Cabinet Right Side, Can't add Shelves?

Greetings all, I'm trying to create a built-in full-height cabinet next to a bed and I want there to be an opening niche on the right side of the cabinet face with shelves. For some reason the dialog box won't allow me to add or change shelves, it's grayed-out. Any suggestions? I know I can manually add shelves but it would be handy to just use the normal cab shelf tool. 

Here's what I'm seeing when I'm in that cabinet dialog box.

 Split the front vertically. Add the shelves to the side with the opening. First set number of shelves, then distance between. Last set the bottom shelf distance from previous to match the bottom right side distance.

If you want one cabinet, you can't specify shelves on the right side, but you can modify the ones for the whole cabinet on the front side so that they will look right through the opening on the side.
