  1. hey guys, this happens from time to time. i complete the exterior of the home, find a wall dimension that's off, delete the deck/porch, then i adjust the walls accordingly. when i go back to redraw my railing for my deck/porch it doesn't bring in the deck framing or boards. see attached files. thanks!

in cad drawings i know there is a reload command that updates any movements to suit the rest of the drawing. does chief have this because it appears it trys to remember what was there before. before i even have a chance to name it a porch, patio or whatnot, it goes back to what i had it named before. in this case it was existing front porch.

I've done several over the last few years. Like Chris, I usually do the pole barn structure with infill framing for the walls. I would question the builder if he is using metal girts; that is not the way to go in my opinion. You don't need them if you have infill framing. One watch out if you do the 2-story. If your pole barn trusses have the brace coming down from the bottom truss cord to the inside of the post at the truss-post junction, you will have to be creative how you hide that on the 2nd floor. They seem to never fall inside a wall line or a closet. In addition, the head clearance on the 2nd floor is really low at the exterior wall when you are only using a 16' side wall - been there, done that. You may have to lower your windows just to fit them in under the ceiling.

Im learning when to say no and not take on these type projects. This may be one of them. Lol

Some people here are building them just like a pole barn, then studding the walls in between the poles with 2x4s. I think they're crazy.

Ive done several pole barns too. Lol im ready for a normal house on slab design again.

  4. My newest client is wanting plans for a metal building home. Im not sure what the craze is about because i got another possible client wanting a two story metal building home. Im a little hesitant on how interior wood stud walls will tie into a building like this but to begin, what exterior wall type would you guys start with concerning the attachment. (Example shown)

This job will be interesting. They hired a contractor who will provide their own plans JUST for the exterior four walls and the slab. I will come in and layout all the interior work. Im thinking theirs will consist of metal studs and such.

Are you possibly thinking of a Wall (Framing) Detail ? 1213250252_OpenWallDetail.JPG.7131c9f23857ad03d971b14ce57513d1.JPG

that makes you draw everything manually correct? here is what i was trying to do since i already built the framing. elevations showing this. (perspective framing overview shown in attachment) i need elevations to dimension.

  7. guys, i forgot how to cut a wall elevation that will show only the framing. if i manipulate layers in the section view layer set i will still need the defaulted layers showing windows and sheetrock in other views. hmmmmm

Attached zip with my current hotkeys. They are always evolving so I keep a spreadsheet with the current list (also included).

I have a Windows keyboard shortcut to that sheet for the times I forget.

I haven't updated the second two sheets in a while so don't count on them, left them for reference, the first sheet should be accurate. I used the other two sheets when I first set the keys up to help and printed the color one out for reference.

I'm right handed and try to set the most common keys to be one handed with left hand and to keep things in some grouping I could remember. I now use two keyboards, one in front one on left, which has allowed me to begin to add some other one handed combos that I avoided (work in progress).

You can either use this for reference or give it a try but everyone's brain works differently. I think there are few sets of hotkeys in either tips or symbols section.

I'd suggest that before setting up new keys you export the default OOB keys. Then every now and then export your own keys just in case you  need them on a another machine of for migration or disasters.

    Thanks! Appreciate it

  10. I have a client who is wanting to build a post and beam style home. Can anyone suggest a starting point on designing this in chief? I'm thinking the wall commands will be quite different. I do not know the specifics yet on the wall construction.
