  1. Has anybody tried a roof plane with a zero pitch but the base line has an angle?  I don't know why,  but the rafters build parallel to the ground. I assumed the rafters would build differently.

I have never used a PITCHED ROOF BASELINE.  Why and where would someone want to pitch the baseline,  and if you find a reason to build the pitched baseline,  wouldn't you want the rafters to build differently than they do?

  2. Perry that is correct.

But unl4ess you use auto build you dont have the lookouts without a whole heap of stuffing around manually. I have not found a way to auto build trusses, an I missing something??

This is correct,  I was trying the auto build with my ANGLED BASELINE,  no go........  just wait.....  GW will prove me wrong.

  3. Perry

That option is OK for rafters but as we seem to have to manually build trusses we have no lookouts. or am I missing something.

I normally just draw in cross boxes in the cross sections, but this can be tedious if you have several.

I THINK YOU ARE MISSING SOMETHING,  I AUTO GET PURLINS FROM GABLE END BACK TO FIRST TRUSS,  IN FACT I HAVE TURNED THIS FEATURE OF FOR SOME REASON....  I THINK I TURNED IT OFF BECAUSE IT CLUTTERED UP DRAWING

    Scott

the purlins run across the trusses/rafters so another roof plane does not work, we dont use a ply liner. As Ian mentioned in OP we can have a space for the purlins by making the sheathing layer 45mm thick.

YEP TRIED IT,  I FAILED MISERABLY.

You can get auto purlins/lookouts and then extend using the extend tool and fence tool.

  4. Hello again,

I was posed an interesting question today and Im not sure how to address their issue. i want to change a default in the cabinet options that is more involved then the defaults you can set with the little wrench defaults.

Let me lay the ground work out for you. In Chief, at 24" a base cabinet comes in with a single auto door. At 25" width, that same cabinet will auto double door. The standard cabinets we spec and supply on projects, at 24", is a double door.

Now I know I can set the default cabinet type to be a double door cabinet, however any cabinet under 24 ( 18, 15, 12 ) will take the double door, which we do not want. We want it to remain as a single door. Essentially I want to know if there is a way I can change the cut off point for a cabinet to automatically generate the double doors down to 24" or greater, instead of 25" or greater. Advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

Change from AUTO DOOR to NOT AN AUTO DOOR

  5. I gotta say Steve, I don't get the track pad. I can't stand using the track pad on my laptop. Is using a stand alone track pad that much better?

I used a Kensington roller ball for a period of time during a bad bout of MS, but when that cleared up I went back to the mouse.

  6. You can go into the truss detail view and cut these out of the truss using the break line tool.

I created this truss by using the break line tool to cut out a small block then used align/distribute along line to copy and distribute it down the truss.

I wonder how you get the ply to show.  I  suppose the trusses were defined by a roof plane.

Here is a posible alternate solution.  Build the roof,  build the  trusses,  lock the trusses,  move the roof plane up 1-1/2",  space the rafters at 2000' oc  and then manually build rafters/nailers/purlins perpendicular to the trusses........  easy for a simple roof,  much tougher for a compiicated roof.

There must be a way to get the rafters/nailers/purlins to build auto.  How about putting the roof base line at the same angle as the roof pitch but of course perpendicular.  This way the purlins should build auto.

So it seems to me we need (2) roof planes,

    1st to define the rafters/trusses

2nd to define the purlin/nailers,  this plane will give us the roof ply.

  7. Steve,  I tested it out.  By and large I think it was pretty quick.  Big file,  34 mb.  Editing the roof in 3d and deleting windows and doors in 3d was very slow.  Editing in plan without 3d open was pretty quick.  I did a vid so you could visually see how fast or slow you think it is on my machine.

The vid will be on the youtube channel  "ds hall"  when done uploading.

  8. Steve,  I run an IMAC,  I think it is fast.  If I can run your plan on my computer and it is fast,  then it might be your machine  (it appears to be a fast IMAC).  If you  would like,  you can send me your plan that you think is slow,  let me try on my computer,  if it is slow on my computer,  then I think the plan is bad.  If it is fast on my computer,  maybe it is your computer that is slow.

  9. Curtis,  did you go to your digital locker and redownload the program.  We all went through this yesterday.  You must redownload,  (you will get another product key).

Others simply went to their digital locker and copied the new product key and put that in the dialog box that states that your license has expired.  I suspect you should be  up and running in 30 minutes.

  10. Yep

    Yep....

I am thinking a "Window Symbol" and using "Fixed".  One problem that I have with that however is that if you set all the Sash values to "0" then the glass disappears in 3D.

If it really important,  I  suppose the best solution is a psolid in the window frame,  don't like it,  but not a better alternative I can think of.

  11. Hmmm.....

Seems like I answered that one myself a couple of years back - senior moment !!!!

OTOH, someone suggested a thick door

Problem with that is you will get a door opening indicator in elevation.  Another  problem  (maybe),  would be it would show up in door schedule.  Probably better workarounds than calling a door.

  12. One of our guys reproduced the crash. I think he has it nailed down. If I understand it correctly if you undo the deletion of the only layout box that refers to a plan that is not currently open in other views the crash may occur.

BTW, thanks again for being diligent about sending in reports of issues. These reports are helping a lot to make Chief better.

If this was directed at me,  I do not understand the question.  Whatever the case may be,  I just tried to make it crash and it did not crash,  I think I might attribute this to the advise I received from Kirk which was  (validating the installed fonts,  do not understand why I need to do this,  but I took Kirk's advice,  so far so good) .....  I will continue to monitor and let you know if I experience another crash while UNDOING SOMETHING IN LAYOUT.

    Hello Scott,

I was able to reproduce this error when I opened the layout alone without opening the two attached plan files.

However, if I open the two plan files first then open the layout I don't get the error anymore.

I tested both of these scenarios on my Windows 8.1 machine and could not reproduce an error at all.

I did notice that on the Windows side I get a missing fonts warning so there are some fonts that are unique to Mac being used in these files.

The only thing I can suggest in light of this is to validate your installed fonts:

    - In a Finder window, go to '/Applications' and launch the Font Book.

    http://goo.gl/u6pbLn

    - Click 'Edit> Select All'.

    http://goo.gl/rNfJUJ

    - Click 'File> Validate Fonts'.

    http://goo.gl/FdA6ya

Other than that, can you confirm if you are getting the error when both the plans are opened first then the layout?

    Kirk

  13. My Glass Block Windows all show as a thin sheet of glass in 3D.  How do I get them to be 6" thick?

Dog   gone it Joe,  good question.  I think you are asking how do we define the glass thickness,  whether glass or glass block.

I don't know,  of course we can add a psolid,  but that is more work..    great question.....  Glenn?

  14. did you create a new layout page from the X6 file ?

when I brought up the layout from X5 the computer crashed whenever I tried printing - created a new layout from X6 file and now have no problems printing etc.

No I did not. When I get a chance I think I will start from scratch for both plan and layout, good suggestion.

I did send it in, and he suggested VERIFING my fonts. He gave me directions for doing that, I am monitoring situation to see if that fixed the crashing.

  15. Who the frick cares? It's not important...... as the Alaskan Son says, "it's a barometer", I think I was paraphrasing what michael said, seriously, if CA wants to use points to rate posts, let them do it and we should have fun with it, It's not important, what's important is that we as a community continue to strive to share ideas to make us as a whole that much better.

Now, how much longer do we'd have to wait until the NFL starts spring training? Played golf with JC Today, he beat me again, so what 's new? Give me another 20 years, and I will clean his clock........ Of course he will be 137 years old by then, but who is counting?

  16. Rain has been falling since last night

We need it buddy.  It is suppose to rain from now until 12:00 noon  (our golf game starts at 12:00)  then no rain from noon until the evening  (I can drive home without is raining),  and then the rain will start again this evening and continue thru Sunday.

If you guys ever want to travel and guarantee yourself good weather,  ask me along,  somehow I am always lucky.
