  1. Of late, I'm doing more commercial buildings from scratch using PEMB structure for the frame. I've seen over the last year several post dealing with designs using pre engineered metal building structures. I did a quick look but didn't find those threads. I thought at one point one of our great CA user guru's had done a wall design using the metal building structure, does anyone remember that. I'm sure I saw some details showing the typical metal building framing, or did I? I'd like to create the wall type that looks as realistic as possible and I know I can probably do 3D molding poly lines, or poly line solids to create some of the detail for the sections I need but, if someone had already done it? Thanks!

  3. Larry, that did the trick. Presented to the Client, and he's happy, but; now he's decided he wants to increase the size, but that shouldn't be a problem now. I know I will have to start a new thread though once I've started as the city design board has told him he has to add brick veneer or other decorative finish to the exterior. I think I can figure that one out without a lot of forum help. As always a lot of great help on the forum, but I need to do as much on my own as possible! And remember to spell check
  4. Thank you! I missed that setting.
  5. Larry, I did. On first look it appears correct. I just need to get time to go back through the vid, so I can set my eave height correctly at 168" (14'). Yours is approx. 12'-10 1/8". I'm sure I can figure it out from here. I had used some information from a plan several years ago the Glenn Woodward helped me with, and thought I had to set the eave height in the structure tab with the room definition to keep the roof at the same height. Sounds like if I go to the roof tab, and set the eave for 14' that should raise the walls up without affecting the room ceiling height? I'll update once I've had more time to work on it. Have to run out and meet with a couple of clients.
  6. Larry, I took (second) quick look at the video. First I thought you were setting the over all height at 120" making the eave 120". The height they want for the trucks to clear the over head door height is 14' at the eaves, but they want a finished ceiling height of 120". I understand it better (as you would expect) after a second look. As soon as I can get back to it will actually give it a try. Thanks for the video!
  7. Thanks for the grammar correction. Wish the rest of it was that easy.
  8. Larry, the issue is created when I set the eave height, they want a 14' (168") eave height (only way I know to do that with CA X10 is to set it in the structure tab). Then when I attempt to set the lowered ceiling height to the 120" (10") that they desire in all the rooms (except the ware house apparatus bays) it either adds a stem wall and raises the floor elevation (and even with mono slab checked, and flat ceiling checked) there is no ceiling. I have attempted doing a ceiling plain as Glenn suggest, and set the pitch to zero, but the only way I can get the ceiling at all, is by editing the ceiling material layer to a depth of 48" which then gives me the lowered ceiling, but at the eaves the ceiling follows the roof pitch (I have no idea why?) which when I do a cross section shows the quirky sloped ceiling at the eaves and no way I want to show this to the client. Edit Room Default 1.pdf
  9. Glenn, you're always great help to me, however; this time it doesn't work, either in the Plan or layout file. Water mark is already unchecked, and when I open the plan or layout and go to view and click on the water mark it then shows across the plan or layout. I uncheck it again, the word sample is gone, however when I then attempt to print it as a PDF (or save it as a PDF) the work sample is plastered across it. I've attached the plan file if you want to give a look - mate? 40'X100' PEMB METAL BLDG (2).plan
  10. Not sure why, since I've never encountered it before now, but attempting to print the Layout file as a PDF to email to the client for his review, and using both available PDF options (even including saving as a PDF) I keep getting "sample" printed across the sheet. Since I have PDF on board, and using it in the past for other printing purposes, memo's, emails, etc., and never had "sample" scrawled across them? I'm not using a beta of X10, I have software support so why am I getting it? PRINT PDF SAMPLE.pdf
  11. Glenn, I was looking into using the ceiling shelf, not familiar with the tool or how it works. While searching the KB, (Since my ceilings in this one are suspended) KB 00291 addresses suspended ceilings, so I was checking into how to do this. Problem is, the KB speaks to editing the "normal" room definition, however, in X10 my edit tool display doesn't give me that option and with all the searching I've done, I'm still not sure how to accomplish the task outlined in this KB. https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00291/creating-a-suspended-ceiling.html#ceilingfinish Eric, I'm looking into how to use the Ceiling shelf tool (I saw that yesterday while searching for a way to correct the issue) The drop ceiling exercise I did yesterday worked so far except for the dropped ceiling following the roof slope when it hits the eaves for some unknown reason. I hate to delete what I've managed to accomplished so far to retry the ceiling plain, but if time permits today, I may just make a copy of my plan and try the ceiling plain tool again. Edit Room Default 1.pdf
  12. I'm out of practice for sure, not having used CA steady over the last several months. Currently one of our clients wants a metal building design with 14' eave height, but with 10' ceiling height in the finished areas. No ceiling in the warehouse portion. I did the basic building, set the height for 168". Attempting to set the ceiling height to 120" changes everything. so I used the structure tab, and edit ceiling finish, then change the layer to 48" to give me a 120" ceiling height. This probably isn't the best way to do it, but I can't get the build ceiling plain to work for me. IT keeps wanting to create a plain that follows the slope of the roof. I thought I had it figured out until I pulled a section through one of the spaces, and for some reason, the new ceiling height is still following the roof slope at the eaves. Some simple tool or setting I'm sure, but I haven't found it yet. 40'X100' PEMB METAL BLDG.plan
  13. Several times since I downloaded the latest (or at least thought I had) X9 update, every time I open a plan or start a new plan I get a message asking if I want to download available Chief Architect Core Catalogs to my library. So I finally bit the bullet and said yes. The down load started (supposedly) and after an hour I came back to the program to close it, and get the message the catalogs were still downloading. So I found something else to do for another 4 hours, and closing up shop I went to close CA and get the same message again that the core catalogues were still downloading. I left the Computer running all night, and this morning, same thing when I went to close the program and reopen, so apparently there is an issue. I closed it any way and then opened an older plan file, to which the same message came up again asking if I wanted to download available CH Core Catalogs. I haven't called Support yet, but was just curious if I am the only one having the issue? I don't ever remember it taking that long to download core catalogs.
  14. The one thing I noticed when selecting that roof plane, there is a check mark in the Flush Eave, and the default to overhang box is greyed out (although there is a visible check mark) but on the opposing eve (pan south) roof plane over the MB/BATH Flush eve is not checked and default to overhand is. The only way I could change it was to open the roof plane at the Kitchen, in-check boxed eve then turn it back on and select boxed eve with default to overhang. I thought it fixed it, but when I pulled a section the soffit still follows the roof slope :-( I guess since I'm not a CA guru, I'll have to default to one who is. I did try though!
  15. LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution” and applies more generally to the idea of improving wireless broadband speeds to meet increasing demand. 4G specifically stands 4th generation technology.
  16. Skip, give this a try: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00005/changing-the-color-or-material-of-a-single-wall.html https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00609/creating-an-accent-wall.html
  17. Post the plan please, and note the CA software version you are using please.
  18. David, I know your question makes sense to you, (for example interior rails are created with stem-walls?) I'm not sure why you would do it that way, but it would be so much easier, and probably faster if you just post the plan. IF it is too large for the forum, most files can be zipped and then posted. BTW, it would also help to know what version of CA software you are using.
  19. I am afraid your PDF's and question probably won't help anyone give you more than a "guess" but, if you would post the plan, and also let us know was CA software version you are using you should get a quick and good answer.
  20. You should study the Knowledge Base and available Videos to learn the basics. As far as I know there is no way to edit default settings specific to Base boards. My experience has been you draw a room, open its DBX (dialogue box) and select these types items, which then opens a file of the basic CA trim available. You can import (bonus) catalogues of various materials such as base boards / moldings etc. and select and add one or many that you choose. You can also use 3D molding polylines and create and save your own to the library file under user catalog. Read the knowledge base to see how to create new materials, customize existing library materials, importing items from available sites that have what you're looking for. A couple of examples are: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00767/creating-a-new-material.html https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01006/customizing-a-library-material.html; https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00786/creating-and-using-symbol-moldings.html Study and practice are your best friends!
  21. Steve, I don't think the "Grandview Plans" way of doing plans is TYPICAL for most of us. I've only had one client so far that wanted that kind of detail, and around most Code offices they just want the nutz and boltz in stead of the tensile and frills! My one client wanted to impress some bankers I think.....maybe developing plans to such a degree as the Grandview, would be nice to show investors in a sub-division, or in a high-class neighborhood controlled by HOA?
  22. Try toggling on connect CAD segments before you draw them.
