I am going to upgrade laptop hard drive C to a 500 Gb SS drive in a few days as my current SS 120 GB is full. So while I have purchased X9 upgrade I have yet to download it. Given the X10 Beta release coming out today.. Is there a reason to download X9 other than the fact I paid for it? Given the space it will take up is there a reason I need it? Thanks

You need to open file in sketch up In order to edit it... Then save it but in an older version of SU to be sure it will open in chief.

Here I use my structural engineer to just stamp the structural elements ( that I use him to size ) and there is no issue with that at least for residential

For me Sketchup is just an extra tool. I personally don't make models or use it for much more than opening and editing sketch up models that I import into Chief but most often I don't need to edit them. Sometimes you import a model of a couch but it also has loveseat and chair and you want the pieces saved as individual pieces to use. It was bought out years ago by Google who really took it to another level and created 3d warehouse website ( I believe ) as a place for people to share models and manufacturers a place to be found. It since has been sold off but still is a great tool even as a free version. You can find tons of models for pretty much anything on 3d warehouse and I have downloaded several hundreds. You can then save them and import / copy and paste them into your chief model. some models import perfectly. Some have almost a photo overlay to give that model a realistic look that doesn't always work well when imported to chief. Also you may need to save the newer versions of models as I think there were problems importing sketchup vs 7 models or earlier???? I could be wrong on versions but know that and possibly save hassles. Most plumbing and appliance manufacturers and many others are found on there and growing.

Here's a few of a new home I am just finishing design on. Will have to study that tips on ray tracing video for better renderings but they get the job done for now.

Thanks Lew, I did look on the tech support page / forum and they noted that even if you ran it off the other hard drive the Chief data folder will still need to run on the C drive. This is where most of the data is and takes the memory anyway. So I have ordered a new Samsung 500GB SSD and will clone the drive. Hope that should hold me over for a while and hopefully speed things up as well. Thanks for all the replies and advice guys.

Thanks, I was researching that last night. When I bought the laptop I never thought it would be an issue not realizing how much space programs take up. I found Temporary files had about 16GB in it that I could clean up but even after that it seems to eat up space quickly when running ray trace. Doing some research I found I can clone the hard drive on a new larger SSD as you noted and hopefully not have to reload all the programs and settings etc.

Ok Back to same issue I have removed old versions X6,X7 and their data files etc I have removed everything I can think of off of the C drive. I'm only using X8. I saved data files etc to the D drive, Emptied trash, reduced / managed archive files to only 1 or 2.. the one labeled auto back up and one other. Eliminating all that had freed up 10-12GB or more and all I have done is downloaded some additional library content and done about 1-2 models. I haven't been using this laptop for anything else. It seems in no time flat I'm out of memory. Am I missing something? I have the plans on the much larger D drive. What is taking so much memory for the C drive ? Is their something I'm not aware of? I am thinking it best to download a version of X8 onto the larger drive and run it from there . I assume there is no issue with putting a version on the D drive get it running and then deleting the version on the C drive ??? I'm feeling kinda dumb on this. Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks for the replies. I'm doing a house that is similar to the one in the picture. I just found it doing a search for the detail but its not this plan. I did use a P line solid and added it in elevation form added the corbels and saved it as an object and re used it in other gables. I'm not using this as part of a construction document but simply as a design tool. I still use autocadd for those. I have X8 and will have to investigate the materials region method. Chopsaw thanks for the test . I see what you did and will keep that in mind. I do have some work yet to figure out the arched entry and a few other things. I don't use it every day so I'm a dummy by comparison to many.

Not sure if this photo will work. but wondering if there is a way to do this in Chief? The 4" bump out at peak? do I just have to make a polyline solid and paint it or is there another way ? [houzz=http://www.houzz.com/photos/52140/Shingle-Style-House-traditional-exterior-new-york]

I have a 120 GB SSD as my main C drive and it has filled up with programs and so forth. I have cleared it of all my personbal files and stuff I know I can move to the larger Hard drive. My question regards the Chief Programs. I have Chief X6, 7 & 8... I don't understand all the technical aspects of whats needed to be kept. Since I am using Chief 8. Is there any reason to keep 6 & 7 on the computer to open older files that seem to lose some stuff if I open in X8? At the very least can I delete or simply move the Chief Data files of the old programs for X6 & X7 ? Or does that make them not work by moving files it needs to access? The data files alone are about 16GB for X6/ X7 I don't think I can just move the old programs or even all 3 chiefs to the larger hard drive without deleting and reloading / installing ? Thanks for any input

Thanks I finally also found the video again on the room molding polyline. So that worked.

I am using a half wall / pony wall of stone and as usual would like to add a stone cap to it. While I wish Chief would add a cap dialogue box for this where it would allow you to check box for cap and allow you to selct a moulding profile I cant see that this is the case. I have had to add it as a 3d polyline or moulding attached to the exterior in past but I havent done it in a while . What are best ways to achieve this ? I tried adding a molding on the room and offsetting out but that doesn't work. I cant attach a molding on the wall covering using exterior. Once it is achieved is it possible to save that wall type with a cap as new wall type ? Thanks for any help.

I download them to a file folder not within Chief and then can copy and paste them into Chief. Having them in separate folder allows me to keep a free copy of Sketch up and open and edit some models. For instance you might find a furniture group you like but only want a couch not love seat or chair. I save as and make copies of each of the pieces separately. Then import / copy what I want into my plan. and if you want it for further projects save into your library. Depending on what version of chief you are using you might find importing some versions of models wont import. In general download later versions of sketchup models
