  1. My first question is how are wall and roof layers managed in the the layer set list? For example, while in a full overview how I would I turn off just the siding? The only way I know how is use the Delete Surface tool. If I look at its layer properties I do not see away to control it's display other than rooms that has no effect.
  2. Awesome thanks! Awesome tool for a builder to put on a screen at a model home to explain how it blows away the competition Who needs realtors? I am reading in Terry Munson's book that another similar application would be using layer sets to turn on or off certain objects in multiple versions of the same view. I cannot seem to figure out what layer siding is assigned and how to turn it on and off? So I end using the delete surface tool.
  3. X2 Larry very helpful. Thank you! This method of using layers and layer sets (filters in other cads) is nothing new just the way CA designed it. Makes a head spin if you use several different ways of doing the same thing. How did you make the vid? That would be a great way to communicate on these forums. You opened the Objects DBX fast getting use to these hotkeys I can see can be a friend. The list says ctrl-e did you rearrange that on the key board somehow to a single key? I open the obects DBX all the time.
  4. If you are using a flat ceiling plane why would you expect to get different span values?
  5. 1. My understanding is it takes a conditioned room driven by frame spacing defaults to put batt insulation in exterior walls. The ML is showing it along with the rigid I defined in the wall type DBX, but when I look at the components of an exterior wall I do not see the batts? 2. Additionally, if I wanted batt insulation in an interior wall like adjacent to non-conditioned garage or for sound how to I get it to show in the ML and wall components too? 3. How do I add rigid insulation under my slab and to my roof layers?
  6. Joe, not sure what you are describing but the lower sill/SIP detail is a poorly sealed T&G shown in the attached. You can read my blog to learn more about the issues with the rest of the joints if you'd like. http://paramountbuilds.blogspot.com/ EDIT" Never mind see you found the issue, well on the PC anyway .
  7. Yep, interesting topic. People will leave windows open for long periods of time depending on the climate. The irony is how well the window surround dries is in part dependent on which way the vapor drive is. If you close it too soon and the relative humidity is higher in the bathroom than outside, drying does not occur in time(24-48 hrs on average or can be up to one week max), microbials will develop in the layers you cannot see with the naked eye that leach out to IAQ causing health issues they are proving. In high humidity locations (IE: 100% RH, 100+F) may want to close it faster. I have a window in an in a old house too above in a shower that is rotted, no vent...cold winters too cold to open the window. So as we build tighter homes (.5-3 ACH) growing very fast in USA that depend on HRV/ERV ventilation systems and as you pointed out "people. which is a big controversy with the required rates to include exhaust in ASHRA 62.4. It now becomes critical the jobs that WUFI and Joe pointed out. Getting a little off, just interesting stuff to me. To each their own. It's just a matter of time we need better software as green tight homes develop. The days of putting things together without a complete understanding as seen in 2015 IECC, ASHRAE 160, PHPPUS, will be gone in part due to the law suites that are already happening and Joe points to. We are going to need some good E&O as Designers/Engineers. I know ppl don't want to hear it or ignore them but search the net.
  8. LMAO! Good point my friend, good point! I'd take VA beach hurricanes over this any day of the week FEMA shelters are more expensive due to the flooding too. Nah, second thought I prefer the CA earthquakes, mud slides, wild fires, north heating bills, NW constant rain, high rel-estate $$, crowds, traffic, smog, ....Just saying!
  9. How well a window performs at preventing mold, mildew, fungi, bacteria, or one word that takes them all into account microbial's is dependent on the boundary conditions both internal and external, mold producing foods for microbial growth in the layers, heat, three different modes on water and vapor transportation, moisture contents, convective air flows, and other factors. In some climates opening a window for prolonged periods of time can make matters worse, as I said above. Some spores need no moisture "dry rot". Some such as International Society of IAQ have started to tear windows, basements, etc out to study the spore and bacteria growths and related health issues. It's pretty nasty! If interested read the reports on their site. My assembly satisfy's alot of the requirements so I'm not that concerned. It be nice if CA had an interface or GBXML export. Joe has an entertaining article on this I attached. Read it and the WUFI website, run the free ORNL, to begin to get a feel for hygrothermic micro and IAQ issues we have. I'm sure you will find that in most cases a window in a moist environment is not a good idea. As I said people love them or believe these myths so we designers/builders are stuck between a rock and hard spot selling point. I have the same issues here in US tornado alley that kills annually, people thinking they are safe in a basement with view and/or walk out windows, when in fact your best changes of surviving one is in a FEMA, Texas Tech tested, safe room. 10. Its a next gen flex home, a wing or suite in a home. The doors provide access to get to granny, teens, etc..Both homes share this common bath a bedroom. See attached. Moved the washer around I was wondering if that is restrictive too. It's just a small combo unit for the suite, you can see the main laundry in the plan. I just slapped some furniture in it to get SF and interior walls somewhat set, now I need to work on the details. Keep the plan reviews coming, anyone, I appreciate it! This is my first, only one way to learn in my book by doing, hanging on these forums around some pros
  11. See above, remind me what DWV issues do I have?
  12. Like this? I am just shy of 3' tub clearance, is that enough? Window 2' x 3'. I found some room in my suite living room, eliminated the cost of a 4th tray truss in the process. Yahoo!
  13. Excellent idea I have seen alot of rot in time at the side adjacent to the tub.
  14. Anyway, the interesting part is the standard we use to buy windows in the USA fails to take into account mold and the hygroscopic issues WUFi IDs. What a mess! Be nice if CA put up some red flags in the wall type/integrated fenestration's DBX. In time CA will need to get together since autocad/others are on the ball. http://www.aamanet.org/upload/file/CMB-5-08.pdf There is a green building GBXML IIRC CA needs to xport to these CFD files I cannot find. Free Sketch-up is used for zones and has the files, go figure! In other words, I cannot import my CA model to WUFI I have to recreate zones in goggle SU. CA also needs to import to BIMS, it is just a matter of time b4 competition eats CA for lunch Recent WUFI US/ PHPP_US had to pretty much rewrite the book due to all the layers/material interfaces we use AND most do not understand. Dont get me started on PHIUS cert cost a builder $5-10K for undefined nothing! http://www.phius.org/home-page I guess someone got the bright idea we are German capable and could make some $$ on it? The GC national training happens in certain states once a year and a HERs rating is not going to cut the mustard. Crap by the time we get it figured out and certified I and others will have it done. O, and I can submit at that point for $5K to get their worthless cert. The price we pay for bragging rights
  15. Interesting how we design crap in the US and clients could care less about all the recent hype , Sustainable this and that, blah, blah, blah.....when most people sell in less than 5 since they have a balloon or variable, since they got talked into more house than they can afford. The most accurate models are out of Germany with two decades of data back calibrated to WUFI. The only potential issue with it is ASHRAE 160 material mold data, accurate climate files, and user inputs......you really have to know what you are doing. I'm waiting for an answer from ASHREA now on when 160 will be fixed, they are saying early next year. ORNL has a limited WUFI_USA free version. PHPP_US, has been incorporated into WUFI Plus which cost ~ $2000 USD. I'm sure a window in a shower/tub would fail the dynamic Hygrothermal model. A static or manual J model that is not very accurate could careless and show a bad, good. I'm thinking people put about as much value on healthy buildings as sustainable in this day and age but, I think that will change in time. I'm taking it to the bank anyway
  16. Those glass bock showers are SEXY! I'll hire you Joey to show me how when I get there .....This is a baby boomer bathroom SOG for grandma's suite bathroom of the home. Not sure the glass doors compliment work in the MB since perhaps at that age they don't want to see each other taking showers? Eeeek! Glass blocks what R-5? Never going meet passive house standards which more codes are coming, like IECC. Someone needs to make a argon or krypton filled block hybrid with an window opening in the middle, U values in the low teens, variable SHGC. I have a toilet compartment in the MB did not know I need a fan there too. We in hillbilly KS are so far behind the US we just adopted IRC 2012 from IRC 2006 skipping a cycle and everyone is TOTALLY confused especially IBC. Hope it's a So CA thing. Common the door is only closed a while this is not commercial where employees take long breaks in the pooper reading the newspaper. Gaud, they need one in every stall in some.
  17. I'm thinking the same thing hassle opening and closing even using a awning is a safety hazard. If the weather is nice like CA less opening/closing ok. Are you suggesting drop the surround and go to tiling the same area in which case I can still have a tub/shower I need? Are you saying then I'd drop the window into the tiled area? It's still sitting over a tub perhaps partially buried in tile, and would require reaching but that may be a compromise other than water/mildew getting all over the window....I have that situation in a old house being rehabbed and the wood sill gets rotted perhaps solved by FG. I wonder if the window is worth it? I'd want it but who knows what ppl want. I'm trying to keep envelope penetrations to a min, not sure if they make a solar tube exhaust fan I'll search. Casement windows are good since the latch compression seals the air off. Think I'll model it up with FG window and tile around window so it looks pretty
  18. More of plan review question than CA. I can't decide if I should put a window above this tub. If I were making it fixed glass makes no sense since I would think people would want to reach up and open weather permitting? Person would need to be tall. Just wondering what your clients would prefer on average in a spec home? This in a energy efficient design so just another window I got to deal with but, on the other hand I want it to be appealing to the general public. Windows are my worse enemy but at the same time people love their windows. I'll have an exhaust fan I can point them to. I don't have any options for moving the walls or getting a different shape out of this bathroom to get the window in I can see anyway. I have another interior bath without a window so not sure how big a deal it is. What would you do?
  19. I agree, I do HVAC/Plumbing in CATIA with VERY advanced CAD/CAM software Chief is not and it is still a PITA! set my supports and it runs a auto-route that outputs material, end types, min distance between bends, etc.... I'd like to get some direction along with how long it took so I can try it? It is a good point since I seen others putting alot of effort like complex advanced surfacing roofs that would be time much better spent in software with those tools that is deigned to handle it. Sure we can take alot of time to force CA to but why? Time is $$.
  20. Care to give some more details on how you did that? I don't see spiral ducting in my bonus catalogs I just purchased CA few months ago.
  21. Works like a charm. I just used it to put some 3D ISO's on a PDF for some estimates. You the man!
  22. You got that right Joe. The “Assembly Design” workbench takes the 3D cuts and there is a really cool tool I drag along multiple assembled solids that shows me how the cut changes in 3D space through framing and systems DMUs. I can stop at anytime, take measurements, or take a 3D camera view and store it in a 3D “tree” along with other operations. In the camera views I use “3D drafting tools” called, “ Functional Dimensioning and Annotations” (FTA) that have minimum GD&T dims/annotations and, the entire model carries a general tolerance I specify. A lot of mfg is driven by specs or build paper/models, so the need for 2D drafting and annotations out of design is gone. Builders and inspectors can launch the 3D camera views on an phone app or PC. I’m thinking about using my toy hauler as a on-site data communication center. A code or engineering path would have to predetermined and discussed so this out in the future. It is the way we designed, built, and FAA certified the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. You all can feel safe now when you fly it you are in the hands of high tech 3D technologies Brian, check out Draftsite it's free.
  23. I’m ordered Terry’s books wish I had known few months ago when I started. Way I see it I need all the help I can get to get up to speed fast and his book previews look good. Thanks! It’s called Advanced Technology Assemble (ATA), Determinate Assembly (DA), Rapid Protoype (RP) or Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)… I believe CA has an export to (STL IIRC), I have been doing in aircraft/auto for 1.5 decades. RP has been replaced by FDM and is production capable these days, not a prototype model/tool anymore. I have designed to 3D FDM printers that are in full production now. It is not if, it is when, it comes to a job site near you; construction is already happening in some parts of the world as most technology follows aircraft. Also referred to as MBD (3D Model Based Definition) or DMU (Digital Mock-up Unit) that will require a BIMS interface. Be careful what you wish for, with less demand for drafting skills the 2D drafting skill demand will go down as it has in acft/auto over the past decade or so, equals job loss. Higher skills will be required, some requiring degrees in CAD/CAM technology and ANSI Y.14.5 complex GD&T (3D dimensions & tolerances using composite control frames) that is embedded in the 3D model in camera views. Instead of picking on a camera view to open a window, it zooms into a 3D view with GD&T, build notes, etc, that get turned on by auto-layers. That is the easy part, linking the GD&T to DA/ATA holes, datum’s, that are usually preassembled by closer tolerances this industry is not used to at the manufactures by 3D drilling and inspection methods using 3D Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM). At the job site, the build goes fast and furious, more accurate than this industry has ever seen before, once the remote tooling and CMMS issues are addressed as they are being worked on. I have talked to some builders already trying it that thought it is something new but, it’s old as dirt, and they did not know what they were talking about or getting into yet. I have plumbing MBDs out for review that are paperless. As soon as I figure out PHIUS/WUFI I’ll help pioneer it in this industry. Unfortunately, it will also eliminate some trade jobs I have seen that happen too. A lot of the above will apply to framing at first, systems later, the PE’s job will get easier and the loads will transfer better due to tighter assembly and installation tolerances. Basically, Perry has a lot of insight since the 3D world is going to accelerate and 2D will decelerate. AutoCAD is far behind the technology compared to others at this point in time do not get to use to it other than BIMs that CA is going to have to get on the band wagon to compete.
  24. Never mind I got it to work, started over. Thank you!
  25. I didn't think to look at the hot key list that says to tab or return to select the next object however when I do either in a room the room gets selected as the only other object. If I take the cabinet/sink outside a room and off the plan using tab or return only deselects the cabinet? Does this have anything to do with W10? Or my keyboard set up?
