I think this is a  a new feature in X10.

When you load a plant onto a Garden Bed, Chief populates the Garden Bed with the plant at 12" centres - you can then edit all the variables.

If you want a single plant, place it outside the Garden Bed and then drag onto the bed.

...or hold down the alt key to override the library replace mode.
