  1. My opinion is that anyone who has a CA license has an inherent value more so than one who does not. Therefore, even with minimal skills they should be able to find a niche to be of service to a customer who might find others out of their price range. It is just a matter of making the connection. I am willing to work twice as many hours as most on this forum, for half the price...free market principles, yes? I wouldn't do a ton of this, but just a few gigs to keep busy and further hone my skills.

  2. Mtldesigns Thanks...just a newbie but I love a good challenge. I have tried the CA renderer. I like the end result but some prefer the crispness of non-rendered. Plus you don’t have to wait all day for the end result.whatever the customer wants.

  3. JavaTom...I am semi-retired. I invented the world’s first vegan egg yolk (www.thevegg.com) and sold the company. I am doing this for artistic satisfaction, keeping busy and supplementing my income, I only invested 5k in the software and a desktop computer so no danger of going broke.

  4. I would like some feedback on obtaining work while I am learning CA. I currently have an architect friend who sends me a job or two every few months but that does not keep me busy. I usually complete a job in a week and charge $150-300. Is that too little? I currently only do the exterior, no interior. Just an image so buyers and builders can bett visualize the structure in 3D.

I need to make a little money over and above these jobs as supplemental income. Taking it to an absurd extreme to better explain my question...

someone says ‘i’ll give you $50 if you send me a nice rendering of a room with some antique furniture in it.” Or, “I’ll give you $100 to do a first floor 3D layout.”

Attached are the three jobs I have done in CA so far.

    Thanks and Happy New Year.

  5. The grass is a 3D model. A material is a lot faster but doesn't look good.

Possibly, once an export view is determined one could turn off all layers but the terrain and make a material out of the 3D grass model and apply it to the terrain. I think I'll try that.

  6. How about this technique?

    1. Copy house to new file.

    2. In new file, delete all that will not delete the shingles of which you are trying to modify the material.

    3. Export as 3DS.

    4. Go to original file.

    5. Import the 3DS file.

    6. Open the object and change the material to what you wish.

    6. Explode it.

    7. Accurately move the pieces you wish in place of the pieces which are not the material you want.

  7. I have a 3D lawn attached. It opens and modifies slowly. It takes about 20 seconds on my machine to open, modify or close.

The end product is way nicer than CA terrain using the maps I've tried but is there a compromise between quality and speed that would give a similar appearance?

This post might be more for the artistically inclined CA user.

  8. Yes thanks, I've seen that. But to my question, why don't you see fascia on roof planes that are internal to the other (planes whose baseline is on the outside edge of the wall.

My guess is you cannot have a fascia with shingle on both sides of the fascia. CA just deletes the fascia for those planes internal to those which do have a fascia. Yet, on those for which CA deleted the fascia, there still exist a modifier for fascia height. Does it really mean the height of the edge where a fascia would have been had the plane been the outer most plane?

  9. Happy Holidays to all CA forum members.

Not sure if a personal msg is allowed on this forum so I will throw in a quick question.

    Quick Question:

All roof planes are either over the wall or internal to the wall.

All roof planes can be modified in terms of things like baseline, fascia ridge and pitch.

A plane inside a wall does not show a fascia but is it still related to a fascia wrt height modifier?

And if an internal plane has say... six sides, how do you tell which side relates to the modifiers?
