CassieAnn15
I have been working on a dining room for a client of mine and have created a model of the room for them with furniture that is as similar as I can make it to the real thing. I have run into an issue with being able to have different types of material on the top and bottom or front and back of the chairs. In this case the clients chairs have two different fabrics one on the front and another on back but I haven't had any luck with being able to edit the chair to make this happen. I am aware of how to change the existing materials and import my own but not how to edit the chair itself to be able to add or change what materials go where. The yellow is supposed to be only on the back side where the pink is going to go on the inside of the chair but with this model which is the closest I can find to the real chair I can only have one material for the seat and another for the base. I have searched high and low for help with this but cannot seem to find a solution so I thought I would ask here before I totally gave up. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)
TeaTime
Generally speaking you won't be able to. This comes down to the Material Components defined in the object. For example the Contemporary Chair only has two material components: the "seat" here applies the same material to both the seat and the back. Unfortunately this is not something CA can control, you'd need to do that in some 3D modeling program.

I oughta give you a demerit for this but that's not how I roll. Use the Delete Surface tool to remove everything but the pieces of fabric you want to keep. Create Symbols of the remaining pieces. Make a Symbol of the chair with the fabric you want to change deleted. Now maneuver your new fabric piece Symbol into the proper orientation on the chair. When everything is aligned properly create a new Symbol of the reupholstered chair. 1

In all fairness I'm not WRONG, you can't edit the symbol directly, but that is a great and clever way of creating a new symbol out of existing ones though. It should be noted that Delete Surfaces can be finicky. If you do anything to rebuild the 3D view they'll come back and you'll have to re-delete them. It's not really DELETING anything, just temporarily hiding them.
