  1. Build deck framing, turn on the deck framing layer?
  2. My searches for Chief information almost always leads me to the old forum where my question is almost always answered. It's a very valuable resource IMO and will probably be removed eventually under the guise that the information is outdated. If it were true that the reason for its eventual removal were that the information is outdated then many of the teaching videos would have to be removed as well as older posts a in this forum. I, of course, do not have to pay for its presence so would like to see it preserved.
  3. Think about a larger power supply (750 - 800W) and perhaps a larger SSD. 120 GB will fill up really fast, otherwise it looks good.
  4. I never intended to get a Xeon let alone multiple Xeons but found a builder (have always built my own machines) from this forum and told him what I really wanted and that the CPU was the biggest bottle neck for Ray Tracing. I of course wanted the latest i7 but he had a couple of Xeons around and ran some tests for through put and found that these 2 relatively low range Xeons when OC'd slightly out-performed the then current i7 crop. $2500.00 all in so I went for it. It was not for the faint of heart. When the machine arrived (HUGE case) with the cooling fans connected the stress from shipping had wrecked the MB and that had to be replaced. I had had a lot of experience building so it was not that bad but if you didn't have that experience then it would be no fun at all. After it was all said and done I'm very happy and feel pretty lucky to have gotten the deal I did. I'm not sure when I'll upgrade again (or what I'd upgrade to) and having a machine that's fast enough is a very rare experience as all of us know.
  5. I've overclocked almost all of my recent (last 5 years) machines with no problems whatsoever. It's not a simple task but I'm not the brightest bulb and got it done by doing a lot of research and investigation. The speed benefits were well worth it and if you have a good cooling system and keep the overclock conservative it's a no brainer and well worth the effort - or just buy a faster chip. (and overclock that )
  6. http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/cs-031089.htm BTW Dennis I know nothing about the Turbo Boost monitor - I'm just googling the term. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=intel%20turbo%20boost%20monitor
  7. Pros - faster, cons - unstable, heat. How? https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=i74700mq+overclock Looks like the i7 4700MQ has a turbo mode, if your bios supports it. That's the easiest overclock.
  8. Very interesting Graham. I've got a Q6600 on an older machine and remember when it was the bomb, now it's more like a bomb. Just tested on a random RT with the Xeons, not the previous test RT. 12 cores 4:46 24 cores 3:30
  9. I have all my cores set to RT and don't see any slow down doing other operations other than the sound gets wonky when I'm watching cat videos while doing a RT. Tried using fewer cores and only noticed slightly slower RT times, but no real improvements in the rest of Chief's operations.
  10. This is also what I understood from the OP and didn't know it was an option but would like that functionality to be returned. Seems like a really nice feature.
  11. I had no idea that tool existed. Thanks
  12. resulting in the output of 500?? ..or 350?
  13. DraftSight is free and will save to these formats.
  14. Some things yes. The 'things' you're working on? Not likely. Only because there's an unwritten law out there that every new improvement will affect everything but what you're needing it for.
  15. Every user understands the frustration of learning Chief. It can be down right crazy making at times. 'When you feel up to tackling it' I suggest posting your plans and questions anytime to the main forum and you'll most likely get the help you need. That's what I do and try to give back with solutions when I can. I'd be happy to help but I'm not the sharpest tool in the Chief shed and if I can't figure it out - you must by now know exactly what I would do with the problem - I'd post it here. Truly hope that helps.
  16. It is, of course, dependent on each specific project and the case where we did it we used beams to span certain areas that allowed us to open up large areas of the living space and to ignore a lot of questionable very old framing in the attached garage, and its associated footing/foundation. We just basically went around the questionable old stuff with an entire new structure. Worked out pretty sweet, but of course won't work in every case.
  17. Really? You included the plan and asked the relevant questions and the forum help couldn't get it remedied? Sorry but I'm not buying it. Try again, post the plan, and don't give up and don't go away when it gets crazy making and someone here WILL get it solved. I can't remember a situation that wasn't resolved here in some form. This is an amazing resource but you have to hang in there and keep trying.
  18. Not something I would usually participate in but am going this year as a member of the User Feedback Panel and am really looking forward to it. It will be nice to meet all the Chief users and the people who actually give us this great program. Plus it's been a long time since I've been in the Rockies and can't wait to visit Coeur d'Alene. If your company is thinking about sending you perhaps you could bring a specific question that your company thinks will help it and get some specific feedback on that issue, or maybe learn some techniques that will help your company. I know if I was sending an employee I would need a specific reason for sending them other than giving them a great vacation. Either way I hope to see you there Jonathan.
  19. Greg, I was introduced to the technique by a local builder and was a little skeptical but quickly saw how practical it was. It allows for so much flexibility when running new electrical/mechanical/plumbing and doesn't disturb the underlying framing. A great technique that should be considered for any second story addition. I think I even remember Perry advising on how to get it done in Chief as well.
