Q: Importing 3D-Symbols With Textures?

Hi,

With help from you guys, I have learned a lot about Chief. I've never started a topic before.. because I could always find an answer for my questions by browsing past topics.
But now I am stuck at something. Maybe someone can help me out?

I recently found sketchup's 3D warehouse and have imported a number of symbols succesfully. However, when I start to import models with a texture and try to import it into Chief... the results are bad.

For example:
I found a nice looking faucet in 3d Warehouse (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=1ae1609816687a883792c04fd8184496).
Notice the chrome texture in this model?

When I try to import this model as a 3D symbol. The texture seems to be missing or misplaced.

I have tried to go to 'plan material' for the texture and change the settings... resulting in some pretty hilarious results.

Nothing seems to work. It would be great to import these models in my chief project with the original textures... so I hope somebody can help me out with this.

Thanks in advance!

Generally, a metal texture will not appear to be correct in a "Render" view.  If you do a "Ray Trace" is should look correct.

If that doesn't work, open the Symbol and change the material to "Chrome" (there are a lot of materials in Chief's Library).

Do not use the "Spray Can" to change the material - use the dbx.

Thank you for your quick response Joe.

The metal texture doesn't show up after a Ray Trace either. It seems it is just totally misplaced.
I was kinda hoping I would not had to change the materials in Chief. With this metal texture, replacing it with one of Chief's library is a easy, quick and good solution.
But what if I would like to import something like this?:

Not my taste exactly... but it does make a good example. These textures are custom for this model. I would love to import something like this in Chief to make my interiors look more detailed. But when I do... I always end up with scrambled textures.

Any other suggestions I could try or do I just have to search and import my textures manually?

I think if you look closer especially in the case of the antique Chest that the model is actually cleverly using pictures pasted on each face , I have seen this on a lot of furniture lately eg the KARE Line and they don't import correctly as .skp's , some I have found import ok as .dae , as in this chest but not .3ds etc and others just don't work at all.

Wow, never would've thought of that. It seems the .dea are importing correctly, or at least satisfactory. Thank you Mick!!
