TIps On Elevation Layouts & Measurements.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm fairly new to the Chief Architect community. Hello to everyone! I'm still learning about CA (I've been using YouTube to teach myself). I would appreciate help from all the experienced users, hopefully creating professional friendships. I'm from Miami, FL and would love to learn more about this program. It's a pleasure to be a part of this community!

As I'm still learning the bits and pieces, I'd love to learn more on building elevation layouts. Unfortunately, I'm still struggling with converting plans to elevation layouts. Also, has anyone encountered obstacles with measurements? I'm the designer at a kitchen cabinet company. Often, the actual wall measurements taken at the home don't always work in Chief. Often by a couple of inches, sometimes by a foot or more. I'm worried I'm still messing up on the 3D renditions.

Could someone help me out? I'd love to learn how to make the elevation layouts. And some reassurance would be awesome!

Thanks in advance! I look forward to meeting new mentors and friends!

Just post your questions here and we all will help. I'm sure being in Florida, you might have special conditions but we will still try. If you get the correct answer from anyone, just make sure to give me the point.

Hi, and Welcome, as Perry said ,post as many questions as you like on the Q&A Forum as you want to.

It sounds like you dimensions are maybe setup incorrectly ,as I assume you are measuring existing homes? In which case your Dims. should be set to locate Surfaces ,not the wall dimension Layer otherwise you could/see differences due to the thickness of the drywall at least or possibly 1/2 the thickness of interior walls or even the thickness of exterior walls as dims maybe defaulted to the Wall Dimension Layer which for exterior walls is outside of Framing.

Probably best to post a question on the Q&A about the Wall Elev. there are a number of good kitchen guys here who are happy to help. It's always good to add picks to your posts showing the issues you are having ,and even attaching the plan in alot of cases is very helpful and the quickest way to get good answers.

Mick.

Welcome to the CA Forum, Fredgar!

I worked designing homes in Florida from 1972 - 2008 (ugh, what a tough year in FL). I'm now in Huntsville, AL and spend 1/2 my time designing kitchens, 1/4 doing interiors for Realtors, & 1/4 goofing off.  My voice will be part of a choir of others offering you help nearly 24-7. You'll find help at odd hours from our international community.

You'll soon find that to get the best help, ask the best question enlisting photos, screen shots, a compressed copy of the plan, a step-by-step run down of what caused the problem, and what you've tried. Of course, it's best to start with the Help function built into CA. Then search this forum for questions similar to your's. Doing research to solve a problem is one of the best ways to learn CA.

It's also helpful to set up your Profile & Signature - including your location and the specifics of your system. (For instance, there may be a known issue with a video card.)

It won't be long before you are offering advice!

BTW: I bought CA soon after Hurricane Andrew (ver 1) so that our general contractor could communicate in Miami & Coral Gables via 3-D graphics to non-English speaking tradesmen. Those old 3-D's were cartoonish by today's standards - but they were worth a thousand words! Chief Architect has both made & saved us a lot of money over the years. You've made a great investment.

Welcome Aboard!

Perry, Mick & Cheryl

Thanks for being so welcoming. I appreciate your kindness! I will take your advice and apply it to my next batch of projects. I apologize for not replying sooner, I have a bad habit of seldom checking the forum area of CA.

Although we're a community, I appreciate your time to educate a new user like me. In a way, I'm an unofficial apprentice/intern, haha!

Please keep well until our next encounter!

      Dear all,

I'm new to the forums and i've tried to find my way in the already existing topics, such as
      - https://www.chiefarchitect.com/products/sysreq.html
      - https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/21934-hardware-recommendations/?tab=comments#comment-179153

I could not find an answer yet, hopefully some of you can help me out.
I am currently struggling with Chief Architect Premier, ray traces are really slow at 1080P (1 pass takes like 15-30 min)
Also working for in PBR is making my system really really slow and it is getting frustrating.
My model is not complex and I think I need an hardware upgrade.

Current machine (Notebook - April 2014)
      X•BOOK 15CL56 NVIDIA GTX770m 3GB, Full HD (+/- 20000 3DMARK) Intel® CoreTM i7-4710MQ (6M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz) - 47Watt (Quadcore) 16GB DDR3L (1600MHz)
New system specifications (not bought yet)
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Boxed MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS2K16G4D30AESB  (32GB Ram) Intel 660p 1TB Solidstate drive Graphic card? Nvidia? Any Advice?
I think the 32 GB of memory is already an overkill, not sure if this is needed.
But I'm mostly wondering regarding the choice of CPU and Graphics card

Is this a good setup? What kind of performance improvements can I expect? What would be your advice?

      Thank you!

      Regards,
      Peter

I'm working on this project for a summer class.. I'm finished and was taking perspectives and a couple ray trace. I changed some of the settings in the ray chase for lights and such, and then I move to another part of the building and the ceiling is gone!! What did I do wrong? And how do I fix it?! Please help!!
I attached a snap of the outside of the building...no ceiling in the center (also I know my glass panels extend above the ceiling don't judge me)

HELLO, IM BULDING A NEW DESKTOP/ TOWER AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE ON WHICH SPECS WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO USE FOR CHEIF.  RAY TRACE PRODUCTIVITY IS A ABSOLUTE MUST AND I DONT WANT TO SACRIFICE GRAPHICS CARD QUALITY EITHER, I WAS DEAD SET ON THE WORKSTATION UNTIL I READ ALL OF THE COMMENTS ON HERE ABOUT THE QUADPRO NOT WORKING WELL IN CA......?  REALLY.   MOVING ON, HERE ARE MY CHOICES:

      #1.  INTEL ZEON  W-2155 3.3GHz, 4.5GHz TURBO, 10C, 13.75M CACHE, HT, (140W) DDR4-2666)
             NVIDIA  QUADPRO P4000, 8GB (5820T)      32GB (2X16GB) 2666MHz DDR4 RDIMM ECC                                    WORKSTATION
              M.2 512GB PCLe NVMe CLASS 50 SSD       2.5" 1TB 7200rpm SATA HARD DRIVE

      #2.  INTEL CORE I9 7900X (10-CORE, 13.75MB CACHE, UP TO 4.5GHz WITH INTEL TURBO BOOST MAX 3.0)
             NVIDEA GeFORCE GTX 1080 WITH 8GB GDDR5X         32GB QUAD CHANNEL DDR4 AT 2666MHz                    ALIENWARE
             512 GB M.2 PCLe SSD (BOOT) + 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/S (STORAGE)

I HAVE SURFACE BOOK WITH PURFORMANCE  BASE INTEL I7 6600U 2.8 2.81 AND NVIDEA GeFORCE GTX 965M WITH 2GB DEDICATED AND I HAVE A FEW  GOOD & THEN A WHOLE BUNCH OF NOT SO GOOD DAYS WITH RUNNING (2) ASUS 27 " 1080 DISPLAYS FOR THE PAST 3-4 MONTHS IVE JUST REVERTED BACK TO ONE SCREEN BECAUSE ITS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE OF THE SCREEN FREEZING AND THE I GET "C.A HAS STOPPED WORKING.....WINDOWS IS CHECKING FOR SOLUTION..... UGH......    AND I GUESS I DIDNT EXPECT THESE ISSUES WHEN I PAID $2799.99 FOR IT 11 MONTHS AGO.  ....... AND SLIGHTLY HESITANT ABOUT THE NVIDEA GeFORCE SERIES BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF STABILITY THAT IM EXPERIENCING AND IN ADDITION, IT WOULD BE REALL REALLY NICE IF THE NVIDEA GEFORCE GTX CARDS HAD DRIVERS THAT WORKED WITH WINDOWS 10 DRIVE UPDATES BECAUSE IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO USE MY DOOR LABEL AGAIN SOME TIME OR ATLEAST BE ABLE TO PLACE A LIBRARY OBJECT WITHOUT HAVING TO CLOSE C.A AFTER EACH OBJECT IS PLACED...... ALREADY CALLED TECH AS I HAVE SSA AND ROLLED BACK BUT THE SURFACE BOOKS JUST KEEP ROLLING BACK FORWARD....ITS BEEN GREAT... SO MOVING ON I HOPE ONE OF THESE TWO OPTIONS WILL DO GOOD AT BOTH RT AND RENDER BETTER AND HOPEFULLY BOTH MULTI THREAD WELL.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH SYSTEM YOU WOULD RECOMMEND AND IF YOU HAVE TIME LETME KNOW WHY.

      THANKS

I have a client who had a set of hand drawn plans converted into AutoCAD to submit for plan check/approval.  They are missing certain components that need to be added, see "scope of work".  Have a dropbox folder for review if anyone is interested in bidding.  The completed set of CAD files will be given to an Idaho engineer for review and submission.

Attached are samples of the files.

      Hello,

I have an uncle who asked me to design a dream home for his new ranch.  He has many children and wanted a large home.  I was wondering if anyone could give some general feedback on the plan and offer any suggestions?  If he likes it enough, he may give me a room in the house!  I would appreciate any feedback.  One issue I currently have is the automatic roof on the rear section of the third floor.  It is covering the windows in those rooms.  Any suggestions on that?  I would like the third floor to look smaller then the other floors from the outside but still have the rooms that are up there.  I have included a download link to the file due to it being too large to attach here.
