DHerb2014
I'm working on a project for an associate, who didn't check the box "Save In Plan" after importing many documents. The Layout is missing three sheets of files. What is your recommendation on searching and re-linking PDF's in Layout? Attaching a cryptic Layout Box Specification menu that I cannot figure out. It shouldn't be this difficult to re-link files in Layout. Unfortunately, there are no videos from Chief to explain this. DBCooper
Couple of thoughts... It is better to post pictures directly instead of as a pdf so people don't have to download it and then open it. "Save in plan" won't help with missing links to Chief's plan files. This only works if you have any imported pictures or pdf documents that are missing. My guess is that your associate either didn't send you all of the files needed or sent you the wrong versions of them. They should have probably used "backup entire plan" instead of just attaching files. As far as Chief making this simpler, isn't that what the new "project management" system in X17 is supposed to do? It is my understanding that they built this system for people that don't have a good understanding of file management so that problems like this are not supposed to happen. Not sure if you have looked at X17 yet but you can choose to use the new system or keep doing things the old way. Since the old way may not always work the way you want, you might consider trying the new way. I don't know if Chief has any videos but they do have a tech article that might help: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00022/message-could-not-successfully-open-all-of-this-layout-s-associated-files.html They even have a whole series on file management that might help: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/category/5/file-management.html You could also just click on the "help" button from the "linked view" dialog page and that might have some useful information. DHerb2014
DB, Thanks for your thoughts, as always, very helpful. What I didn't mention is the fact that we've been using Dropbox for every project for the past few years with just a few hiccups. I access my colleagues' files with his password and credentials. I work on the project in various folders (Title 24, Structural, Plan Check Corrections, etc.) and it's been working exceptionally well. What we're perplexed with is that his file(s) have everything attached on his computer (PDF's, JPEG's, etc.), as he has created the project initially and uploaded into Dropbox. When he opens up the project in Dropbox, it's all together. In this case, I opened up the Layout in Dropbox, and it was missing some of his attachments. When I try to re-link the image, it's much more confusing, as I've been using Chief since 1998, and it was very simple to re-attach files into the Layout. You'd highlight the missing box, right click, and a dialog box would open showing where the former link was located. You'd select the new location, and the image would populate in layout. Now, there's a cryptic layer of drawings and various layers that make no sense at all. Why would I need options to find the file in "Sections, Site Plan, Title 24, Plan Views, New Plan Standards, etc.? See the previous PDF image for reference. I'm watching the various webinar's for X17, and there's a lot of fluff that I'll never use (3-D text, tile manipulation, 3-D plumbing, etc.). The project management option looks interesting and might have some nice features. In my case, I must design construction documents quickly and get them approved for my clients. I don't care if a water glass on a table has a more realistic appearance than before. Clients don't care either. Time is money. Take good care... Renerabbitt
1 hour ago, DHerb2014 said: The project management option Project management in X17 will solve a lot of your issues I don't usually promote my YT membership here but I have a whole playlist on cloud that would very much help you understand more about the cloud and how it works. You absolutely do not need to be logging into someone else's dropbox to be sharing project files. Dropbox is built for collaboration and has awesome sharing tools so you can be logged into your own account and by syncing to the cloud and accessing the same files.. That being said, having files that are syncing through a server/client like dropbox means that the files live on his machine and are being synced to the cloud, but that does not mean that files that he has in layout on his machine will be synced with it to the cloud. Those files could be anywhere on his machine, and chief is simply accessing those files on his machine wherever they live. If they are not set in the dialog box to "Save in Plan" then they are just being accessed on his machine. Chief will always look for assets present in plan or layout within the data folder or within the local directory of where the layout or plan file exists. So if when he attaches these files, they are in the same folder as the plan file, then they would not be missing links if he was syncing that folder with you.
