  1. Not a fan of Dell. I had a bad feeling when they bought out Alienware.
  2. Haven't had any issues with Windows 10 since the first few updates a few months ago. Very solid OS.
  3. - Puget Systems is good. - Agree with Perry, Alienwear is also good. - Maingear Get the best Graphics card your budget can handle. Get SSD storage only. My Puget Spirit rig listed below cost around $2600 (without the monitor) and is screaming fast. I would highly recommend avoiding the big names even though they will build systems for less. They supplement their costs with excessive bloatwear which slows a system down. Use a custom PC builder that is dedicated to clean installs of Windows. Some will recommend Mac which is fine. I tried a fully loaded iMac and was underwhelmed. CA ran fine on it but it runs much better (for me anyway) on a cleanly installed Windows system. Plus there are subtle nuances in the interface that differentiate the two and I just prefer the Windows interface better.
  4. So I pulled the trigger on the iPad Air 2. So far I'm impressed with the speed of the device and I have experienced no lag with Room Planner (my 1st gen iPad mini lagged quite a bit). I did a test house site measure (my own) and it went very smoothly. I only measured out my 1st floor which is about 3500 sf with the garage and still no lag. It was definitely faster than using my touch screen laptop on site. I use a laser measuring tool but I have no desire to link it with blue tooth to my device. I haven't had any trouble holding the iPad in one hand and the laser in the other. Pros: 1) Very simple interface which reduces measuring time (for me anyway) 2) The device measures to the drywall which is a big plus, though this can be set up on CA. 3) Adjustable wall thickness - big plus over previous versions. 4) You can hand draw walls now, although it's kind of quirky that they have to connect to an adjacent wall to create another room (not a bust for me). This feature can also be used to reduce a room size. 5) Annotations are now a reality. 6) When I import the drawing into CA it adopts all my plan defaults. Cons: 1) Library items are not compatible with CA. This is a very big deal and I'm hoping that this is addressed soon. I've contacted the developers to get more info. 2) Really really really need to be able to hand draw CAD lines and arcs. There is a very clunky way to drop in a line but it's time consuming and not really worth the effort. Summary: This a very usable app. I did site measure an actual job last week and it went very smoothly. I would be willing to pay for the app itself and transferable library items if there were just a few minor improvements. Time will tell whether more CA users begin to adopt this tool for their regular use. I suspect it's not being utilized much right now based on the minimal input on the user forum. I plan on continuing to use it for on site measuring (keeping my laptop with me just in case). I would be interested to know what apps others are using if not Room Planner.
  5. This is something I'm delving into as well. I tried Room Planner on my iPad mini shortly after it was released and was very underwhelmed. I recently picked it up again and the updates are good. They are definitely making progress. Even my light weight Sony Vaio Duo gets cumbersome measuring as-builds so I've been practicing with RP. I'm about to purchase an iPad air 2 and will try it out with a bigger screen (and faster processor) and follow up later. It may be a month or two.
  6. Shut the front door! Love it!
  7. I've updated my Windows 8.1 desktop and my Windows 7 laptop, no problems on either system. One thing I did notice, there was about 3gb more space on my desktop and about 5gb more on my laptop when the downloads were complete. I was not expecting that. And yes they do seem to be running faster, bias aside. Looks like MS may have hit a home run with this massive roll out. I've heard of a few glitches but nothing major.
  8. I've been up and running for over 3 hours since the Nvidia driver updates. No problems or glitches, very smooth. It even feels a tad faster but that's probably me being bias (because I love the OS).
  9. Windows 10 Download Page So far the Nvidia driver is taking longer to download than the OS did. Of course my crappy internet may have something to do with that. I have been beta testing Windows 10 on my touchscreen laptop and I must say I really like it a lot. Almost enough to forgive MS for Windows 8
  10. Not sure if I follow you exactly on that Mick, but I did download the most recent CA update on my Win10 machine if that answers your question.
  11. The only problem I've noticed thus far is that houses still will not design themselves with Windows 10.....
  12. Is anyone else beta testing? I haven't run CA at length yet but what I have done has run smoothly. Microsoft has done a nice job creating a hybrid of Windows 7 and 8 with some great new forward thinking ideas. When the official release happens at the end of July I'll be upgrading my laptop workstation and run it for a day or two before I update my desktop.
  13. I'm referring to the drop down selector in the dialog box. I often find myself scrolling through that mess to find what I need. Is there a way to change the order? Or better yet, is there a way to remove the lines I never use?
  14. Has anyone else noticed a difference in the way CA works with the touch screens? With X6 I could zoom in and out without accidentally selecting an item. With X7, whenever I move the screen by hand (which I don't do exclusively but regularly) CA selects whatever I am touching. I find myself using the space bar constantly to escape these selections. It's not a huge deal but a bit of an annoyance. Was this done by design?
  15. Is that a brick quoin corner or a separate wall? If it's a separate wall the window will not go into that brick wall unless there is enough room for the entire window. You can also try double clicking the arrow symbol and check "ignore casing for opening resize" and see if that helps.
  16. That's something else that bugged me about the iMac, pdf files were on average 10 times as large as the same pdf files on my windows machine.
  17. Figured I would open up this can of worms again So I've had my iMac for over a year now. While I'm satisfied with the system performance (running X6) I was never really blown away. There was this annoying lag with some commands (mainly roof commands, even in 2D). So about 2 or 3 months ago I broke out my old Puget PC (nearly 4 years old) and it easily blows the doors off the iMac. I like the iMac for imaging and I'm a huge fan of the Mac filing system, but I am convinced that the Windows platform just runs smoother (for me anyway). I'm curious what others think now that the Mac release is over a year old. I will add that when I upgraded the Puget to Windows 8.1 (from 7), performance improved quite a bit.
  18. Perry, have you always had shadows on in preview view? For me personally that would slow my system down quite a bit.
  19. I've found that sometimes this happens after an edit. Most of the time I can select the roof dbx in 3D and then click ok and the frieze will fill in. This doesn't always work but more often than not it does.
  20. Yes it does! Now I almost exclusively use the command key and hold the left mouse button to drag across the screen. Of course if you are on a lap top that's not going to help you without a mouse. I use a mouse and a trackpad on my iMac.
  21. I was really struggling with this so I did some research and found out it is definitely an OS issue. I found that many have installed the Adobe reader for better viewing and it seems to be a lot better than the native Mac preview. Just thought I would share because viewing PDF's on preview was painfully slow after the update.
  22. I experience the same lag in 2D. I just downloaded an update to Yosemite, hopefully that will clean it up a bit.
  23. Anyone else having this issue? I get a 2 to 3 second lag after every move that involves walls or roofs, just about any 3D related item. I'm about to break out my old Windows machine if this keeps up.
