  1. in all seriousness though, I've used the CAD portion to model and work through several projects I've made. Seeing a project beforehand in valuable to sidestep and rethink some potential design issues mid build. Most recent design was a router plane I built.
  2. Saw a similar post by some nut on facebook... same looking map there too (probably ripped you off somehow). Why would anyone use design software for designing something other than designing what the software designers designed it to design? this is beyond me
  3. Those panels by intent are meant to be used in a variety of ways so the best way to show them is to have the model. you them also get more realistic lighting response from the model. There is a framework that they use for these in some applications but I have not been able to get my eyes on the specifications for that yet so I omitted it altogether in this case. If i can get the right design parameters I will incorporate it in the future. As far as the suggestions. !'ve read and experimented a bit with the tips but haven't made progress with them yet. Marque selecting definitely works and I am definitely bewildered it does compared to other selection methods... doesn't make sense yet so I hope someone more knowledgeable can shed light on that.
  4. to touch on this a bit more and to show how the finished fretwork acts, here are some renders using it in one of its applications. having it a solid object has alot of benefits...
  5. Yes, I used the splined but converted to polylines after creation to allow regular cad lines to connect. The blob of terror is a polyline with subtracted holes but i do think it has to do with the number of segments as you say. How many that is I cannot tell but enough to be a major headache. Of note. when i created the fretwork screen. I used arcs and lines in that instead of the splines because everything was uniform. I was still some minor slow downs but nothing as uncomfortable as this latest round. I wasnt familiar with this DBX before but I will keep it in mind for the future when similar needs arise. I did submit this to tech support already, when they reply I will have them send it your way. I didnt know that marque selecting made a difference but it certainly does... Any insight as to why Ben? Working on seperating the overlapped parts now. Hopefully I can get through this one without having to restart. Any predictions if the problems i am having now will carry through once the polyline is extruded to a polyline solid? Thanks again for all of the help
  6. Thanks for your suggestion. I have all of those installed already, but most (not all) of the stone textures outside of Eldorado stone are IMHO very tiled, washed out, and artificial looking. More so, My company primarily sells Provia Heritage Stone as their price point and selection of style and color are excellent compared to others we can use. Having a clean and efficient way to create these inherently difficult textures I would most use is indispensable.
  7. Interesting approach to handle it... I never considered this but i'm sure alot less impactful overall, Thanks. I'll have to do this. I wanted to make sure there wasnt something simple I was overlooking. In this case, splines are the easiest CAD tool for modeling the shapes I know of but it seems there should be a easy way to lessen the tool they take on a system after a general line is established. when converting a curve to a polyline you have the option to choose the number of sides. Seems that any poly-object should be able to be selected after creation and adjusted for resolution. Well see what Tech support comes up with and maybe this will turn into a suggestion.
  8. Thanks for trying, at least it wasn't just mine... I can see our computer stats are similar so maybe someone with a heftier computer than us can give it a go. Didnt imagine that a non solid box with holes would be such a gauntlet.
  9. windows have to be inserted into walls, these do not. you show me that you can make muttons accurate to the fretwork, celtic, sprig, or morse pattern... I dont know how you could begin that process.
  10. Here is the file i am working with Duralife Screen Panels - Sprig.plan
  11. https://duralifedecking.com/composite-decking/accessories/panels/ scroll about midway down and you will see the panel designs. I already created the fretwork, boardwalk, and celtic designs but the sprig is being a pain. I tried this but it is still slower than my prized race snail...
  12. Hey, In short, is there a way to reduce the impact that a polyline is having on my system. Let me splain. I am needing to model the duralife screen panel "sprig"... easy enough. small panel aproximately 2'x4' but I am about half way through now and clicking on the main polyline with holes is bringing Chief to a crawl. I started the process by using splines to trace the shapes then converting them to polylines but i suspect this method has the effect of creating too many lines when fewer is sufficient for my purposes. Is there a way to adjust "resolution" to something that is manageable without starting from zero? If not is there a better way to create this that wont freeze chief in time? Note, other programs open and operate fine while Chief is in this state.
  13. Do you have tips or tricks you've gained from your experience?
  14. I am familiar with this one and even have it on my machine but haven't messed with it a lot. I didn't have great success with the PixPlant map generator the first time around but it was ok, It did get better on my second attempt at a stone texture and shingle texture. it seems to help to build the maps one by one vs all at once like i did the first time around...
  15. Saw a topic earlier today and found a pretty cool tool as a result so I thought I would share... I was searching for a seamless picture generator to make the process easier when the need arises to use a picture for a texture. I have made some seamless textures before but the process is overall pretty time consuming, especially if you don't have gimp or photoshop. Here is the base image I downloaded from Provia's Website this morning. First I came across this website: https://www.imgonline.com.ua/eng/make-seamless-texture.php You upload an image, make some selections, and it spits out a seamless image. I didnt spend alot of time playing with it but The best result i got was setting the method to NO 3, Pre-Cropped to 2 pixels each side, Pre-Averaging Intensity 25, and I used the PNG-24 output option. Here is the tiled image it generated (2x2) Not too bad for about 2 min work. If you have tried to make stone seamless you would know how inherently difficult it is. Best option I found was a download called PixPlant. It can operate as a standalone program or can be used within photoshop (it says). It has a pretty easy to use interface and can generate options quickly. Once you have one you like, you can get into a little finer editing using some familiar tools (paint, clone, blur, flatten, and sharpen) It did take a bit longer, but the use and display of the texture tiles while editing made it pretty simple and the added bonus of being able to generate some maps was cool. This function can use a bit of work but it is something... Here is a side by side comparison of the two stone walls generated today... imgonline on left and PixPlant on the right. 17. Thanks for sharing. I had to update some symbol options to make them work after importing: 2Gang surface Switch - Did not originally rotate to the face of the wall i was placing it in. In the Symbol Specification menu under options the check wall mounted, switch, and 110 volts boxes Single Switch Surface Mt - Big offset from wall surface. Set the Y Position Origin Offset to 45" and the object shows correctly but not sure how to get the symbol to follow. Surface Duplex - No Issues Surface Duplex 17.5 - No Issues Surface Quad - No Issues
  18. I bumped up a post by Rene Rabbit from a few versions ago for enhancements for PBR and it did have some background rotational items on the list. I might add my own specifically focusing on the background orientation. Seems like it would be a simple thing to incorporate.
  19. yesterday i was following several threads on the topic kinda getting up to speed where everyone else has been. several talked about billboards but i thought they were just talking about the poly solid in front of a window trick ive seen before. Solver walked me through importing a billboard and now i know the difference. i didnt know if there was a way to combine the billboard feature with a cylinder around the plan trick or even a sphere around the plan trick but it seems there is not... It did just occur to me as I was typing this, could you set the material to a translucent to let some light through? My suspicion is that it would wash out the picture. has anyone tried this yet?
  20. backgrounds dont block out the sun, chief knows how to handle the background in relation to it, but a cylinder solid object is different. I learned about using billboards yesterday which is the image unaffected by the sun so that is an option in some cases but still not a perfect system.
  21. Got it, Thanks solver. Do you know if this method can be applied to a cylinder or a sphere?
  22. i have tried the "polyline solid in front of the window" trick and had the sunlight blocked. I do not know any other methods to accomplish this myself but from the picture it seems there is a workaround. I just dont know where to start in accomplishing it. Can that method also be applied to the "giant cylinder around the plan" trick so that the sun shines through it on a larger scale? Is there a "giant sphere around the plan trick" for a spherical image? I haven't heard anyone mention that one yet?
  23. That was a lot of content to get through with many rabbit holes to jump into... I can see that the topic of background orientation is not a new one, but there also do not seem to be any great work around options currently either. I will reiterate that one should not have to rotate an entire plan to accommodate a background image, spherical or 360. It would seem to be a simple ask to unlock the orientation of any given backdrop and rotate it vs everything, hopefully this can be addressed in a future update. Until then I'll try editing the background slice to be where i need it and see if that works for a spherical image.
