Auto Truss creation in Chief, shear surfaces instead of compression fits.
IvanCyr replied to IvanCyr's topic in General Q & A
Thx Richard for providing some feedback. I was hoping Chief would "create" some simple type truss I suppose....at least with some minimalistic reality to the load bearing surfaces! There are about 7 different trusses due to the dormers....so cut and paste is of little value. I agree about the user defined roof edge angle....it would be nice. Ivan Might anyone else have a different workaround or a preset/default input that they could suggest? Thx in advance. -

Hi Shane. First post had layout files....the second post in is "me" again....with the .plan file attached in a zipped folder. Was that what you were looking for? Ivan -

2nd try.....please find attached a zip folder with the plan file. Ivan ZippedFileF.zip -
Good day, I do mainly modelling in Chief and my framing expert on Chief is away on vacation. I was wondering if I could solicit some assistance. It is a framing question regarding why Chief builds the trusses shown on page A7 of the attached file the way it does and how I can force the software to build it differently. Effectively, looking at the layout page A7 or the quick screen shot provided in the attachment below will indicate that the trusses are loaded at their bases as a shear stress. Clearly a compression fit would provide a more structurally sound design. The next joint above is auto generated in a similar manner. Is there a quick fix to auto generate the trusses in a more favourable manner? I would attach the plans.....but for some reason it won't upload (it is a very small cabin type design)....I'm sure there's a reason that I've simply forgotten. I'll look into why that is.....why it won't upload....not why I've forgotten cuz I'm sure age might have something to do with it! Thanks, Ivan BunkieF.layout

Show short wall to butt against longer wall in plan view.
IvanCyr replied to IvanCyr's topic in General Q & A
Ah....that will be a tip to remember for the future! Thx so much Michael! -
Hi, This is likely a real amateur question, but I was wondering how one can show in plan view how two shorter walls of a rectangular room butt against the longer walls of the same rectangular room? I've tried to color the two walls differently using a "copy" of the wall and it was the longer walls that show butted against the shorter. I just need the opposite to happen. Open to ideas. Thanks in advance. Ivan

This might be too late....but just in case....here's my steps. 1. 3ds exports are from the camera view. If the layer is turned off, then no export. Check to ensure your layer is turned on. 2. You may have run into a max vertex error. If the object reaches the maximum, it will not export....ever. Go to DAE export, however I find the 3ds nomenclature useful in post production which seems to be lost in DAE. 3. Export DAE. Good luck. Ivan

Yeah Scott...I just typed up a long response with pics to the zipped file....it is not working as you stated yet is was clearly working from your screen shots.....unless you also are a Photoshop Guru! Might just "fix it" with PS....won't be the first time, nor the last. :-) It would still be very interesting to have "the fix" with a couple clicks of a button. In the actual building, it is considerably more complex. The roof baseline height is a couple feet lower just like it is in the example here but the roof pitch is considerably steeper crossing the higher roof plane so I actually need the attic wall to "flip" the outside siding from one side to the other. I considered a "Wall Covering" but you can't quite define the triangular areas effectively. Pretty easy to fix this using PS but quite another for construction documentation. Grrrrr.....
-
Thx Greg. Let me confirm what you mean. The initial room partition wall was an interior wall. I "locked" the attic wall to the lower. With your comment, I went back and redefined that lower wall to be the same as the attic wall, locked it, and tried again....still not working. I see Curt, you took another stab at it. Thx for your time. I suspect it is something fairly simple but perhaps you're right...another coffee!!
-
Thanks for the responses. Curt: No it made no change. Alan: The material painter will change the whole material....sure the inside might look good, but then the outside is clad with drywall. Doesn't do much to fix the hole!! LOL Shane: I put this together in under a minute to showcase the issue. You could too; 4 walls divided by a room divider. Make both end walls gable with the autoroof. Shrink them to the divider, copy, flip and paste the roof and lower it 24" and make the room under it soffit for a ceiling. Voila....probably took me longer to type this up.... I'm still open to more ideas!

See attached pics. Is there a simple way to create an attic wall that reverses? I suspect not. However, I've attached a couple pics which I'm trying to put together. Effectively, I have two rooms. The room above the lower ceiling height uses the soffit surface for a ceiling. There are two issues. I would like to solve both. First, the attic wall starts at the top of the higher ceiling producing a "hole" which you can see on the double picture with the red circle and the red arrow. Second, the interior attic wall is showing the exterior wall surface. I need it obviously to show interior surface inside, and then exterior outside. Without building PS everywhere, what might you experts suggest? Thanks. Ivan

How about while doing a walk through regarding issues with z fighting. I'm doing a rather large plot...an aerial view with 7 structures on it. You can't "Edit Active Camera"...it is greyed out in this case. Any pointers?

Hi again, Just an update. Still working through model particulars and volume/frequency requirements. I'll update within 2 weeks time.
-
Thank you for all who have replied. I am still verifying details for the final product requirements for the work. I suspect I will know by 20 Nov. I will post again with an update. Again, only those considered will be contacted. Thank you for your interest.

Good day, I have some overflow requirements that I am considering moving to other venues for the time being. I am looking for homes to be modeled in 3D based on completed construction drawings. They need to be accurate to +/- 1 inch. You will be provided with construction drawings and plan requirements to set default values, or a generic X6 plan file with defaults set. Payment will be based on finished sq ft area of home under a roof. Please provide your estimate on a per sq ft basis in US dollars or if Canadian, Cdn dollars. Model requirements are: Exterior complete with roof. All walls complete with any door, openings, windows, inset shelving etc. Stairs, railings complete. Note: Moldings, tray ceilings etc are not required to be modeled. No cabinets, showers, toilets etc are required. If you are interested please contact me at the information listed below. Use the contact form on the webpage to send me any information. Referrals, please post here as you wish or contact me as stated above. Please provide references. I encourage any information from other users with references. Only those considered will be contacted. Thank you for your time. Ivan Cyr visuel Inteck3d http://www.inteck3d.com

Barton, I use a plethora of softwares to get this to a video stage...the limited vertex export function out of CA causes me a bit of grief such that I require alternative solutions to high poly count items. I did just update the video to remove one poor quality clip of the mstr bedroom and bath and put in 5 higher pixel count renders to behave better while using the zoom. I think it looks nicer now.... The other video I have up on you tube Jim is using CA walkthrough and Windows movie maker. Much poorer quality in my view....although my client was ecstatic. He loved the Spanish signs in the structure.

Hi Jim, Glad you liked it. The video uses a 3rd party software....and A LOT of computing power.
