I am attaching a plan where my footings are all solid lines, even though they are dashed lines in the specifications box. How do I change them to dashed lines?
Also, can a footing, independent of the wall it supports be re-configured. I want to create an extension of the main footing which will support a concrete pier for a deck. I will place the pier manually. Alternately, can I create a pilaster on the exterior of the foundation where the top of the pilaster is "x" inches below the main foundation wall?It can be seen on the foundation plan view in the front deck area.
Thanks in advance.

We are adding the ability to move newel posts in X16 (due out in late Q2). They can be repositioned with in the railing using a new move tool found in the edit toolbar or by clicking on the newel and pressing the tab key. Here’s a brief video.
Great!

Lane,
Funny, but I was dealing with this very same issue earlier today for a breezeway. I believe the answer is no.
To my knowledge there are 2 two methods to control spacing:
1) Turn off railing columns / balusters and place the posts separately / manually.
2) Break the railings into separate lengths (break the rails and then flip the rail so it does not auto-heal back together). You can then control the post interval spacing for each defined length.
Here's the breezeway I was working on today. I broke the initial 4 railing runs into more segments to better control the spacing (A, B , etc.) and to make the spacing match on both sides.
Jim
Thanks!

Thanks! That was a lot less painful than I thought it would be.

Hello Again
Is there (there has to be, Chief is a CAD Drafting program) a dialog box or other way of accurately spacing porch posts, when none of the posts will be equally spaced apart?
Thanks in advance,
Lane

As far as I know, you can't. The stair defaults are set to "automatic heights" and I can't find anyway to turn this off. Most of the time you shouldn't need to because the stair should just go from floor to floor and automatically adjust the riser height so that it works. Are you trying to do something special?
No, nothing special, I was setting defaults for a bunch of things and I thought it would be nice to have the stairs always default to the correct height.
Why does chief even have a default height if you cannot adjust it to the conditions you want?

You probably just need to turn off the jamb. If the door size "excludes" the jamb, and you have a jamb, the program will use the size of the jamb as the minimums for the rough opening.

In all my time framing, we made the rough opening the called size plus whatever vertical trim was being used to trim out the door so that the final finished rough opening was the actual door size.
For example and 8–0 door was actually 8’-3” RO because we used a 2 x 8 to wrap the doors, thus making the final rough opening from finished surface, 8’-0”
I’ve never made the framed rough opening the exact door size because then trimming out that opening would be wrong when looking at the garage door.
is this how garage doors are framed in your region? It seems I learn something new every day.
That's what I want to do. the RO is the actual door size. But chief wants to add an extra 1/2"

In the template plan I am setting up, I have the Default 1st and 2nd floor joists set @ 9-1/2", both with a 3/4" Sub-Floor.
The ceiling height for both floors is set @ 97-1/8", so the total rise, 1st to 2nd floor is 107-3/8".
In the Stair Default dialog box, the stair height is set at 121-1/2", and apparently this cannot be changed in the stair dialog box.
So, how do I change the stair default height to 97-1/8".
Next, in the Default settings for garage doors, the Rough Opening should be the same as the door size, but the program adds a "minimum" for the rough opening. How do I eliminate the additional space so the rough opening size is the actual door size?
Thanks in advance,Lane

Found it.

The text size is correct, but the circle around the text needs to be smaller.

My electrical labels somehow changed their size for the 2nd floor layout. The 1st and 2nd floors did not change.
So now I need to change the label size for the electrical labels. Where is the magic button to do this?
Thanks in advance.Lane

This mornings agita is two fold.
1. How do I stop dimensions from changing size when I zoom in and zoom out?
2. How do I get labels to show for doors in an elevation view? The window labels populate, but not the door labels. Everything checked for the windows is checked for the doors. The plan file is attached. Look at either Elevation 1 or Front ElevationThanks,

Where do I find the dialog box to change the size of the roof plane pitch and arrow labels?
Thanks.

I want to create a bay window in this foundation.
The problem is I cannot maintain the wall lengths when I go to connect the walls.
I have attached a screen shot of what I have to work with and what I want to to is this:
Walls 1 & 2 are to maintain their position, angle, and length.
Move wall 3, so point B of Wall 3 Connects to Point A of Wall 1 without changing the length of either Wall 1 or Wall 3.
Move Wall 4 so point D of Wall 4 connects to Point C of Wall 2 without changing the length of either wall 2 or wall 4.
Move and adjust the length of Wall 5 so point G connects to Point E and Point H connects to Point F.
(points being the corners of the walls)
Thanks in advance.Lane

I typed in mucho notes. Some which go with all plans, some for plans in particular jurisdictions who want to see specific notes for their department. Some for Energy Code, some for Stretch Energy Code, some because one architect (who stamps the plans) wants them, some because one Engingger (who stamps the plans) wants them....its a process.

The roof is building at the height of the Room, not the wall.
Your walls have been modified in camera/elevation views to be a certain height, which isn't a great way to go about it.
Set your ceiling heights and let your room tell the walls where to build.
But for starters, Edit -> Reset to Defaults
Fix the issue, then set your rooms' heights, then build roof planes.
That' did it, thanks!

Made you a quick video...there are a number of issues;
Thanks a million for posting this. I have framed probably 500 homes and been using Chief since the late 90's and never knew the subfloor was not part of framing.
As for the wall heights, resetting them and then changing the ceiling heights in each room did the trick. -
That's it. Thanks

I drew a roof plane, then before I finished the roof I looked at it in 3D and for some reason it is not building over the top of the wall. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? The file is attached.
Thanks,

The goal is to show both the stairs from the first floor to the second floor, and from the second floor to the loft in plan view.

Is there a way to show (plan view) stairs on the second floor and first floor at the same time?
Thanks,
Lane
