  1. Barry,

Set it up in the defaults dbx - the little wrench icon at the top of the page - go to foundation etc.

Also check the 'floor' section of the same defaults dbx and set up your 'structure' there to have a mono slab (or whatever). Pretty confusing for me as well and hopefully I got the advice correct for you.

I re-read your post and I think you have to set up the 4" concrete 'floor' in the floor dbx and the 4" slab in the foundation dbx then your defaults should match?

  2. Very quick re-draws on my system but my system is pretty quick.

Plan looks very simple but I remember other posts about some objects with a LOT of surfaces and that would increase redraw times a lot but the only thing I see that might meet that standard are the balusters. Maybe try and change them to a simpler design? Not much help I'm afraid so must be something system specific.

Maybe the Gazebo? Again not much help here - good luck.

  3. This is the way I usually did it in Revit.

    4.  What I've found to be the most effective for me personally is to use polylines to "mask" the elevations as necessary.  Choose a solid fill set to Match Background and whatver line style and thickness you like (including the "clear" line option).  You can break lines, reshape, create polyline unions, etc. to cover whatever you don't want showing up in the view.  This way your view stays completely "live" and you have very little fear of anything getting messed up when you refresh a view.

My preferred method now as well.

  4. ...and at 11" it leaves a really strange artifact in the doorway. So sorry I didn't mention it's an X5 file (client must have in X5 format) but if you're seeing it in X6 then maybe you're right about the bug. I can massage it enough for the client who needs it now so thanks again for taking the time.

  5. Curve the walls then Auto Build the roof. Or...if you want to try and save the straight walls (not sure how or why this would work) you can auto build the roof over another curved wall and move the roof planes over your straight walls. This will create a LOT of problems but might be doable.

  6. I share with a client on Google Drive and allow them to delete files with no harm to either my system or his.

When he deletes files it lets me know the file is on their computer or it's now time to upload a newer version as our relationship is one where I'm constantly updating and changing for his approval. I don't know the nature of your relationship but maybe it's not a problem that needs fixing?

  7. Curt,

Thanks for the reply. It's much more simple. I have a floor plan and want to turn on roof planes. I go to the Layer dbx, click the display check mark, go back to the plans and roofs aren't showing. Go back to the dbx check mark is not there click again, roof planes show. Has happened 6 or 8 times but can't replicate the scenario. It's like I'm not clicking the right spot or mis-clicked but after a couple 3 times I'm sure it's been clicked just hiccupping a bit.

Plan sepcific? Maybe but again impossible to reproduce consistently.

  8. Thanks Doug,

I do have an off-site back-up set-up and cannot replicate any specific scenario and repeat the problem as you suggest. It's random and at first I thought I had changed a setting or something but it has happened more than once now so I'm just very cautious from now on. Can't say where the problem is and mainly posted to warn others to take care and to see if anyone else had experieinced the problem.

  9. ...just happened again when I closed a plan I was NOT asked if I want to save changes and those changes were lost. Not sure if anyone else has seen this but it's cntrl 'S' from now on before saving. Used to trust Chief with every close but not anymore.

  10. Larry:

that can be done via a layerset

no need for a new anno-set

    unless the presentation defaults change

or 1:1 is "convenient" for you

    Lew

As I've said multiple times I use the method I use because I learned it that way and find it way more than "convenient" to keep using the system that creates my livelihood.

As I understand your position Lew you do not use Anno Sets but are merely trying to understand how they are used? If that's true then I suggest you create a hundred plan sets then share your methods with us on the forum so we can learn another approach. It might be a solution but for me it's a solution looking for a problem I don't have.

It's very easy to suggest to a seasoned user to change their methods but a much different thing when those methods are ingrained and are used to create real world plan sets.

As an example your suggestion that I might use a Layer Set instead of a new Anno Set might work - for you - or many others, but for me to learn and then re-learn the fundamentals of what makes Chief work for me is a pretty silly proposition when the benefits are so small - again for me and the way I work.

What would I gain? - really - What would I gain? I'd spend hours re-setting up all my templates and Anno Sets and re-training my brain to look at Chief through completely new eyes and to what end? It wouldn't really be any easier, or it might be over many months of re-learning 'my' system.

On the other hand if Chief decides to change the way Anno Sets works then I'll adapt as I always have. Till then I'll use my existing system as there's simply no downside and no real 'problem' that needs fixing - again for me and the way I work.

  11. The reason that I make a new Anno set for "Rain Gutter Plan" is so that when I send the rain gutter plan to layout I know that my rain gutter notes are going to be on that drawing in layout and I will not have a stray arrow pointing to a downspout show up on my electrical plan or site plan or hvac plan or....

    This

  12. Larry, I like your approach. It makes sense and provides consistency from plan to plan.

Regarding Lew's statement of many anno-sets using the same layerset - has this ever been an issue for you? My first reaction is that to avoid surprises if a layerset was changed that I would always want a one-to-one relationship between an anno-set and a layerset, rather than a many-to-one. It would mean more layersets, but I don't think this is a big issue for CA. I'm trying to think of what problems would arise with the 1:1 approach but they haven't occurred to me yet.

    Thanks.

Takes time to set up correctly and am constantly tweaking but once set up it's very consistent as you suggest.

I use a modified Save As Method as well, meaning I will save my latest plan every so often to preserve the Anno Sets and then apply that as a default template for new plans. It keeps the latest changes and current thinking re: Anno sets up to date.

And like you Barton I have found no issues with a 1:1 ratio of Anno to Layer Sets and I prefer it to avoid confusion for my fragile little brain. When I'm in the Framing Ceiling Anno Set I really only want one Layer Set to match and having a Layer Set for each Anno Set is not confusing at all.

If you can find an approach that works then the creation each new Anno Set and its associated Layer Set becomes very easy to set up and if you save that plan for future use every change has been preserved.

I still come up against an Anno Set that needs tweaking like arrows in a set that I seldom use will point to a layer that's very obscure but it's a simple fix and another save preserves that for the future so the change doesn't have to be made again.

  13.

...is it also possible to have many anno-sets be set to use the same layerset

     Yes

Also Lew please remember I learned to use Anno Set when X3 first came out and there was a massive discussion on the best method(s). I adopted what we (the forum and the beta team) considered the best method then. Things have changed and I have not so I bet there many other methods that are much better or equally as good.

  14. Mostly it's just habit and easy for me to remember but if i do a raingutter set of plans I would like all the 'defaults' to be set what I choose to set them. Text, Callouts, Arrows, Dimensions, and the raingutters themselves. I might be able to use just a Layer Set but I don't understand that method and this is so easy for me to remember and all my settings will be consistent through all future plans as well.

Lew, A Framing Ceiling Anno Set is mostly controlled by the Layer Set (Joe's point above perhaps?) and I just find it easier to have the Anno Set control the Layer Set and the differences would be (obvious once you delve in) that a ceiling framing set shows the ceiling framing and the roofing set shows the roofing framing etc. each along with its annotation text set to separate layer etc.

  15.  I've named and cutomized around 20 different Anno Sets

    Larry:

    I'm trying to learn

    can you share your 20 anno-sets ???

    Lew

Tried to take a screen shot of the drop down box but can't figure that out.

I use 7 or 8 on every plan and create them as I need them for special sets and construction techniques. I have new plan where the homeowner wants a raingutter plan, I'll create a new Anno Set for that one.

    As follows;

    Anno As Built Set

    Anno Demo Set

    Anno Detail Set

    Anno Elelctrical Set

    Anno Elevation Set

    Anno Foundation Set

    Anno Framing Floor Set

    Anno Framing Ceiling Set

    Anno Patio Cover Set

    Anno Roof Framing Set

    Anno Framing Set

    Anno Framing Steel Set

    Anno Plot Plan BMP's Set

    Anno Plot Plan Elevation Set

    Anno Plot Plan Set
