Sounds like a reference plan is the way to go.

    What troubles are you having?

if I place the single apartment reference multiple times and then move one of them, they all move along with it.    I would like control over each instance independently so I can line them up next to each other.

I could be wrong, but you could draw just one "apartment" plan.

    Walls, windows, doors etc.

Convert the sum total into a symbol.

Import the new symbol back to the primary plan.

Then it would be possible to duplicate that one apartment many times over, but as a symbol only.

It could be placed side by side with other "clones", in addition to being stacked on top of another module.

Not sure if that answers, but it's a plausible option rather than having to draw the same apartment umpteen times.

What's great about Chief however is that the build floor tool can repeat the floor below as each new level is created.

Thanks for the idea, but this would not would add another step.    I was hoping for a live change in the unit plan that would reflect right away in the floor plan.

Kind of unclear what trouble you are having.  I think "edit area" is what you are looking for but I can't be sure.  Can you be more specific?

I want to design a typical unit plan in one file and in another floor plan be able to clone the unit plan over and over again using a reference.

This is so if there are changes by the client it can be done once on the typical and automatically show up on the entire floor plan.

  4. I tried checking the forum, but no luck finding the answer!

My goal is to create a standard apartment design and then duplicate it throughout a floor plan with actual walls, windows, doors, and such. I initially considered using reference plans, but it's not working as expected.

Any suggestions on the best way to tackle this, or point me to a prior post that I may have missed?

    Thanks in Advance!

    Charles,

My other suggestion is to take a regular wall and tweak it to fit your needs - change the finishes on it, for example - then rename it as a new wall type and save it.  I have to admit, I'm with Ryan - I'm not being critical, but I'm curious to know why are you using a 3d solid to build a wall?

    Susan

Thanks Susan, that would be a solution but now it falls into my current workaround which it to use an invisible wall, attach the outlet and move it into place.

Regarding why I have a 3D solid rather than a chief wall.... this is an exterior poured concrete patio wall with thicknesses that vary in some areas ("think" funnel shaped transitions) and heights that do the same thing.    This cannot be done with chiefs walls, in my experience.

re the beach..... I know what you mean, but we also look at you in Colorado and think, wow it would be nice to be skiing ^_^.

I assume you're wanting the "Attached To" column in the schedule to report "Wall" instead of "Floor"?  If so, you can use a Custom Object Information Field along with a custom macro instead of the built in column.  You could also simply exclude any of those objects from the schedule.  If you need them for the quantity still though, you could add the appropriate quantity into a wall off to the side just as placeholders.

Thanks Michael, I will look into your solution and see if this is something that I can do.

  7. I have created a custom wall out of a 3d solid and want to place "wall mounted" outlets on it.

For it to show up in the electrical schedule as wall mounted it needs to be placed in a "wall", not a 3d solid.

Ultimately the question is.....How do you put a wall mounted outlet on a 3d solid (without using invisible fake walls) ?

Anyone have a work around for this?

    Thanks,

    Charles

Clearly someone who used to use Generic CADD. (Probably one of the best CAD programs of all time.)

OMG.... I have not heard that name in years!    It was the first CAD program I used prior to AchiCAD.   Thanks for the memory :D

Basically it's the ultimate Backlit Hotkey Keyboard.  It was designed for "Streamers" but it can automate almost anything you want to do.  I use it to automatically load the Hotkeys for whatever App is currently active.

For Chief I have hundreds of tools available with a maximum of 3 key strokes.  All the keys are assigned icons to indicate the tool.  There are only 32 keys but each of those can access 32 more and 32 more and ........

Take a look at some of the videos - you'll be amazed at the possibilities.  Each key can be assigned a variety of different actions and/or combinations of actions.

Joe..... I have to thank you once again :P ( I originally thought "stream deck" had to do with some programming code  )

I was skeptical at first and tried the "free version" using an iPhone.  It took very little time to make me a believer, so I bought the XL and love it!

We've already got a conversion now, but for reference and if anyone wants to change the background colour (or re-run for the next Chief release) there are a number of free / cheap batch image converters.

I use the XnConvert tool which is part of XnView MP (https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/) or can be obtained separately, both have Windows, Mac and Linux versions.  These are free for private use and very cheap for commercial use (sub 30 euros for the full XnView MP) and offer a lot of functionality.   I just did a quick test and after a quick setup for the conversion it did all the Chief button images in a under 3 seconds.

    Thanks for the link!

  11. Thanks everyone, great suggestions and I will try them all!!

@para-CADThanks for the dropbox link and all the icons.    @RenerabbittI appreciate your offer to do them for me, and I value your time, so its better that I learn to do it for myself.    I searched for an online generator, like your mentioned, but none, I could find are out there.

Question.... has anyone been able to draw the icons in a Chief cad detail and export them somehow?

  12. @solver, thanks for the reminder ;) I added my system info to my signature (but in case it doesnt show up...X-14, Windows 10, PC Dell Alienware Aurora R6, Desktop, 7th Generation Intel Core i7)

I am trying something new, doing my as builts in one drawing and referencing it in the renovation set which is why I would like to pull dimensions for a referenced drawing.

    Thanks,

    Charles
