The only problem I see using a symbol for the panels is that you might have to custom make many panel symbols for one ceiling depending how the panels "work out" around the outside edge and how the room is shaped, but I don't really see another option.
You should be able to use one panel symbol for all the tegular tile. Simply add stretch planes and resize for the perimeter cuts.

I have done this by modeling the grid and then using panel symbols.

You may want to set newel to rail like the rest. Then manually add posts where you need them. HTH.

I modeled the newel from the 2D cad file that the manufacturer is kind enough to have on their website. Then imported as a "millwork" symbol that can be added to the library and used in a system railing that is visible. But I like getting exacting results in a short time. Don't like to fuss too much. I detached a single segment for the railing and blocked "architectural block" which can be added to the library. So you need to unblock from library and then you drag past corners adding breaks at corners and insure snapping is getting you exact. I have attached the two parts in a library here. Glad you guys like it!

Such a cool looking cable rail I thought I would give it a go. My approach is a little different than those suggested. The railing system has a nautical feel to it, don't you think?

Not sure what you mean by this. Not changing can have its advantages. Works fine for me and always has. It seems to be the most universally supported format.
Interesting comment about Sketchup.
