Saltbox roof on 1 1/2 story

Trying to build this roof. I can't seem to figure out how to get the gulf wing and the ridge not in the center. My ridge stays centered. And I can't get rid of the second story because I manually drew the roof to get the cutout on the back.

Here. Now I just need the little dip.

 

I added a second floor and ignored it.

I auto generated the roof with the two sides full gable.

Broke the front wall where the front gable ends. Made that a gable. That made the front gable.

Took the back roof the one at the height I wanted and extended it to cover all the back. (this prompted that auto roof would be turned off.)

I broke it and cut out the cut out.

Lined up all the overhangs to 18"

Joined the two roofs by right clicking one and "join roofs"

Clicked the back roof plane and Transform/Replicate

Put 9' in the z delta box and clicked ok. That raised the back wall

Rejoined roofs.

If you are going for an accurate as-built Chief model, you will need to field measure to determine the roof pitches and roof plane elevations.  Fascia heights, ridge heights, etc.

 

Have you done this?

 

Such field measurements will result in getting the roof intersect line, of the front gull-wing two-pitch roof,  located as-built.

You've still got some issues Ringos. 

>The top ridge of the roof goes straight across

and yours has a hump on one end. 

>The right side of your roof plane has the "dip"

in it but it should all be the same pitch.

>To raise the gable height you have to either

increase the pitch or raise the Ridge Top Height.

Planes more clearly. I also tweaked the Dormer

to make it look more like the photos.

Rich,

 

Understood. I have spend a several hours and back and forth.  I posted to get some help.

 

I can't figure out how to get both the front gable and gull wing and all of it to show up together.

Once I get the gull wing I cannot figure out the gable and vice versa.

As you can see I cannot seem to get the gable tall enough for the second floor.

 

I am back to this with each of those roofs the right measurements. It is a 38x32 and the roofs without the overhangs are 16 on back, 10', and 11.

The front roof is 3/12

You know how to use the join-roof tool, right?

 

And you have watched this?  https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/watch/6127/gull-wing-roof.html?playlist=95

 

And your field measurements tell you exactly where, front to back, that roof intersect line is, the intersection of low pitch and higher pitch?  Dimension this in plan view when you have joined the planes, and compare it to the field measurement.

 

The high ridge location is right where you measured it?

Using text, annotate your plan to show your field measurements, then close the plan and post it here.  Someone will properly model the roof arrangements in ten minutes.

I drew a 32 x 38 box house and threw three roof planes on it to approximate your basic configuration.  See the dimensions on the plan view, showing the roof intersect points?  You need to get yours to align with what you measured in the field.

 

And this, which I learned from a Chiefer that used to post with a lot of excellent solutions to those with problems.  When working in 3D, use vector view, turn off color, and toggle patterns OFF.  You get a much more clear view of the roof planes.

Four minutes for the large dormer, but it's not right with the roof intersects on its right side.  This is all just to approximate the shape of the mass.  Your field measurements will be used to tune it to a true as-built.

Thank you Gene. I will keep trying. I also have a interior wall 20' 6" from the back wall that must be interfering with the roof.

 

I am to here at this point, missing something that is not letting the siding go up to the roof.

This roof has some issues and the as it was built it is not perfect, but here are the steps I used:

 

To create a saltbox roof

  1. In a blank plan, navigate to Build> Wall> Straight Exterior Wall wall.png?1726685303, then click and drag out 4 walls to create a basic 30' x 40' structure.

  2. Use the Select Objects Select-Objects.png?1726685303 tool to click on the left 30' wall and select the Open Object open.png?1726685303 edit tool.

     
  3. On the Roof panel of the Wall Specification dialog that opens, select the Full Gable Wall option under the Roof Options section, then click OK.
     
    Note: You can also use the Change to Gable Wall(s) edit tool to convert hip walls to gable walls without having to open the Wall Specification dialog.

    In the left wall's Wall Specification set the Roof Option to Full Gable Wall

     
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make the opposite wall a Full Gable Wall as well.

     
  5. Select Build> Floor> Build New Floor addfloor.png?1726685303, and in the New Floor dialog that opens, choose to Derive new 2nd floor plan from the 1st floor plan, then click OK.

    Build a new floor and choose to derive the 1st floor floor plan.

     
  6. On the newly created 2nd floor, Move move2.png?1726685303 the top horizontal 40' wall inwards so that its distance from the bottom horizontal wall changes from 30' to 20'

  7. With this wall still selected, click the Open Object open.png?1726685303 edit tool.

     
  8. On the Roof panel of the Wall Specification dialog that opens, select the Knee Wall option under the Roof Options section, then click OK.
     

    A knee wall's height is defined by the roof above, not the ceiling height.
     


    In the Wall Specification set the Roof Option to Knee Wall.

     
  9. If Auto Rebuild Roofs is not enabled, navigate to Build> Roof> Build Roof  autoroof.png?1726685303 from the menu, check the Build Roof Planes box, then click OK to see the changes reflect in your plan.
 
Next, create the front gable. The more correct looking gable might be built using the Gable/Roof Line tool  to automatically generate a gable above the bearing wall of a hip roof plane.
 
However this particular roof goes right the edge and so I used manual roof planes for the front gable.
 
 
Finally, I place a dormer and modified it to the correct size:
