X16 Align "Foundation to exterior of layer" no longer working?

On a brick veneer house with brick foundation exterior layer, I used to be able to go into wall settings and align the face of brick veneer to the face of brick foundation by Wall Type Definition> Wall Settings> Foundation to exterior of layer: and set all wall types to exterior layer 1 Brick.  In X16 this is no longer working.

I have to move the foundation wall type 8" cmu with 4" brick settings layer 1 brick and layer 2 air gap back into main layer for the auto build or align to work properly.

Does anyone have any feedback on what happened after X15 or why the align to exterior face brick no longer works.  The only Chief Tutorials I can find date back to before 2021 and the user interface does not match.

I've found a work around but i don't remember it being this hard with x12-x15

I don't remember anything changing with this in either X16 or X17.  I even checked the X16 migration guide and didn't see anything about foundation walls:

You might have messed up something in the wall types or some other setting.  You should post your plan so someone can take a look at it.

See attached zips and the images of what I have to do to make the foundation align.  I remember in the past setting wall "settings>foundation to exterior of layer" to match between the veneer brick and foundation brick used to work.  I thought there was a setting that said align to exterior face somewhere as well but I couldn't find it in x16.

Moving foundation brick to the main layer is annoying because I have sections of the plan that would be sided and i actually do want a brick ledge on those sections.

It has been a few years since I did a brick home so i clearly am missing something.  I hope.

Thank you for your help.

Here are a few key things to understand:

1.  Foundation to Exterior of Layer is a setting that affects or aligns to the foundation wall below.  It does not affect the wall itself in any way aside from being used for its alignment with the wall below.

2.  Similarly, Foundation Offset only affects or aligns to the foundation wall below and is measured from whichever layer you assigned to the aforementioned Foundation to Exterior of Layer setting.

3.  Perhaps most importantly, your foundation wall aligns with the wall above based on its own Main Layer.  That is, the main layer of your foundation wall aligns with the following settings in the wall above: whatever layer you have assigned to the Foundation to Exterior of Layer settings plus or minus any defined Foundation Offset

NOTE:  When using the Align With Wall Below tool, the opposite is also true, the wall above would align with the wall below based on those same settings, the main point though is that the foundation wall uses its main layer for alignment while the wall above uses the settings in the Wall Properties tab.

In my wall Foundation Offset is set to 0 in both examples.  And Foundation to Exterior of Layer are set to exterior face of brick.

I don't understand why this wouldn't automatically align the brick faces.  Similarly why with the stock brick or siding and foundation settings why this wouldn't align the face of main layers stud and cmu?

Am I missing another setting on a different dialog box?  Maybe in the build foundation or general default?  I know that the face of bricks and the stud to cmu used to work before I moved to X16?

If I do the workaround in the photos above, I have to setup a different foundation type that moves the brick and air gap back to the exterior layer for the sections of the plan that have siding walls w/ brick ledge with rowlock.

Thanks again for your help.

Please read my post again.  A few key points regarding your specific plan though:

  • Your foundation wall's Main Layer is "Grey-Blocks Running Bond"
  • Your wall above is set to Foundation to Exterior of Layer "White Brick" with a Foundation Offset of 0"
  • What you are telling Chief to do is to align your "Gray-Blocks..." to your "White Brick" with no offset and that is exactly what Chief is doing.
  • If I were you, I would probably address this by just adding the appropriate Foundation Offset to your upper walls.

This is exactly what does happen with the default Siding-6 wall and the default 8" CMU wall.
