The plan I'm doing is an addition to our existing PD. I imported the original DWG file from the Architect. I attempted to do Cad to walls but that didn't work, so I'm drawing walls over the base plan that I imported. I have the wall angle issue (the original question) worked out by drawing a cad line over the interior wall line of the DWG plan and drawing new walls so the interior side lines up on the cad line, then opening each wall dbx setting the angles and lengths to match each similar wall. Now, I need to draw the existing roof overhanging the lobby. There are two support columns, and a gable roof over the aluminum storefront entry. I also need to covert the angles walls to look like aluminum store front and suppose I will have to drawing fixed windows for each, removing casings, sills and lintels inside and our for each? Changing the material to aluminum etc.? Any advise? MPD Plan.plan

Thanks Mick! Wish there was some way to fix it without redrawing the entire plan!

If you are doing a monoslab foundation, do you still need to actually create a foundation from the first floor etc. When I can get back to this one, I'll see if that affects it. Thanks all!

(Solved this one my self. Used a CAD line to outline the walls in the DWG file from the Arch. Then opened each CAD line DBX for angle and length, then the wall DBX for each wall, setting the length and angle per the info retrieved from the cad lines. Long way around but it worked!) Had to jump on another project for the same client I'm doing FS 2 for. I started modeling from imported DWG files and at the front of the existing building is a radiused glass wall. I started drawing it with straight (exterior walls) which is the way it is built in real life. It is actually a number of straight sections of Glazed Aluminum Storefront, which in order to model it I was going to use windows ceiling to floor converted to glass no casing, sills, lintels etc. I keep getting the error message that the walls are not connecting. I've selected each wall and used the join tool but they're not joining for some reason. I know its got to be a simple fix, but I haven't found it yet. MPD Plan.plan

Brief explanation this project is an addition to an existing metal building. The trouble area is the work and living space. The existing building is PEMB and the additions will be stick build. In order to draw it, where the new extension are to be built, the existing wall panels and internal structure will be removed. The new additions will be added plan east and west as you can see. The area that intersects the new additions was drawn with a room divider. I created a new wall type I named 10" PEMB wall. I put in wall breaks where the existing walls and additions intersect. When I first completed the floor plan, the condition at the eave intersection with the new addition did not exist. I had to revise the layout slightly to satisfy the Clients space needs. After that revision the conditions noted in the attached suddenly appeared as if the walls are no longer there? I attempted several different times moving walls in and out, but that didn't fill in the missing walls above the additions. I pulled the roof of the new additions back where they intersect with the existing taller building but that didn't allow the wall to fill in. I am definitely open for suggestions. Exact same problem exists on both sides of the building. FS 2 Zipped.zip

Well, Michael that fixed it! But here's the deal, from the first print to now I am POSSITIVE I did not change that print setting! BUT I'll take the blame. I still believe CA does it's own think now and then, for instance on another plan I closed one day everything was fine. The day before I had added some columns to a porch staring with one, I opened the DBX, set the bottom to floor height, the col length, and floor to top height saved and closed the file. The next day I opened the same saved file did a Perspective Full Overview and three of the columns and changed position one up off the porch, one sticking up through the roof, one bottom below grade. I opened each one and set them back to the original settings and they were fine, but I have no idea how they changed in the first place. Thanks for the help!

I know if sudden changes take place with a plan most of the time it is because the user (us) made them, or at least that sounds good! I have previously printed plans of the attached project for owner review and the line weights were great. Suddenly I opened the plan file I was working on (the very same plan file) I had saved a copy, and am now working on the copy, but when I opened the copy the line weights of the walls changed and even opened or sent to layout, they are not correct (too heavy) and I've opened and closed the file several times to see if that made a difference. So I went back to the original file that had the correct line weights, but now they've suddenly changed and look the same as on the copied plan! I opened tools and checked the line weights of the walls I zipped the file (too big to upload) if you want to take a look and see anything obvious. Thank you! FS 2 Zipped.zip

Steve, I did that yesterday before I gave up, that didn't work? I had to put it away and get back on another job today.
-
I give up today! I tried it again but to no avail!

Joe, I tried that about 5 hours ago. I just need to do the PLS for my self. I have a plan from about 4 years ago of a lake house I did (Glenn Woodward helped me figure out the roof on it). I did a screened porch on it and didn't have one minutes problem (CA 6 or 7) but for the life of me I can't duplicate the process on this. Go figure!

Our resident gurus, like for us to do as much by ourselves as we can...……...I completely appreciate it. I'm trying not to let my frustrations prevent me from figuring it out. YOU are the best at sticking with us dummies! I actually had to model some pre engineered metal building parts for a job a few weeks back and they turned out pretty good. We'll see how this goes.

Looks good if I can figure out how to do the same thing. I've used P solids to make beams and other embellishments, so maybe I can figure this out too?

Steve, maybe easy peasy for you but I'm dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to converting symbols then trying to place it in my plan. ! I tried your instructions several different ways but after selecting tools/Symbol/Convert to Symbol the DBX opens, but I cannot rotate the symbol as in your instructions. I tried opening the panels DBX and rotating it on X axis it went screwey. I saved it and then attempt to place it in my plan and all it does is show up flat in the floor plan. I've had it for the day! Maybe tomorrow I'll work on converting my own PLS and see how that works out. At this point I can build her a sample to look at on her patio

Great work Steve, but it won't work for me! Don't know why. I even tried copying your screen wall and pasting it in. Looked really good, but in order to make it fit the floor plan, I had to take out the room divider walls that define the porch and patio. When I do that I lose my room definition and every thing that goes with it i.e. floor, ceiling etc. Placing a slab didn't work but I didn't take much time with it. I've been screwing with this all day. The other problem is getting it to follow the pitch of the shed roof. I think I'll put it up for the day and see what tomorrow may bring? (EDIT) I just saw your reply with the symbol. I'll take a look before I shut everything down for today.

Eric, I plan on framing in between the 6"X6" columns with 2X4 spaced 24" on center (to use 48" wide wire). I will put in a horizontal 2"X4" block about 36" from the patio surface between each stud. If she decides later to do siding on the lower portion the blocking will be there already. She wants at least one screen door in the wall opposite the door out of the angled wall (kitchen wall). I've attempted Joe's direction but if I don't build room divider walls to encompass the porch and patio I get no room definition and lose my slab. If I attempt the rail leaving the room divider in place then the rail walls will not connect past the divider walls. I've attempted it with 4" siding wall invisible and not invisible but of course the column don't show and it is more difficult to insert windows (converted to screen panels). I thought I may try PL solid and see if I can make that work? I can't get the walls on the end to follow the rake of the roof.

(issue is SOLVED!) I followed previous threads to model the screened in patio for my Grand daughter. The patio, columns and Roof are already existing. She wanted me to model what it would look like screened in before I actually finish it. My challenge (I have searched the forum and did find screened porch, cotton screen porch, and even one that I had responded to) but none address my particular challenge. I need to be able to build my walls between the existing columns since they will be an integral part of the screened patio and show it as it actually will look. I've tried several different approaches using room divider, railing, knee wall, and defined 4" siding wall made invisible, then tried visible but placing window openings set to screen etc., (I have not tried poly line solid yet) but even thought of (haven't tried it yet) just doing a framed wall defined 4" siding, then in the wall DBX remove all the routine materials and just leave framing....will that work?) The soft ware won't let me build walls between the columns either or at least so far I haven't been able too? Almost forgot, the screen wire frame at the top needs to follow the slope of the roof. Lane, I saw a few strange things going on. 1) when I opened the plan at first you had the family room set to open below so there was no floor. I unchecked that but there is a hole in the floor under the dormer so that is probably where you were trying to make a hole in the roof for the dormer??? 2) Also when I was scanning the room to see the roof for the dormer condition, I noticed you have siding showing on the gable ends of the second floor in the family room. I'm not sure how to fix that, except going to the second floor, selecting the end walls and change the material to drywall? Check it out. I tried to, but changing it to drywall changes the entire end wall of the second floor. 3) On the exterior several different materials may be on purpose? I'm certainly not a lot of help but looks like Robert fixed your current situation, and he will probably tell us how to fix that too.

:-( wow, missed that!

Eric, I had already tried that to see if it would work but didn't for me?

Model 4 differnt wall types in same elevation
Evolution replied to Evolution's topic in General Q & A

Client wants me to model a 3Bed 2Bath house and has given me the attached elevation they would like me model. There are 4 basic wall types I'd like to model as accurately as possible so that their builder can compare his take off to the CA material list. I assume I can model the attic walls by simply selecting them, and set the exterior finish to either vertical siding or board and batten? The wall under it is horizontal siding will brick (they want stone) below. Do I do a knee wall for this? If I do material regions (which to me doesn't make sense) it won't show up in the material list, then I'd have to add it manually? The exterior feature wall will be either brick or stone. So, do I have to insert wall breaks in each location where the wall exterior finish type changes? The remaining exterior walls will be horizontal siding (Ship lap or beveled not sure yet) she's trying to decide.

Cleaning the poly - solids up to look like PEMB structure. Now to figure the best way to model the "z" perlin and place them on the PEMB beams, and the "C" gurts and place them on the vertical PEMB columns. CPS - 100'X200'.plan

Thanks, GLenn, as always your the champ!

So here is what I have so far. I've still got to figure out a better wall definition. Make and add Girts and Perlin. Lot of work!!! Also, Im not sure what is going on with the plan file. I did close the file and saved it before attaching it, but when I open it, all that is visible is the floor plan. Not sure what is going on, but when I try to do a full over view, nothing shows up unless I start zooming in, then it takes quite a bit of zooming for anything to show up. Still not sure what is going on. When I open the plan I have to scroll way in before the floor plan even shows. Full prospective over - view camera is not working at all, so in order to see the elevation I have to do a full elevation camera.??? CPS - 100'X200'.plan CPS - 100'X200'.plan

On the previous PEMB jobs I've done, I did create a wall type to mimic the PEMB but in 2D plan of course, it doesn't even look similar, and in setting up the layers of this wall type there aren't any materials to replicate the typical PEMB wall i.e., interior metal wall liner, 10" red iron column at column bays, "Z's" or Perlin. I can use corrugated metal for the interior liner and exterior wall metal in place of drywall, or OSB and forget the rest for 2D, I guess? I'm working on using poly lines for the Space frame to replicate that in section. I just haven't completed it nor figured out how to place them in the 2D plan once they're finished. I guess make a cad detail and place them that way? But it seems like there was a thread out there somewhere with an entire discussion on the topic??? Thanks!
