only thing it appears that I need to do and don't know if it is possible, is see if I can find some of the missing materials and textures I had before the computer crashed Monday.   I guess they're gone forever.  I probably won't need them until I need them.....right?

Go to the chief site. Pick a bonus catalog you do not already have, download and install.

    Make sure that works.

Check to see that it installed in the same directory as the files you just copied.

So here is what happened (EDIT) I tried another catalog I don't have it worked

Select 1 or more files in a file explorer window.

Right click and drag to a new destination and release the mouse button.

You will get a context menu where you can choose to Move or Copy.

I opened chief, select Manf Cat and the folder is still empty

So Eric I'm home now working on trying to migrate the library. You asked me to show you the manuf data. Did I look in the wrong place on my home desk top? Am I putting them in the wrong folder? I don't know how to figure this out?!?!?

  11. Shoot...……...I forgot I can't have X11 open on two machines at the same time, so I'll have to make a bunch of screen shots of X11 file locations on my work tablet, close that license then open the license on my home desk top so I can continue the fight (what seems to be a battle I'll never win)  to get my CA Libraries loaded on my home machine! And I wonder why the computer at the grocery store, check out, always seem to break down when I'm next in  line to pay?!?!?! \0/ \0/

I wanted to look at your Home PC as like others, I imagine the files are in the wrong spot.

Sorry, Eric I thought you meant my work tablet. I plan on taking it home this week end and doing a side by side and hopefully with fewer distractions, I can figure this out.  Thanks for not losing patience with me. I am really trying to get this down right!

Bob, I feel your pain!  It's not easy to sort out.

The file/folder locations on BOTH PCs MUST BE EXACTLY THE SAME.  It looks like you are pasting all of the folders into your C:Documents/CA etc folder NOT the C:PROGRAMDATA/CA folder.  They are two different folders.

If you have not changed where Chief is locating the folders.  This can be changed in X11 Preferences.  Perhaps you changed folder locations on your laptop???  Eric has a screen shot in post 8.  Open Preference on each computer and make sure all folder locations are the same.  Take a screen shot of each with your phone.

User library goes in the USER folder by default (C:Documents/...).

Manufacturer, Bonus, Reference Files and go inthe C:PROGRAMDATA/Chief Architect X11 folder by default.

Once you get everything matched up.  Go to Chief and Update Catalogs.

Tech support should be able to walk you through it.

One other suggestion.  Now that Chief allows us to relocate these files on the cloud (Preference settings), it's easier to set up and keep things synced up.  With Chief's standard way to set things up, your User Library won't sync between your two computers.  If you download a catalog, you'll have to add the same library catalogs to each computer.  It might be worth stepping back now and setting up the laptop to store on the cloud (I use OneDrive).  Then point the desktop to the same location and you're done.  No need for copy/paste and constant updates.  I think it's a better solution.  Try this:

    https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03090/moving-library-content-to-the-cloud-or-other-custom-location.html

Maureen, as you can tell my technical aptitude is short by a few electronic miles. Learning the software (since I really don't use it to make a living) has been a challenge, but FUN! Now that I'm having to use it more (made the mistake of letting my company know about it, now I'm doing their design build dwgs for the most part, and don't mind) but there are few hours in my day doe the extra work load..…..thus my need to set up my Desk top at home to work off some of the extra load I now have. The technical part of all this is mind-boggling for some one as technical inept as I am! Your suggestion is most helpful and if I can figure it all out will work on doing so. I plan on taking my Office tablet home this week end doing a side by side and check the files and locations and attempting to get them matched up!

    Thanks!

  14. Did anyone hear me SSSCCCCRRRRRREEEEEAAAAAMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!:o I have attempted once again to migrate my libraries from my office computer (copied all files to a 512 external hard drive). Got home, started up my Desk top, Did my search for the X11 data file path, opened that folder, Did my search for X11 data, found it C:\Users\Robert\Documents\Chief Architect Premier X11 Data\

Pasted all the files I backed up from my office machine in the data fold libraries.  The folders are there but no prompt asking me about 204458328_Corecatalogshere.thumb.png.2d92ac985864dcaeb8d1e8a8141adaf6.pngreplacing any files????? So I opened a new plan, opened my Library Browser, select the CA core catalogs all the applicable files are there.  Then I selected my User catalog, and all my user files are there; so I select the manufacturer catalog but there are no file or content that appears, and the same for bonus catalogs, nothing............can some one just do a simple video that shows me the steps?   I believe I've done it the way it says to in the help files but I'm not getting any results. All I've accomplished so far is fall further behind on this project.

    user library files are here.png

    Manufacturer Catalog is not here.dib

    Hi All,

I'm hoping to get some help with a similar issue. when I'm in my 3D view my ceiling is only showing the OSB and not showing any of the structure or drywall. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    Thanks,

Post the plan... It is hard to tell, if the layer (is) turned (on), it appears to have wrong wall height....

Brown Tiger beat me to it, but while you're at it you mind updating your signature with your soft-ware version and computer hardware info. Go up to your profile (upper right hand corner) click on account settings, then go to the drop down menu (lower left hand corner, select update signature or signature and update.

    Thanks
