I've built a 100' x 76' metal building. I put a front "porch" on with with lower roofs and a heavy timber truss with columns and pilasters. I need to create two wrap around porch/slabs with railing and roofs overhead. Every time I try, the wall coverings change and weird things happen. So I built the wrqp around porches away from the building and then moved them in place. The same things happen. Very confused. Larry

I'm not sure what I did, but all of a sudden in full overview CA goes into render mode. I've got a deadline and it isn't helping! Thanks Larry

I'd like to hear the tech response as well. It seems odd. I use an intuit tablet since I do a lot of video editing,. animation and graphics. I have three macs and one PC, but rely on my imac most. THX Larry

Putting people in views for renderings - where are the objects?

Joseph, Could you suggest some search terms? I tried people objects and image libraries. THX -
Attached you will see the front elevation of a metal building where the camp wants a heavy timber end truss on the lower roof. I used the porch tool, then added columns. Now I need to make truss. Not sure how. I Iooked for a tool to start by drawing a beam but user guide came up empty. Suggestions? THX Larry

Thank you! I I had skipped roofing and went straight to the first metals in the hierarchy. Would have totally missed Exposed fasterner. Larry

I created a basic four wall building and went to use the perspective camera and all I get is a black window. Matter of fact no matter what view tool I use I get a black screen.

I was afraid of that! The first phase is just a rendering so I guess I can fake it. However, I was surprised I could not find rpanel as a material or a standing seam metal roof. I must be looking in the wrong places. Larry

Well I just took the plunge and purchased CA yesterday after weeks of training videos and lots of questions. My first project is a simple butler type metal building for a children's camp. The building is an assembly building with a foyer and stage platform total size of 72' x 100' It is in north Texas, slab on grade with a 2x4 insulated wall inside with carpet finish up to 8' and bare plywood above that. Metal siding and horizontal girts. It will have decorative trusses and corbels at the main entry to go with the camps cottage and nautical look. At first glance I did not see a template for this type of building other than commercial. Does anyone know if there is a template for this type of building among the Chief Talk community or elsewhere? Any suggestions on how to get started? Thank You Larry

I'm in Princeton and thinking of selling one of my licenses of data cad and buying CA. So I'll be a new user, however, I've studied a lot of the tutorials and find it intuitive. Larry

Communicating comprehensive design and CD services to new clients
Clemsongrad replied to Clemsongrad's topic in General Q & A
Showing two different sets is good. (Wonder where I can get a poor set) I'm thinking that if I had something to quote that says the average builder has to put in a contingency factor to cover unknowns. Or, with a detailed cost of materials they can get a better bid as they act as general contractor and sub out trades. In marketing you want to show the benefits. What are the benefits? Larry -
Communicating comprehensive design and CD services to new clients

Let me put this another way. I want the client to value the fact that they will get not only plans and elevations, but full framing drawings, material quantities with pricing for cost analysis, 2D AND 3D views, bathrooms and kitchens they can see what they are getting. Energy performance. A set of drawings that will save them money. This is a presentation before I'm hired. How do you get them to GRASP the value? Thanks Larry -

Communicating comprehensive design and CD services to new clients

Both of these projects are for friends who need to be educated. My question was how to best educate them. THX Larry -
I've used Auto Achitect (Cadcraft) with Autocad, Microstation, Softplan, Datacad, Sketchup and now considering Chief Architect. To me the selling point is excellent communication of ideas to owner and their builder. I have two residential home projects and I am wondering what others have done to showcase the features CA affords a client. Simply put, in a crowded marketplace, how can I best sell my services to a client who could go to a builder and buy a tract home, or to a blueprint shop and get a set of plans. I'm not speaking of design ability as I can show past projects, but how to sell a very comprehensive set of drawings and for them to appreciate what they will do to avoid miscommunication and mistakes. How can present this quickly and efficiently? Thanks! PS. I love sketch up and really like datacad, but think the 3D model and drawing extraction from it is the way to go. Larry

Does CA automatically draw corner let-in bracing for shear strength or shear walls? If it is needed how does CA handle it?
