  1. Be aware that when you use the "Rotate Plan" tool, you actually rotate the x,y grid, so that the x grid is running vertical on your screen and the y is horizontal, basex on a 90 degree rotation.

I would suggest useing the "Edit Area (All Floors) tool to select all items in your plan and rotate using the transform replicate tool.  This is by no means perfect, and you may have to fix some minor issues, but it leaves the x,y grid alone.  This should only be done if you want this rotation to be permanent.  If for whatever reason you just want to rotate it temprarily I'd suggest using hte rotate plan tool and dealing with the effects.

7 MB in my ANSI B  X12 layout template printed at 600 dpi....   Same in X10...   Not sure where the extra 10 MB comes from.  Page 2 perhaps ?

Quality is not even all that great once imported and then re PDF'd.   Might be worth while exporting a blank title sheet and then combining PDF's with a PDF editor or convert to .PNG before importing into chief layout.

Thanks.  A few things to try at least.

  3. I just discovered today that a 60KB PDF file I've imported into a layout causes the PDF file I print FROM the layout to be 17,000KB larger than if the imported PDF file is not included!  What gives?  Has anyone experienced this?  I have clients and contractors complaining that the file is too large for their email servers.

I've attached the culprit PDF if anyone wants to give this a go.  I can't include the chief files as they contain confidential information and I don't have the time to go through and remove them.  I might later if need be.  But I've tested this PDF file on a brand new layout with no other drawings and it still generates a ~17MB file for a single sheet!

With some playing around, I removed the cell borders from the spreadsheet and that reduced the generated file by aroudn 6,000KB.  I tried removing cell shading and that had no effect.  I've attached the spreadsheet as well if anyone wants to play around wiht that.  I hope I am missing something or doing something obviously wrong.  I've attached my template layout too in case anyone wants to play around with that.

    Thanks for having a look!

  4. I want to create a separate post for this, so the workaround does not get buried in the response to  Alchemyjim's post.  You can view his post below.

My method to create topographic lines in 3D is to copy the terrain perimeter and covert it to a road perimeter, 0 height, texture to match terrain.  Convert the contour lines to cad lines, convert to road markings.  Size and texture as desired.  There is no need to adjust the height of the elevation lines.

  5. I'm just trying your method out in X12 trial verison, it looks like you may have to manually adjust the elevation of the rope lights, as they have no setting relative to terrain.  The plan I am working on is dense with elevation lines, with many of them being spaced 12" apart in plan on a lot that is 63,000 sqft.  Aint nobody got time for that!  :P

The road markings automatically follow the elevations of the terrain and do not require manual positioning in the Z axis.

  6. That is a very simple solution, thanks!  Unfortunately I'm still working in X10, but I just came up with a workaround for this.

Copy the terrain perimeter and convert the polyline to a road perimeter.  Set it at 0 depth and match the terrain texture.

Convert the elevation lines to CAD and copy them back in, convert them to road markings.  Set the desired width and texture.

Schedule Defaults > Note Schedule > New Custom Category

Would I find it a different way in X11?  I don't have SSA at the moment so I'm not on the X12 beta.

I found it in CAD/TEXT/NOTE TYPE MANAGEMENT in X11.  I commented above that it should be in defaults, it seems like X12 may have moved it there?

You can create as many as you want.

Thanks.  Could you kindly point me in the direction of how to do that?  I have searched and haven't found a way.

    Thanks.

They will sell exactly zero more copies of Chief to new users, will distract from new features that many users may not even use but WILL sell copies of Chief to new users, and satisfy a very few current users who aren't going to change software any way. So why change it? Why change or complete anything?

The old addage in client relations is that it is easier to retain an existing client than to secure a new one.  This is a delecate balance.  You don't want to sit and do nothing but serve your existing client base, because you may miss new opportunities to expand.  But you don't want to neglect your existing client base to the point they leave in droves.  I think X11 has done just enough to keep people interested for a while...

I have design a remodel on my home--I want to add a second story to the house.  I did the plans in Chief Architect.  I then gave the plans to a structural engineer to add his information and stamp the plans.  Originally, he said he knew and had the Chief Architect program.  However, it turned out he had a very back level of Chief.  At first, he was working with me by marking up the pages and I would put the changes into chief.  Then when we were almost done he decided the plans had to be put into AutoCad.  So now some of the plans pages are in AutoCad and some are in Chief.  I am trying to get the plans into the county for permitting but they are telling me that the plans are missing Design Pressures, uploads, etc.  I talked to a Window Company today and I believe the Structural Engineer is just putting in the max numbers to get rid of the project.  But the max numbers will cause higher costs in the construction, as I understand.  I am looking for an Architect that will work with me and Chief to generally help me get the design through permitting.   I am in Lake Worth, FL Palm Beach County.  I am almost ready to give up on the project because of all the issues I have encounter and I haven't even started the construction.

You have posted this in the Suggestions forum, which is where you would suggest ideas for how chief architect could be improved.  You will want to post this instead in the Seeking Services forum, where you are more likely to get the responses you are looking for.

The NewEgg pdf I posted above was from the Canadian NewEgg site. DOH, didn't even know there was such a thing. Was wondering why the prices seemed so high. I'm going to reconfigure another system.

Haha, yeah we have our oen Amazon site and a few others too.  How did you get there from a US ip address?
