  1. Looking for a logo designer for my business. I have looked at others but the logos they do are too involved.  Looking for something simple and some one who understands construction documents and their look.

Dan has a Video on his method here in the CA Library......

That actually has some great ideas, however, with one of my boys in tow to use the laser tape, we can measure and draw an as-built of a 4000SF tenant space in less than an hour including sending the finished drawings to the client from the site

The time we waste now is hollering across a room with the info from the laser tape and if it is miss heard or entered wrong, we may have to fix when things do not line up later.

I am only trying to find a solution so the Laser Tape will enter the data to a LAPTOP, I know it works with the Ipads and phone.

I got a DISTO D2 yesterday and it works every other time we take a measurement and only for dimensions.  It absolutely will not work in dialog boxes for , doors, windows, etc..  I have a call into Technical support and if we can not fix, back in the box and back to Amazon.

As for Room Planner, great app for what it is intended for , but I believe that 80% of us on here it is not adequate for time and efficiency to get an as-built drawing.

Yep, i.m just saying it works great with room planner why not Chief.

Don't know, there is definitely a lack of communication software between the laptop and laser tapes.  My Bosch will connect to laptop, but not do a thing.  Room Planner worked great for as-builts on smaller stuff, but then I had to come home and import, etc.  With the laptop and a good template file, I can send a completed as-built drawing as soon as we are done measuring from the field.  We have been manually entering dimensions and that works great, but this should shave some more time off.  Definitely worth the $150 for the Disto D2, if not back to Amazon on Monday!!

I use Leica lasers with “some” success.

My son and I watched the video and looked at some docs.  It looks like you need to check one of the boxes for the program to either do a "return" or "tab".

Looks to me like that was the main issue you had.  I ordered one will report back on how well it works.

a few versions ago Chief changed that on purpose so the software will be faster, like I said in an earlier post.

apparently, and now I know, that only affects the live view.  With plot lines, color fill, it looks terrible in both layout, preview and pdf.

From CA Support a few minutes ago:

Our development team is currently aware of an issue in which colored Plot Line views that are sent over to a layout sheet may appear to have an offset of some sorts in certain situations. This appears to be the same behavior that you're experiencing within your attached files. I, unfortunately, don't have a timeframe on when this will be fixed, but if you send your views over to a layout using the "Live View" setting instead, or change your existing sent views to be "Live Views," you should no longer experience this problem.

Also, these types of issues NEVER occur at a good time, like I said earlier, the positive of this as a lot has been learned in this thread by me, which is always a plus

of course it isn't, do you use the print preview in the print DBX.

What you see in Layout should be exactly what gets printed.  This is how 99% of programs work.  But now I know...

Dan Bauman is a big proponent of taking laptops in the field

Any idea how to find Dan?  Surely someone does this.  I can't believe more Chief users do not field measure   The thing about your video is the "extra" step to tell the Leica "OK", that could get annoying and makes no sense.

By using Live View to Layout and the Chief PDF maker - This is how it turned out on mine.

BTW - GREAT JOB, That building is amazing..!

WOW, where were you yesterday.  That is absolutely not what it looks like in the layout, before you send to PDF which I obviously never did..  I believe somebody mentioned something about Chief fixed something when sent to PDF, but did not realize it required "Live View".

So that puts me at a 90% happy!!  Now, I have to apply what I have learned, (i.e. line weights on elevations can be adjusted by layer set, did not know that).

FYI DMDesigns:  Thanks for the compliment, I actually do not like the Home Goods Side, but I was given prototype drawings to go by that were not very clear.  I googled their storefront, each image I found was a very different elevation and not one close to the prototype. So, that was the result.

Thank you all heaps.  This has been a great education for me and have found several techniques I can use going forward!!

  9. I purchased Bosch GLM 100C and an Ipad and the room planner software several years back.  Works great as long as house is not too big.  I now just take the laptop to the site, which is much easier and much more efficient.

Has any one had success using any Bluetooth laser tape with Chief.  The bosch connects but will not do anything.  Bosch customer service does not understand my question and have not found good answers on Google.

Some people just don’t notice it or care enough.

I started on the board and did that for 15 years and I am very anal as to what finished drawings should look like hence I did not get more involved in Chief until I had more control.  I see construction drawings others do and sometimes with 40 years experience, I can not read them, same line weights, everything on one sheet, etc.

I did come off a little hard on Chief today, maybe a little unfair.  But when something goes wrong, it is usually a major issue to find a solution.  I no longer use ACAD, except for maybe making the p-lines for the signs on this.  I just finished a Planet Smoothie in Color and it looks awesome. I actually think Chief is easier to use (after alot of experience.)  So I need it to work!!!!!!

Its the SIZE of the structure/terrain that is doing this.   If you shrink down to the min size you need (maybe copy the file) you might see it work correctly.  Shrink the extra structure on the sides of the proposal along with the terrain and any objects far from the center.

Any idea on what the cut off is?  And do you know if it is building size or the amount of detail?

  12. I have been going through some house plans with this issue and have "checked" the "Edge Smoothing When Idle", that fixes it on those smaller files and it looks good.  Does not fix this file.....

Is everyone sure that it's not the automatic blurring Chief does on purpose to make your drawing experience faster but when you print it , it's crisp as heck.? I never have that problem.

The PDF looks just as bad.....

So are you still waiting for a reply from tech support or are you interested in the suggested workaround so you can print your plans ?

    I'm doing both..

I'm open to a workaround, but some of these bugs I run across really affect my schedule and product (and promises I make). Do I sound aggravated? The number of times I come across an issue and the amount of time it takes to resolve is starting to affect the bottom line. Right now, I'm hoping my client does not notice how crappy it looks as they want me to travel around the Northeast doing several shopping centers for them.  This was a test run.

I only use Live View or Color Fill for design development, never deliverables

Just played with Live View, not that great either, but a little better.  I just NEED my elevations in color that look like they do in the .plan file.
