Has anyone done a reset of their Windows PC?
vikiw_bend replied to vikiw_bend's topic in General Q & A
Eric, when you say rename the file, you mean the online authorization file, yes? -
I've been getting a Critical Error message and can't resolve it. I have full permissions, I can get to the file in question, but then what? Windows has been acting weird. So I wonder if doing a reset would be a good idea? Reset keeps your data files but removes programs. Does anyone know if it saves your .exe files, or does it delete those too? Anyone have a good solution for this Critical Error? The knowledge base didn't help enough. Criticall Error message details.psd

Our current Hardie library does not have the Architectural Collection products. Will whoever does such stuff please request an update from them? I'm eager to use some of these new Hardie materials

DH7777, it seems that most of the Chief expert users that I know of are now using the 4090. If that helps.

Hey Joe - what went wrong with the X14 plans you brought in to X15? I brought a couple plans in but haven't checked them out thoroughly. Were the problems obvious?
-
Perry, if we ever meet in person, I'll buy you a beer!
-
Perry! That worked!!! Thanks. Even Chief hadn't thought of that yet. You are awesome!
-
Hi Rob, It's been a while, hasn't it? I think I will try Perry's suggestion first before I open up the case. CA support and I are still trying various things, too. So far, nothing has made a difference.

I am running the latest update of X15, build 25.2.0.5.3, Windows 64 bit. The Nvidia driver is 535.98. Searching online, I learned that many people are having flickering issues with that driver, which was actually just released late last month. Just yesterday Nvidia put out a bug fix, 536.09. I downloaded and installed it, but it didn't fix the dashed line issue. I also went backwards to 531.41, that didn't help either. I tried unplugging each of my monitors in turn and trying Chief again, that had no effect.

HI Rene, Tech Support and I have been exchanging thoughts and questions and trying different things. The problem does not come up on their computer. So far, no solution. I hope they find an answer. That card cost a chunk of change! I also have a hard time believing such a quality card could be defective, but it's possible, no?
-
Also, in Chief, when you do something like export a .jpg of a plan view with lines that are supposed to be dashed, they come out just straight lines.
-
Yes, I updated the driver. In Chief, dashed lines aren't showing up dashed unless you zoom in, both in plans and in layouts. In general, while I'm typing text some of the letters momentarily disappear as though I haven't typed them, then they come back. There have been flickering issues with this driver, so I downloaded the bug fix that was released yesterday, but it didn't help, so I went back. I also rolled back to a previous driver version, that didn't help either. That's why I'm thinking something might be wrong with the card itself.

It looks like I may have to upgrade my video card. I have an RTX3080 but it's acting weird. Moving up to the RTX4070 seems the logical choice, but which version? Any advice out there?

Oops. Apparently it won't load into X15. It loaded fine into X14.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing, Ryan.

Where do you store your created wall types?
vikiw_bend replied to vikiw_bend's topic in General Q & A
That's also what I have been doing. I was wondering if anybody stored theirs in their user library, and if so, what do they see as the advantage of so doing? -
I have always added my created wall types to the list of wall type definitions, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be preferable to store them in my user library. Where do you put yours? What is most convenient to use and to import into a new template?
-
For what purpose do any of you use Floor Plan Shell layer set? I have a simplified floor plan layer set called Presentation, and it seems similar to FPS. Any other uses?
-
Hi Rene, I have your template and have looked at this, but how do you set up the macros for the totals and percentage calculations? I'm just starting to learn about macros. I draw polylines around all the areas, that's easy enough. But what about combining two areas, such as a front and a back porch, for the schedule? Would I have to join the two polyline areas into one?

I created this Excel spreadsheet for the building area summary on my plans. I put in the correct numbers, print as a PDF and insert into the layout. Any changes, and I have to re-do the process. Does anyone have a way to create a similar table in CA, with the math functions, so I can make edits within the CA file? Building Area Table worksheet.pdf

5k vs 4k vs 2.5k Screen resolution for Chief work
vikiw_bend replied to rgardner's topic in General Q & A
That's exactly what I was wondering. Right now my main monitor is an older 27" BenQ, plus an even older HP second monoitor. I plan to buy another 27" BenQ and use the current one as my second monitor. From what you are saying, I think I'll pass on 4K -
I'm interested. What's the difference between standard and pro? Is there a trial period to check it out before committing? I'd like to compare it with the template I've spent dozens of hours on.

Thanks bdillard1! Good advice.

I appreciate all the input, folks, although some of the computer tech is floating right over my head. My desktop is five years old, maybe it's time to buy a new computer that already has the 3080 in it. I haven't even checked to see if the RTX3080 will fit. My current desktop was locally built, and I like to support local, but I wonder if the small local shops have any better access to top-end GPUs than an individual would. I haven't looked hard at the A series, and since CA recommends the RTX 30 series, that's probably what I'll stick with. Funny - when I had this desktop built, I thought it would be my last computer until retirement. Hahahaha. Both about the computer and about retirement.

ericepv, are you doing Ray Trace Rendering? I want to start doing that.
