  1. I have to say even with the issues I use watercolour all the time to show clients design.. to me much better than trying to create a photorealistic rendering that always looks fake unless you take a ton of time.. watercolour takes secs..

  2. In my area and I know in many locales in the states where plated roof trusses are used it is common to set heel heights( dimension of truss thickness at face of wall, top of wall to top of truss) ie 12”

I have seen the usage of msr lumber and spf lumber for trusses across USA and Canada and there is a ton of it used.

So my question is why does CA continue to just assume roofs are stick framed and don’t give an option for a heel height? And why don’t they show spf lumber as an option when this is a very prominent lumber being used in the US and Canada ?

    Come in CA smartin up!

You know the watercolor rendering type is one of the coolest in Chief - something i've used to change my process from drawing concepts by hand - BUT, in Chief its the most buggy style by far.  I was looking at other bug submittals i made with this render type nearly a year ago thats still an issue today - specifically, windows sometimes don't show opaque even though the setting is checked.

Chief - please fix this render style so it works properly!!!!

I ran into windows not showing opaque and how I fixed it was change the glass to another glass and then change it back and it seemed to work this way every time... it is very annoying and takes time.

  4. Hi All, i did some work on a plan and now i cant find the work i did on it.

I have looked at auto archives, not there, searched my drive for other plans, looked in other

locations and still cant find changes.

I have autosave set for every 5 mins.

Is there anything else i can do?

  5. Thanks for all your answers guys...i did get it to work by making wall go thru and then adding a pass through.

Yes a real PIA not being able to select opening without case or frame being on...whats with that?

This seems like a problem CA needs to address,..this box window issue...why so complicated and why hasn't this already been done????

    Come on CA...

  6. I am having a great deal of trouble just making a window box, i raised floor but then wall below is open?

I tried using the window box tool but it would not let me put on corner boards? This shouldnt be this hard, Help!!!

Also my railing wall on balcony is two different colours? Whats going on? I tried deleting and putting new one and it still does not fix.

I am not sure if my plan is corrupt but when i change a wall now it doesnt change it in 3d views?

  7. i just did a folding sliding door for a design, i used an overhead door, i built individual

doors and made them a library item and inserted them in, i then used cad to draw them in

plan.  I had to draw a polygon over the overhead door dashed line to hide it,

A lot of work to get this result.

  8. HI everyone, i tried looking through forum to get this answer and i couldn't find an answer.

Is there a simple way to show a knee wall with cap for stair railing.  it is a very common

way to do a stair railing cost effectively.

I am hoping that in x9 they have this figured out? I took a look at videos and they did not help.

I want a wall that follows stair with a cap on it.  i know i could do polyline solids but that is dumb.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers.

    Quick clarification:
They CAN open the file no matter what as long as they have the same build.(19).

But, they will see this warning:

    warning.thumb.png.b1493dee733dbd831e738438c0629d2c.png

So, you could send them the file. They can make notes with the text tools and measure things with the tape measure, then save it and send it back. But that's all.

If you unlock it using the plan default option to allow editing, then they can make structural and design changes using their feature set.

Another thing to think about too is that they can also just rent Chief X9 and make changes then cancel their rental. But, it's probably not likely to happen. Probably. ;)

Hi Kirk, thanks for reply, what if I lock certain layers, can someone with another same build open these? What if I turn off material list for layers, can this be turned on?

    David

  10. I turned off both the material list and can lock any layers i choose to.

This way customer can not do a material list and can only change unlocked layers.

I tried this on home designer pro 2018 and it worked.

Anybody know if someone had a premier version if they could rename file or unlock layers?

Here is the file, let me know if anyone can change name and resave or if you can open file and change items.

I think considering the "BIM" nature of where this industry is headed, its going to become more common place.  I've developed a quick agreement I have clients sign before I give them a file.  I sign these all the time from my civil guys when I ask for files, so I think its becoming part of the process.

I've also handed files to builders as well, who are looking to mess with interior/exterior colors and staging furniture with an interior designer.  They've all so far respected my contract so i've not had issues.  Sometimes I lock certain layers.

Initially I had trepidation with this idea of letting my files go, but my practical experience tells me I was worried more than I actually should have been.  I guess it largely depends on your client as well.

Interesting, is this contract you would be willing to share?

johnny then do you charge extra for the file?

  12. Yes there is a switch to allow pro users to allow them to modify.

i was more concerned that the customer now could do more with the design like budget takeoffs and such, if they want file they should pay extra for it.

one customer is telling me how great there 2020 designer can do things, but I don't think 2020 can export material lists or attach area labels to things like counters, back splashes etc.

the customer seems quite impressed with 2020's ray trace 360's.

as everyone knows we can produce 360's very fast not in ray trace views that look great.

i wonder how long it takes 2020 to produce a ray trace 360... as long as CA?

i hardly ever do ray traces anymore, instead I do 360 renders and lots of water colour views.
