  1. I am away from my desk so I am attaching sketches on post its. Is it common practice AND why does chief default to dimensioning slabs with brick ledges as shown? (Outer edge of exterior stud) Wouldn't the overall dimension including the brick ledges be correct? I have to manually add the 5" ledge dims just so you know.

    I use auto exterior dims.

I've used CA for years and AutoCAD since 1985. (Yeah I'm old).

In Florida we do a lot of Block house plans. (CMU) 8x16x8 concrete blocks.

Other than manually placing block patterns. Does anyone have an easy way to do wall fill patterns to show the ACTUAL CMU BLOCK Pattern in plan view.

It would be great if it actually placed filled cells required for all window/door openings and corners. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Ray

I asked this same question recently and apparently there isn't a way. I was asking for wall sections. What you may can do is insert a cad block from the library, explode it and use what you need. Thats what i did and it worked great.

Your question is super confusing then.  Why the following reference?

Your thread title made it sound like you were talking about the view title itself and then you said the above thing about "north" and multiple "directions", and then you circled the whole entire thing which included another object entirely (the callout), and then you you called the auto generated label a "callout".  To get some better assistance, I would highly recommend you try to A; clarify things a little better, and B; use Chief's terminology whenever you possibly can.  When I start to describe to someone how to achieve any given task or ask a question of my own, I will pretty commonly open look back at Chief and double check what their exact terminology is just so I don't confuse matters.  Anyway, just to clarify, this is a Layout Box Label...

    This is a Callout...

There is no default callout that gets generated when sending to layout.  Only a Default Label  As Chop already mentioned, you have to place the callout and title yourself.  Most people just create a CAD Block like Chop did, position it accordingly and modify as necessary for any given view.  The macros he used are some pretty standard built in macros that are very simple to use and that reference information placed by the user (you) into the layout page information fields...

...and the compass rose is really quite easy to create with our various CAD tools.  Sorry, it's not the most in-depth and I kinda raced through a few things, but here's a quick custom tutorial video and custom "Compass Rose" CAD Block on the house.  Merry Christmas...

i have spent the last several nights practicing cad work in CA. it's fairly simple. I guess i was figuring chief was way more advanced enough to cut down on manual drafting details but i get it now. cool......i just may can cancel my subscription to autocad for all my details i normally draw in it. i'm honored to have had my compass rose used as a demo, lol.

  4. Alaskan, they have the north symbols in the library but i didnt see one with N,S,E,W. My questions are definitely getting answered tho because im finding out by these replies that some things will just have to be drawn manually. Good info

Are you talking about the compass rose or the view title or the callout, or...?

view title/callout. as you know, the default callout thats gets generated when sent to layout is something like "electrical plan view", "floorplan view" etc.

  6. Guys, what should i input in the search for these? Im having no luck. Surely these can be generated by chief? As always thanks. I know where the north icons are but do we have this exact type showing all directions?

    Hey Rob.

I had a few minutes during lunch today to have a look.

If you tried a hip roof to match the existing house (on the rear of the kennel), It may harmonize a bit more with the existing dwelling, rather than having a really wide, low pitch hip on the back.  The center section to bridge the gap between both old and new can be 3-1/2 in 12 - which is perfectly fine for shingles.

Either way, good luck with your project.

    All the best. Val

Thanks! I originally had the ridge running east and west like u have but the client wanted it ran opposite. Good suggestions tho everyone.

  8. i'm not extremely happy with it but i'm going with the jogs in the roof line. when i cut my wall sections this is when autocad comes into play and i can manipulate a cleaner view. it is what it is and what the client wants. a good builder will make this perfect. i'm not settling, i'm a perfectionist but you gotta know when to move on and get the plans done.

is it possible to trim the blue with the black? this accomplishes a clean roof plan and it also prevents the existing roof from coming down into the new addition. thats what i meant when i said it gets nasty. from the top of looks good. from the underside not so much.

i understand what you are getting across. but i can't remove anything from the existing roof. i can jog it in way of what i have circled green but i doubt they will reframe it as clean as you made it.

im just wondering if the right circle will hold water too. hmmmmm

  11. The client called today and wants the rear of the addition a hip. It was a gable. The green doesnt represent the roof, just overall addition. I broke the lines on the new roof planes and it looked good from above but once u cut a section the existing roof looks horrible. Pretty sure they wont remove any of the existing roof to tie all this in.

  12. oh boy, i'm pretty good with roof planes but this one has got me. attached is the plan file for an addition to a home used as a veterinarian. the existing home has 8:12 pitch. the rear addition will be a hip of 4:12 and i have to make this work. it creates a nasty roof plan no matter what. i have to think realistically and know that the existing roof will be covered by the new addition roof. if i'm not clear just let me know. anyone wanna take a shot at this? it's horrible. the pic shows the rear of the home that attaches to the addition. chimney will be removed once project has started. thanks guys.

also, what makes it even more fun is the new addition will be 9' drop ceilings. the existing home is 8' drywall ceilings so im catching hell all around. haha

  13. For the people like myself who are self taught and fairly new to the software it takes time to get to the point where you are comfortable giving back and make sure you are giving the right information. When u see a post from me you can be assured i have done my homework and searched CA for videos and other files. Sometimes people on the forum say just the right thing that is alot clearer than what on search or videos. I come here as a last resort. There are times i dont even know what to type in the search line because i dont know the right words to hit the subject, then I come here.

The "Poles" are applied via the Railing wall Dialog box once put into your plan, you specify the "Newels" to be "round" and there is an input box for their diameter. Then on the "Rails" tab of that same dialog, you can assign "Round" top and bottom "rails" to complete the construct.

solved.......i get it now.....never thought of doing it this way. thanks david & joey.
