  1. I have no Idea what the codes mean but it may not be all that complicated.

Check in  Preferences > Folders > All Program Paths: > Show > Preferences Folder.

Make sure that the drive letter and path are legit.   ie. that you have not renamed or changed the drive

Yours looks a little odd and maybe not default.   Mine is currently:        C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Chief Architect Inc

Pretty sure that ".ini " file gets rewritten every time you close the program so It is likely looking for a location it can not access.

  2. We have a stretch cad tool but what you are looking for is Edit Area.  Another tool you will find handy is temporary dimensions.  Select the item and then click the appropriate attached dimension or temporary dimension and change the measurement.  Or drag and tab for a dialog to enter the exact distance to move.

Don't be shy about letting us know what software you are coming from as there are a lot of others that have successfully made similar transitions. They can help you with terminology you will understand.   You can actually put some of that information in your signature along with your important computer specifications so it is available to those that are helping out.

  3. If I am following along correctly you should have a polyline so if you select the whole thing you can then double click the Make Parallel/Perpendicular tool and it will bring up a dialogue that allows you to "Rotate the entire Polyline"  but then if you are using the north arrow you may need to use Jasons method to keep everything in sync by selecting the arrow as well and rotating all.

  4. You first need to ask what software they are using and what import options they have.  Also what their role is in the project.....  Review and sign or provide a supplementary drawing etc.   Do they have Chief Architect and if so what version.

Start with a PDF if you need to start the conversation and break the ice so to speak.

  5. I have not fully explored X15 yet but definitely not in X14.  I usually find it easier to let chief do it's thing and then just do the manual edits rather than starting from scratch even if you delete most and then move one and multi copy etc..

  6. It would depend a lot on the type of sign you intend to display and If it is existing or proposed.   You can create a polyline solid representing a piece of plywood or sign board and apply a material to it but that would be the simplest scenario.  You  you will want to try to use the tools that  best represent the finished product so obviously plywood is not the right approach for a neon sign.

Yes, I believe so. You've got me worried, is that wrong? :D

I am not exactly sure which is technically correct but It sure would be easier to have the shoe plate over the lower rafters even with new construction.  Then again it is an "over frame" so it could be a situation where the roof sheathing remains in place on a remodel.  Maybe a production framer can weigh in here.

  8. You could always copy that round wall over to a blank plan and auto build there and just CTRL + ALT + V  back a forth until it looks good.

Depending on how many sections you use you may want to trim the overhang to get a smooth fascia.  It is just a (roof) polyline.

    06 Options

    • Enter the Segment Angle at Curved Wall, which is the angle for roof segments automatically generated to cover a curved wall. A smaller angle produces more roof planes. Note that in some instances, slightly smaller or larger values will be used instead of the specified angle.
  9. Draw the polyline solid in the view you would like to edit it in.    When you are referencing a video post the link and let us know what segment you are referring to.  Also be sure the video was produced in X8 or prior as some of the features have changed.    Most likely the footing for the chimney should be drawn in plan view.

EDIT: Okay I just stumbled onto something w/respect to roof overframing! In some instances you may need two enable overframing on _both_ the "under" _and_ the "over" planes.  When I first tested out the feature I only needed to do it for the "under", but just on a whim I tried doing it on the over and all of a sudden the shoe plate appeared!

I can't quite tell from the angle of the screen capture but did that give you a shoe plate that is over top of the lower rafters ?

For any roof, is ridge vent counted for roof overhang?

Yes.  You can deal with this pretty easily by just subtracting some length from each plane though with a custom macro.

It does not seem there is any access to overhang data to make a calculated subtraction of the exact overhang or even a percentage of It.  If that is true perhaps we should be requesting access to that ?

Because in my experience, when you have 2 properly joined roof planes generating a Ridge Cap at the peak, only one of them will report the Ridge Cap material.  They're not each reporting half.

How would chief decide which roof plane was going to report for the ridge cap ?   I have never seen what you are describing on a plane by plane basis.

However the material list will do a tally for you.

There is no way in Chief to place or count ridge vent.

If you have it selected it will report the ridge length as the OP is reporting.   But you are correct you would need to contrive a way to show ridge vents or use a library symbol.  ;)

Currently it is displayed as 8:12 and I want to show it outside the roof line and more of rise over run.

I typically label it in the opposite view above the roof line and have a series of triangular cad blocks that I keep in my library for that specific purpose.

Two planes meeting at a peak of 40' length gives component ridge length result of 20'. It would seem to be allotting half of the ridge length to each plane.

Could anyone confirm that or clarify? Thank you

Yes that is how it works and always good to verify as there are certain situations when it does not work. ;)

Anyone find a solution to the text problem? I just started having the same problem. Picture attached. The PDF on left was printed last night on home computer. PDF on right printed this morning on office computer. Both using the same settings in X14. I did download X15 Beta yesterday on the office computer, not sure if that affects anything in X14. It appears the Chief Blueprint text spacing is getting squeezed, both on the text and dimensions. I tried a different pdf writer and it fixed the problem, but it slower.

I would give that a try in X15 and see if you have the same issue.  If so please send it in.  There have been a few changes in the Chief Blueprint font in previous versions but not sure about X15 yet.

Maybe check the PDF file properties for embedded font information and compare them.

Hi, I am wondering if we have an onboard system for converting imported pdf drawings to 2D CAD lines in CA yet ?

    No

It would be good if did have one incorporated right into the native CA work environment.

    Yes

What other software are you using to assist you with this process ?

    https://cadsofttools.com/pdf-to-dwg-online/?sent=block

Just be careful what you convert online that you are not sharing any military secrets.  If you find you use it a lot, buy the stand alone software.
