Floors and Room dividing -- Sunken area not working properly
Doug_N replied to ramseyatelier's topic in General Q & A
Sorry, Stacey, I can't see the link. Can you just post the filename.plan. Just that file. I should not be too big to post. -
The alternate designs would probably be for visualization for the client to choose an option. Before executing a framing command the alternate designs should be deleted. First though save the design file as some other name just in case. Just thinking out loud.

Floors and Room dividing -- Sunken area not working properly

Could you post the plan file? I am sure that one of us can solve this. -
Here is a solution. You can have multiple roof planes, and have some on a different layer. You can make some of them invisible. This isn't the case of two roof styles but rather a way of turning off the new roof plane to expose the new roof rafters. It is entirely possible to have more than one roof plane over the same roof area by manually drawing the planes.

Here is your building with a shed roof. I missed the note about the half wall after I deleted it. You can extend the roof plane to intersect that wall if you like. Eric pointed out the video about baselines, and that is how I adjusted the elevation of the roof by locking the pitch and editing the baseline to match the baseline of other another nearby hip roof. If you lock the baseline you can change the pitch and pivot the roof about the top of the exterior first-floor wall. Buid5_ShedRf.plan

OK, so you can't set the wall to invisible because CA will also make the imbedded doors and windows invisible. So I created a wall type that uses very thick glass to setup a framework for the doors and windows to be placed. Then by setting individual logs from the library, I can fill in the spaces around the doors and windows. Here is a picture of the result of that effort on a test model.

LOL Other than drawing this building the rest is easy. Here is what I have cooked up along with Cameron at CA tech support. In the library, there are actually some logs. I can't really use the log walls, because you can't do openings in them. But you can make exterior walls, turn them invisible, install windows and doors, and then stack individual logs up around all of the openings. Using the array feature it should go pretty quickly, sort of. I am certainly open to any other suggestions.

Has anyone done a log cabin? I have a client that I am designing a deck and would like to do a rendering of the proposal. Here is a photo of the client's house. I have to somehow recreate a model in CA. Has this already been done? I can't seem to find anything close in the catalogues.

As far as feeling stupid goes, I think all of us have worn that hat from time to time.

I use onedrive that is included with a MS Office subscription. I then use SyncToy (free from MS) to keep backup copies locally. This way I can access my work files when visiting a client and can also share a particular file or directory with someone that I collaborating with. Works great for me.

John, Thanks for posting that great video. Very well done.

I have noticed something strange. Well strange to me, maybe it makes sense but I can't see why. I want to make a cathedral ceiling, The eave facia is deeper than the gable fascia and when I look at an overall view this is what I see. Is there an easy fix for this? The attached file is just an experimental file that I was using to learn how to control roof and soffit features. Also to get roof framing to behave without excessive thinning. Test ceiling file.plan

Thank you gentlemen. Both of the observations and suggestions were very helpful and have solved the problem.

Yes I did that before posting this. But here is a regen of the framing for the ceiling and the roof Ceiling through roof plane.mp4 Ed Markoulakis-PLC_DELL_LT aug 20.plan

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? The roof plane cuts through the ceiling plane so that near the exterior wall the ceiling is the bottoms of the roof rafters.

Gosh Rod thanks for the perspective. I would never have designed a house like this but it is an as built that needs modifications. It seems that as built are way tougher to do than new designs. I have been using CA for about a year and a half now. Always learning more. Thanks once again.

Rod, Here is the new plan file. I have made some adjustments, but that darned wall is still visible, or at least one part of it is. The default elevations have been set for the rear of the house. Doug Test building to get second story crawl space.plan

Rod. OK will do. I will let you know the results. Doug

Hi Rod. Thanks for your comments. Hopefully, the following comments may help explain where I am with this design. I gave up on trying to use a default room setting for structure because this house has different floor levels at the rear of the house versus the front. They are different by 12" This is true for both the first and second floor. In addition, the floor for the room in the garage has a different floor. What I am trying to accomplish is to make the wall dividing the balcony space from the floor over the room in the garage invisible. Because the floor for the room in the garage is a second floor, the floor over the crawl space is a third floor. That floor has to match up with the balcony floor, which is a second floor. Maybe I am wrong, but the default settings are useful only if it works for most of the house. No default setting would seem to work for this design. Similarly ceiling levels are also different in several locations. The same is true for the roof planes.
