  1. Hi Chiefs, I find myself loosing a lot of time working in section views. It seems like it always takes a super long time to do anything in section view. Even panning is a struggle. Is there some kind of graphics option that will make working in section view less time consuming? It seems like the computer is doing more processing than necessary . Thanks! AB
  2. Thank you for all the help guys, I think I am just going to keep one plan file just for the roof plan, and use a separate file for the elevation and 3d views. This really troubles me though, I feel that some eventually some of the information will not match up and something will be built wrong because of it. I find myself doing this sort of thing on a lot of projects, am I alone? DJP, you made a great point about the z values. I went through the elevations and entered as many of the correct z values as I could but then I got stuck when I hit a roof plane with breaks in it, having multiple "baselines" I assume the baseline refers to the lowest line away from the ridge, but how do you find the value of another baseline if it is at a different height? I really hope you are right about the 2d cad being off. It is becoming very frustrating working with the section view at this point, alot of the way the roof is represented in 2d does not match up to how it is drawn up in 3d and I find myself in a black hole of re-editing. Maybe I am just not comprehending the way the roof is supposed to be built to represent it in chief. Solver, when you say pull back the roof planes from the join and connect them, do you mean drag the lines over each other? Whenever I have tried to do that they revert back to some other state where they either dont connect at the base, or extend into the room below. Let me know what you think guys
  3. Thanks for the help guys. I made a mistake in my explanation. The join roof tool does not change the pitch, you guys are totally right about that. The problem is that it changes the plan display of the roof planes, they overlap and do not look very professional if I send them to a truss manufacturer or someone like that. For instance the plan you sent Mike (thank you) looks awesome in 3d but in the roof plan view the planes are over lapping. Is there a way for the roof to look like the PDF representation in the roof plan view and look tight in the 3d view as well?
  4. Hi Chiefs, I am working on this roof plan that seems pretty complicated to me, but I am almost done with it. I am trying to get it to match the roof plan ( see pdf ) and I pretty much have I think as far as the plan goes. When you open up the 3D view though, things are a little hinkie. For instance at some of the intersections of the roof planes you can see part of the roofs fascia board. I am not sure how to fix them without over lapping roof planes. I want to avoid using the join roof planes tool because it will throw off the pitches which I need to keep exact. If any one has any tips or tricks on how to heal up some of these roof join conditions or has any suggestions on how to go about fixing some of the more unsavory parts of my roof, I would really love to hear from you, any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! AB KRAWCYZK.plan Krawczyk Home Plan.pdf
  5. Update: Hatch wall is looking pretty good guys...
  6. Hi Chiefs, Is there a way to make walls display as halftone on a particular layer set? I have a roof plan and I want the layers beneath to display in gray, or without a fill, but I do not want it to affect other layer sets where the walls are supposed to be normal. Does anyone out there have any Ideas about what I could do?? The first attachment is what I am looking for and the second is what I have. Thank you for your help! AB Breckenridge Roof.pdf
  7. Hi Chiefs, I am working on this as built project, and I am having some trouble straightening out the room heights. I made a camera view called BASEMENT VIEW under 1st floor cameras so you can kind of see what is happening. You will see that there is a main room that is deeper than all the others. I need the room height to be uniform (like the picture attached) but when I go to edit the structure settings I get this error saying that the ceiling height is un-editable because the rooms above have variable heights. However when I checked the room specifications above they are all uniform, having the same floor and ceiling height. I am sure some of you CA vets will know whats going on in a second, but I am truly perplexed and disturbed. Please let me know what you think, thank you for the help! 9. Hi Chiefs, I am working on a schedule page on a project, and I want to display examples of the doors and windows on the layout page. I already have the 3D perspectives in my schedule but I want an elevation view of them. (see the example attached) I know when I am working on framing there is a tool where you can click on a wall and open it to see its framing and then send that to layout, is there anything similar with doors, or a is it usually done with elevation and cross sections? Thanks for the help! AB Breckenridge-Layout.pdf
  10. Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate the response. Ultimately DJP is right, it is ultimately going to be up to me, and naturally it will vary from project to project (it is difficult to have a prescribed layout for each kind of project. The jimmyp layout order is awesome. That is a great place for me to start, it seems the most needed information lives on those sheets, so I will set up my basic template to include thoise pages. Brown Tiger, I really like those layouts. I especially like how there has been space put aside for notes on the title block. This frees up a lot more room to display plan info which is crucial. I would definately use those in my personal projects, but it looks like we are going to stick with the CA demo template as out office standard. Thanks again for the help guys, I really do appreciate it a lot.
  11. Hi Chiefs, I am working for a construction company, and I want to put together some layout templates for a variety of project scenarios, namely: 1. Remodel Additions 2. Remodel in Existing Footprint 3.New Construction 4. Commercial 5. Commercial Tenant Improvement What I have done is opened the "Breckenridge Heights" layout files and deleted all of the project specific information so I just have the view names, and general presentation space outlined. There are 21 sheets included in the example, but I am sure I am not going to need this for every project. I am attaching what I have started so far below I was wondering if anyone out there has done anything similar to this, and what kind of sheets they generally include for each of these kinds of projects. 12. Thanks for the video DJP, that totally explained it! Cheers! AB
  13. Hi Chiefs, This may be a rookie question but I am having trouble finding an answer. I am trying to emulate the Breckenridge Heights sample project (see link below) in my general Layout Presentation. On all the details and elevations they have a small marker (circle with a filled blue arrow) indicating the name of that section or detail as referenced on other sheets. How do I get this symbol to show, or am I going to have to mess around and make a CAD block on everyone? Please let me know if you know! Thank you so much! 14. Thanks alot DJP, I got to a pretty good place with the auto framing. I am trying to do some of the tricky stuff now. I was wondering if you know a way to miter or flatten some of the automatically created framing members many of the wall framed 2x4's are slightly mitered, and I dont like it. Thanks again for the assistance! AB
  15. Rob, Are you talking about the information from the pictures being structurally unsound? This was a job done by a previous contractor, with a previous owner, previously. Im pretty sure I am just reporting what is there for the engineer so we can see what we can do. Editing manually right now in CA, getting the hang of it but as you can see it is quite the undertaking. Thank you for the insight, I will keep it in mind moving forward!
  16. Hi Chiefs, So I have this project, it is an as-built of a three story house. The top floor is unfinished and I was asked to make a framing plan for it. The good news is that I have some good photographs of what exists there (some are posted below), the bad news is I have very little experience working with the framing tools in CA and this one seems fairly complex. As you can see in the sideways picture (sorry) there is a dormer above this room. Now that I am looking at it I can see it is too wide a dormer, but I really need to know how to make the ceiling / floor framing populate for the area around the dormer. I thought I might make another floor level above the current top floor, and have the framing for that floor built. (Is ceiling framing even a thing in CA?) I would also appreciate some tips on how to approach the framing in general for this plan, if there are any glaring issues someone might notice from my pictures, and anything I can do to make this a little easier a process. Thanks so much! AB P.S. More pictures available upon request! BYRONE AS BUILT 2.zip
  17. Thanks guys, Glenn, I have both those files in my Hotkeys folder, but do you know the procedure for loading them in? I seem to have forgotten which project it was I had this problem in, but id like to know when the time comes. Is it a drag and drop deal, or am I going to have to navigate through my options and find a place to load them from. Im guessing the later. If you could let me in on that, it would be monumental. Thanks for helping Mr. Hall, I bet you know how to answer my question about loading too!
  18. Hi Chiefs, It looks like my personalized hotkeys got reset somehow. I have a list of them I printed up before they got erased. Is there a way I can retrieve them from the list or some other method I can use to get them back? Maybe they still exist in old plan files? Please let me know if there is a quick solution to my problem or if I should just bite the bullet and enter all the hot keys again by hand. Thanks so much!
  19. Glenn! That was it, thank you! I totally have the neat spacing now by making the horizontal span equal, and I managed to get a little tail extension going on too! You gave a very good explanation that was easy for me to understand, and for that you deserve commendation. I hereby commend you.
  20. Thanks for the pointers guys, this is really good info. Unfortunately when I go to unlock the truss envelope, I receive an error that tells me that the roof and the ceiling planes are too close together so it can not generate the truss for me. Does that mean that the truss is too short to edit? My specifications only call for a 2' tall truss so that may be an issue. I think I will be okay with what I have now, but it is good to know it can be done for future projects.
  21. Also, I was wondering if there is a way to extend the tail of the trusses if I wanted to support downward sloping part of the overhang that way. And if anyone knows what the minimum truss spacing for a Sloping Flat Truss made of 2x6 with a 20lb. snow load factor, which spans 40', that would be useful information as well Thanks again AB
  22. Hi Chiefs, I am working on this little commercial project, I need to make this sloping roof with standing metal seam over the top. I have made my truss, which you can see if you open elevation 1 of the plan, but I would really like to edit the webbing to make it more realistic. I would like every other member to be horizontal, as in a Howe configuration. Is there a way to change the configurations or the way they display in CA? Am I going to have to build my own (please no)? Let me know what you think, any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks AB N.A.G. PROPOSED 9-7-16.plan
  23. Update: made a 1/2" thick polyline solid to mask the exposed end, so I think I am off the hook for now, but I am still curious about why this is happening. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Here is the plan file folks. The problem is in the top right corner where the blue 6 1/2" plumb wall meets the glass wall for the shower. In the cameras under floor 2, there is a camera called bathroom view, that is probably the best way to see what I mean. For some reason the glass wall wants to cut into the plumb wall and cut it off. I want the wall to go just past the glass and show a finish. Whenever I drag the plumb wall forward it defaults back to its old position. Same when I try to drag the glass wall back. Could it be because the glass wall is a pony wall? I am going to try to fiddle with the room designation as suggested in the previous post. I am pretty stressed out because my boss wants this rendered and turned in by the end of the day! GORTON - PROPOSED - 7-8-16.plan
  25. Hi Chiefs, I am doing this small bathroom remodel project. In the rendering attached you can see that the edge of the interior wall next to the shower door has an unfinished edge, as does the 6" high walls I created to illustrate the layout of the bathroom. I know in Revit there is an option to wrap finishes around the edge. Is there such a setting in CA? I looked all over the wall dialogue box and did not see anything like it. If not is there another solution out there? I don't expect much for the 6" walls and their unfinished top, but I was hoping I could find a solution for the wall by the shower door, could it be the join condition between the 4" interior wall and the glass wall for the shower? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you! AB
