    Hopefully this will help:

Thank you for taking the time to do this!  I ended up creating the extra surface on the plate by making a polyline solid and converting to a spline. It then became the round shape I needed.  Then created a copy of the new round polyline, sized it smaller, and created a hole in this copy. This copy, is now completely a hole. I placed it on top of the larger round polyline and then both on top of the plate.  3 components.  Not very efficient but it worked, and I will now try your method.  Thank you so much!

That is a rather delicate thing to do in Chief but the theory would be to have separate materials on the symbol such that they could be edited afterwards. You could carefully add a thin layer to an existing symbol or start from scratch and model your own components.

This is what I have been trying to do, adding a thin layer around the plate. but I can't edit the polyline , the part I want to make into a "donut" to sit on the rim, to become a circle. And the solid shaped poly cylinder can't have a hole cut out of it to become the donut.

  3. I am trying to take these materials, and add them onto a portion of an object.  For example, I want to decorate the rim of a plate with a design but leave the rest of the plate plain.  I have tried playing around with polylines and material regions and custom backsplashes, but none are really doing the right thing.  Any thoughts on that? Thank you.

Place all your images into a single folder and sub folders if you like.

    3D...Materials...Convert Textures To Materials.

Select a folder and Chief will convert all the textures in that folder ( and sub folders) to your library in one go.

It will also create the materials with the same folder heirachy as the original textures.

Oh wow, thank you! It worked!

Not that I am aware of. What you should do is to place the image files in the C:/My Documents/Chief Architect Premier X10 data/Textures. Then you use the Library Browser to, one at a time create a "New Material" for each texture file, naming it and importing it into the Library Browser. That is the only method I know of.

That's exactly what I did, thank you. I was just hoping I could somehow do it in bulk.

Please take a minute to fill out your signature (see mine for an example) by clicking on your user name at the top right of the page, click Account Settings, then Signature on the left.

This info helps others help you.

Your version of Chief (X9, X10) (Premier, Interiors) is the important info.

Make sure you turn on View Signatures too.

Are you changing the settings in your Template Plan?

I am trying to create a template plan, just realizing it even exists, and the defaults I set, still don't stick.

  7. Having trouble figuring out layer sets and defaults.  I want to have my camera view always on PBR but when I think I've set it as the default, it goes back to standard view the next time around.

I want to always have the sun setting at a certain angle, and other specifics for the camera view. But none of the settings stay.  Also want to always have lights at certain heights off the floor and at certain lumens.   Can anyone walk me thru the basic steps? Thanks.

  8. Thanks again everyone for your help.  I've learned a lot!  Here is another attempt, but still having issues with final pictures.  But some parts looks great. Here is a PBR and a RT and plan file.  If you can take a look and give me feedback on what's wrong.  The flooring should be light and in the RT it comes out dark, as does the desk.

Also, when I create a material (for the rug or the upholstery on the wood side chair) I cannot blend texture and color, else the whole thing takes on just one color.  I must be importing materials incorrectly or applying them wrong.  I design fabric, so it's important for me to be able to apply them.  Do I need to import the same fabric in different sizes to accommodate different size rugs, in order to keep the proportions right? Thank you!

  9. Do you bother much with resolution quality when you RT? In order to save rendering time, I usually RT at a smaller size, not active window size. And I have played around with low to high resolution.  Thoughts on that?

Graham's settings work pretty well ( as expected ) , I made a few small changes for my view but found the Couches were using an image of a fireplace front with flames for the materials in the 1st RT , so I made a few other changes and reshot it. It actually looks good in PBR too ...see saved camera plan below.

I'm curious how was the couch using a fireplace image?

Kirk linked you to the KB Tutorial this morning about that , post no# 8? approx.....  it's in the Material Definition on the Textures tab, I mentioned that in post no#3

I looked at all that.  I am not able to add bump maps.

Here's a Ray Trace with the settings as outlined below. Ran 30 passes, 19 min.

    Changes

    Sun Intensity = 1,000 Lux, Changed direction = Tilt -32, Direction 258.6

    3D Lights = 100 lumen, height off of floor = 55"

Two Floor Lamps = 400 lumen

Auto Built Roof, Foundation with Floor

Added Bump Map to Floor (just used texture file) and changed to Polished

    Environment Lighting = Off

    Photon Mapping = On

    Direct Sun =50

    Ambient Occlusion = min 0, Max 1.5

    Image Properties = 50,40,25,51,48,75,40

How do I add bump map to floor? That is one of my original questions....that I don't know how to get or use bump maps.

You have Added 3D lights in the Plan , they are no Cans (Potlights) in the Plan but they are pretty bright...... try 500 lumens

If you have turned them all off that is about what I would expect to see  as it is lit from the Windows only....

Oh of course!  I was confusing 3d plan lights and can lights. Thanks.

some things to note. turn down your bump maps, they are way too strong. don't be afraid to crank up your roughness, everything is shiny..especially in PBR.

    Careful with hard lights.

here is an instant pbr with some material changes:

What do you mean turn down bump maps? Where/how do I adjust them up or down?

I used PBR and adjusted the lights (cans are Off) to 100. I didn't have some of your textures, like the rugs, red sofa, etc. But, this should give you an idea

Here is PBR, lights adjusted to 100 and cans off.  Why does it look like this?

    Do a File>Backup Entire Plan

it will create a Zip file with all the Textures and the plan in it that you can attach instead since it looks like you have Custom textures....

I don't back up my own files. I have a service do that.  If I try and do what you've suggested, it zips up way too many files, not just this the one associated with this plan.

  17. Yes light cans in the room with the red sofa.

I don't normally build a roof and foundation when I am just doing the interior.  Should I?

The floor material def dialogue box doesn't allow me to change the roughness.

    What is PBR?

    Thank you!!
