Stainless Steel Looks Black...

Recommended Posts

Why do all my stainless steel textures look black when I ray trace? I've tried lighting like crazy, and everything else is really bright, but SS still looks pitch black. Any ideas?

I would suggest that you search the forum on this subject.  It has been kicked around a lot and there are some threads with some good information in them.  You either are using a bad texture and/or you aren't using correct settings.  I too have struggled with SS in ray traces and it is a tricky thing to get right.  You'll get some good info from those prior threads and with a little help from others, you'll get some good information in this thread as well.  I am heading off to bed now or I would direct you to one or more of the better threads.  You should find one or more SS textures to try if you find the right thread(s).  Good luck.

So much for it being a simple fix :-).

Thanks for the help, I'll take a look.

So there's nothing on this forum about Ray Tracing, according to the search box.

I gather, however, that the forum software changed recently, and that I'm probably only looking at posts from at most a few months back.

How do you search the "old" forums (or is this necessary?).

It is black until you turn on Use Photon Mapping in the Ray Trace Options.

Rendering stainless steel has ALWAYS been a problem.  Even with 3rd party rendering software it's a problem...

There are solutions you can do post pro, or just change the texture of the object to look "stainless"...

As soon as you find a good fix, let us all know :)

Here's a link from doing a search on stainless steel (SS) on the legacy ChiefTalk forum:

http://www.chieftalk.com/search.php?searchid=206209

There's a bunch of threads shown and not everything is specifically targeting SS but lots of good info to wade through.  You should probably stick with information that pertains to X5 or X6 as it "may be" more appropriate for Chief's current ray trace engine.  Nevertheless, other good info is good on all sorts of subjects related to ray tracing.

Actually the answer above about Photon Mapping was the short answer to my question. Yes, making it look good is another story. I've managed to play with my lighting enough to make it look decent though.

Here's a texture I posted in 2006,  V10, POVRay era.

Hi All, I am trying to achieve a ray trace with a tree in the foreground that sort of frames the picture. Attached is an example of my goal- I did not create the attached jpg. I am getting close by placing a tree close to the camera but mostly out of view, but every tree I have tried is blurry. See the saved camera in the attached file. Then I place another big tree closer to the house to create a shadow on the house/driveway. I will crop that tree out of the final picture. Are there any trees CA has that you recommend for close-up high resolution (5500x3200 pixels) ray trace? I found a thread from the old Chief Talk where they had a similar problem and Larry Kumpost  suggested a high res tree, but I don't know where to find one. Here is the old thread http://www.chieftalk.com/showthread.php?34289-Exterior-Critique&highlight=trees+foreground. Thank you in advance!

Can anybody tell me why I get ray traces that are really grainy?  I can't find a topic on this.  I am using X9 on a mac.

When doing a Ray Trace the cabinets seem to be lit from the inside.
There were no lights added to these cabinets and it seems to be happening every time.

How do I get rid of halos/glare that is appearing at crown molding, around door ways, cabinets, etc. in ray trace view? Do I need to change the default for interior ambient light?
