  1. Hello All, This is a newbie question but I can't seem to figure it out. I am working on a project now that has a central room that has 12' ceilings and two side areas that have 8' ceilings. I've drawn the walls separating the rooms as 2"x6" interior walls. Problem is on the exterior. The roof on the side areas is 4' below the roof on the central area. Now the walls that separates the central room from the side rooms would be an interior wall below the side room roof but would be an exterior wall above the side room roof. In the elevations though the wall is shown as interior and has the interior finish instead of the siding. Does this make sense? I can't seem to figure this out and I did see a Youtube video that dealt with this quite awhile ago but can't seem to locate it now. Thanks for any help.
  2. Thanks everyone, Looks great.
  3. Thanks, I used that tool to curve the sides of the stairs. Can it also be used to curve the treads as well? I couldn't seem to figure that one out.
  4. Hello All, Is there a way to curve the treads as shown in the photo? I have everything else shown...just not the curved treads. Thanks
  5. Looks like they may have something there called "Kitchen Garden" but it's SSA only...didn't want to pay for a renewal as this is just volunteer work. Hoping there was an alternative.
  6. I tried the "Plant Chooser" but it comes up empty when I look for vegetable plants.
  7. Hello all, I have been tasked by a group who are planning a large community vegetable garden. I've been asked to show a rendering of the garden. I've been able to show everything so far, garden soil in rows, fencing and flowers, etc...but haven't been able to find any models of the actual garden plants...corn, tomato, potato, peppers, etc. Does anyone know of a resource for these plants? And the cheaper the better as this is a volunteer project. Thanks
  8. Is there a way to make a circular hole in the ceiling? My client would like a domed feature in the entryway ceiling but I can't seem to figure out a way to place a circular hole in the ceiling. Thanks
  9. I have a client who wants the top half of the stair railing to be a solid wall and the bottom half to be standard railing. Typically, I can do this with just a standard wall from the floor to the ceilng for the solid wall section then let the software take over the rest of the railing. But in this case the client wants the solid wall to start at the stairs and extend to the ceiling...this way they can keep underneath the stairs open for a small kitchenette. I am not sure how to do this, any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  10. Sweet, didn't even know that existed! Thanks, works great.
  11. Hello, most likely a noobie question but it has confounded me. I have a room in which the client wants a mixture of hardwood and tile flooring, basically it has four regions with different flooring. I did this by using the room divider tool. Problem is now the Entry room is now four different areas labeled as Entry with four different area sizes listed. Is there a way to show that this one room (with four sections) is actually one room and have the correct room dimensions showing? Thanks
  12. Michael, thank you...that was it. I must have been blind not to see that earlier..thanks again.
  13. As a self and Youtube taught CA user I am having trouble with a Cape Cod style home. I drew the main level then placed a 10/12 roof on that level. Then I added a second level which CA placed within what was the attic. Everything is fine so far....I think. Now, I am on the 2nd level and need to add a shed dormer. So, I need to edit the existing main level roof plane to get the dormer to work, but it is on the main level. I seem to remember a Chief Tutor youtube video that moved the roof planes from the first level to the second level without the planes actually moving in the real world so that they could be edited from the 2nd level. Am I making sense? I figure this is a rookie question, but it is bugging me. Maybe I haven't tackled a Cape Cod drawing the correct way. Anyway, any help will be appreciated.
  14. Didn't realize you could do that (I am self taught, so there is a lot I don't know). Found a tutorial on doing them manually on the Chiefarchitect.com site. Thanks fellows.
  15. Hello, I am working on a project that has three front gable dormers. There is one over the garage, and a nested dormer (one large one over the dining room and entry, then a smaller one over the dining room...these have one common side) Anyway, I have tried doing a full gable return on each gable but get a different result for each one. For the gable over the garage the full gable return works perfectly. For the dining room gable the full gable return doesn't work but a partial gable return appears on the right side of the gable (nothing at all on the left). For the gable over the entry, nothing at all appears. Has anyone experienced something like this? Is there a way to fix it? Thanks
  16. Thanks everyone, the contractor using the drawings to do up a quote was a little upset with me saying he now had to resubmit the window and door sizes to the manufacturer for a requote and how it would set him back a few days. I then asked him if he seriously thought the doors that were labeled 2668 were really 26" x 68" and not the industry standard 2'-6" x 6'-8". He then complained about the window sizes that show the width at 50, which he took as 50". I then asked him to look at the dimension less than 1/2" above the label which showed the window was 5' wide. Anyway, I am now manually changing the labels and will do a window schedule.
  17. The window and door labels show the feet and inches of the window or door size...example a window labeled as 5042SH is 5'-0" x 4'-2" single hung. Problem here is most window manufacturers and contractors in my area read label as 50"x 42" single hung. How can I change the label so that it lists the sizes in total inches instead of feet and inches? So this window would be labeled 6050SH instead of 5042SH.
  18. I am trying to draw a custom double sided free standing fireplace. The dimensions are 2'x5'. When I draw a box using interior walls 2'x5' the program then shows a room divider extending from one of the 2' walls straight up to the next wall of the house. I do not want the room divider line and do not know how to delete it. Why is it there and is there a way to remove it? I try deleting it and nothing happens. Thanks
  19. Thanks David, that worked out great.
  20. Hello all This should be an easy one but for the life of me I can't figure it out, should add I am a noobie so please go easy. I found a step by step instructional for drawing stairs with winders put there is one step that I can't get to work. The site says for step 3 "Next, create a second set of stairs with the bottom of the first tread snapping to the top of the last tread of the section created in step 2. Draw the number of treads to be the Winder section." OK, when I draw the second section it always snaps to the floor, not to the top of the first section of stair treads. I always start the second section at the point at the top of the first section when the cursor is a blue circle with a red box around it, at the middle of the top tread of the first set of stairs. How do I draw the section section so that it starts at the top of the first section, so that it is a continuation of the first section? Thanks for the help Malcolm
  21. Me again with a newbie question. I am used to Autocad and Revit when it comes to dimensioning. I find using the dimensions in Chief Architect quite difficult to impossible so I am assuming I am doing it wrong. My biggest pet peeve is when I am drawing and I pick a wall to verify it's location CA will then show some temp dimensions. These dimensions are invariably to the wrong walls or on the wrong side of the wall, etc. I invariably have to grab my calculator to add or subtract wall thicknesses, or add dimensions because the dimensions shown are to a different wall, etc. Is there a way to cycle through dimensions? Does this make any sense?
  22. I have a reno project where I have to draw the exiting roof system of the home. The client is adding an addition to the side of the home so we need to figure out the new roof lines. Anyway, the home is basically U shaped with the garage forming one end of the U and bedrooms the other. The inset of the "U" is the entrance. The roof is constructed of trusses with a raised heel and bottom chord overhang (the overhang is level with the top plate of the wall). The roof has a gable over the garage and bedroom "wings" but is hipped everywhere else. The roof slope over the "Wings" is 10/12 and over the main house is 6/12. When I set the roof properties to roof truss and then the height over the top plate to 14" for a raised heel then get Chief architect to build a roof it then ignores these properties all together. Is there a way to draw this roof without too much trouble? It's causing me (a newbie) fits. Thanks for any help.
  23. As a new user of Chief Architect I have a question about dimensioning elevations. I've used Revit before and liked how it automatically did the level dimensions in the elevations (Height of first floor, second floor, etc). That is all I want for dimensions in the elevations at this stage but when I click Auto Elevation Dimensions every thing that can be dimensioned is dimensioned. Is there an automatic way to callout the floor level heights or will I have to manually add them? Thanks
