Perimeter footings and thickened slab down the center in the long direction. My friend asked me to give him a simple drawing for his contractor to get a price. I thought I'd just draw the slab, not the house above, but ran into several issues. 1. The perimeter footings aren't chamfered back to the slab. 2. I don't know how to get a thickened slab down the center. Would it be better to draw the house above and auto generate the slab on grade? How do it get chief to make me a thickened slab? Thanks Larry

That did it! I had forgotten what point to point meant. THX guys

French doors with only one door swinging open
Clemsongrad replied to Clemsongrad's topic in General Q & A
I should have seen this! I'm sorry to ask such a lame question. Thanks very much. I was trying to fix it in the plan view. -
There is a simple answer to this I'm sure, but I don;t know it! Client wants a set of french doors at an entry way, but want only one to be operable. I've drawn it and both doors show door swings. How do I get only one door symbol to be open? THX! Larry

I'm a bit confused about the dimensioning tool in two situations. In a laundry alcove when I use the interior dimension tool I assume it should measure face of drywall to face of drywall. What I get is 7' - 10", but the arrows go right to the stud. In the alcove I have a washer and dryer and a utility closet. The dimension arrows show a correct 2'-3" wide for both the washer and dryer, but the arrow stops short of the symbols and also go to the stud. so when I add up each of the three dimensions I get 7'-8". See attached capture.

Roof still not right. The ridge needs to be in the center of the house. Can't find way to force fascias to be same height and still get porch roof at different slope. This has got to be something simple I'm overlooking. It seems auto generating the roof should work if all the settings are right. THX! Larry Dudleys 16x34 Ranch 1114168ft porchtest.plan

Had already done that. House gable wrong Can't find way to attach new pict.
-
Making progress. I got the roof to break and at the right place, but the fascia height became higher at the porch and thereby made the center of the roof over the house go off center. .....

One question. The two side walls are part house wall and part deck. Do you set all to gable ends? Meaning open 4 walls for gables and one wall at the edge of the deck? THX

Well, thank you everyone. Before posting this I had created two roof planes and matched them. It wasn't too bad, but I said to myself, If CA can do mansards and Gull wings, by golly, I want to learn how to do it using the tools for double pitches. For educational purposes I'd still like to attempt to use a single roof plane. I am very appreciative of the help. Any roof gurus out there who want to give it a shot? THX Larry

I have a very simple small house design, but even after watching all the roof training videos I'm still not sure how to handle this. I've included the file. The cabin is 16 x 34 with an 8' porch with roof. The upper pitch is 6/12, but I can't get the lower roof to change pitch to 3/12. I tried to control it at the porch "wall" and then the house wall. neither worked. I also have something weird going on with the porch beams. I want the pitch to flatten out over the porch obviously. Thanks! Larry CA latest version Dudleys 16x34 Ranch 1114168ft porch.plan

I use photoshop extensively and also Sketchup and had not realized how heavily I depend on throwing on the sheet non printing guidelines in all I do. lines and objects snap to them without becoming connected and since they are not real objects they don't get in the way. Does CA have anything equivalent? I've watched dozens of tutorials but have not ran across it yet. Thanks! Clemson grad

I'm not asking for a total solution including all the corbels. For this phase I just want a solution for the change in wall thickness. It seems to me that it might work to draw all the walls at the thickness it is at the windows would come first, and then add an additional wall at the areas where it is thicker. Yes No?
-
Yes, I should have put this on to begin with!
-
How would you go about modeling a 4 story brick flour mill where the walls change in thickness in two ways: each of the 4 flours are less thick and the areas below the windows are also less thick. My guess is that you would make different wall types first and draw the floor plan by drawing a section, change type, draw another section and then change type and so on. Will that create any unforseen problems down the road? Or would you draw the all the walls the thickness at the window and add the extra brick added on in each area? Not your typical project! THX Larry

I'm wasting a lot of time on this and looking for a solution. I'm doing interior dimensions and when I try to adjust the dimension string locations I keep getting the room polygons. I hit tab to cycle to other objects, but still not getting the dimensions. Any ideas? Second question. I want to change the default text size on the interior dimension strings. How? THX Larry

Thanks! I replaced and resized sink at it resolved it!

I'm not sure why my attachment is not working,,, tr again
-
See attached jpg Not sure how this happened. I don't know how to fix it. Thoughts? Also, look at the counter edge between the sink and stove. It appears it projects farther than the others yet when I open it the overhangs all say 1". Hmmm THX Larry

I'm all in on the building model approach that CA gives us and the savings it provides. However, there is nothing that saves more time than having a sheet of standard details, right? So, how do you guys (gals) approach your projects that regularly use standard details with notes? The building may give you a view, but it doesn't automatically give notes on foundation details, typical walls, etc. My guess is that everyone has standard details and then inserts details for conditions that are not typical? I'm all ears on understanding more of the CA Construction Document process. Thank You! Larry

I've had CA about 2 weeks now I may have bumped a setting inadvertently. When retracing I've become dependent on watching the number of passes and time of renders. The last several are not showing this progress. Other than the bottom of the scene is there a way to monitor the renders? I've got a hunch the setting where you indicate a ending point to renders could be involved, but I have an importnant one "in the hopper" and need to know. Thanks for your help Larry

Never mind! I found m-rock in the additional materials and that will work! THX

It's been a long day and I'm bushed. I went to change the stacked stone on my model with another lighter stone and can't find any. I assumed there would be dozens of materials. Did I miss them? THX

Thanks, Perry! I was trying to learn how to use a bump map earlier and watched the water tutorial. Haven't mastered it yet.

I'm getting close to finishing the model. What techniques or tools do I need to use to make the terrain look like real grass and not tiled? Also how do I blend it so that it harmonizes with the background images. I've searched the training videos but have not found any that address this. If there is, I'd like to know the name. Thank you! Larry I'm on a new/used PC and still have to get the specs off it.
