Newbie - Siding colors keeps changing back

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am running HD Suite 2016.   I started my first plan and the exterior walls were all the default tan siding.  I have changed the default settings, materials, walls (exterior) to red siding (which I want.).    I then also selected all the exterior walls of my plan (by selecting just outside of the roofline), open object, exterior room, exterior walls, edit material - I choose red.    The siding then all changes to the desired red while I continue to work with the file.  All is good until I save the plan and exit.  Then when I re open it, it is back to tan.   Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong !  thanks....

Chief Architect and Home Designer software always can be counted to ONLY follow default settings. In Suite 2016 you go to "Edit - Default Settings- Materials - Exterior Walls" to set that default setting. Also under "Edit - Default Settings - Wall - Exterior Wall"  those two settings need to be set into agreement.

The next thing many new users do is to use the Materials Eye Dropper and Panter tools without first carefully studying the four modes of their use before making a mess of their plan files. It seems intuitive to use the eye dropper and painter but you can cause no end of trouble by using these two tools without study.

BTW this forum is for Chief Architect Premier users only, Home Designer users have their own forum called "Home Talk"  https://hometalk.chiefarchitect.com/ .   Many users here have never seen Home Designer Suite.

thanks, I will re-post in the proper forum !

(I already had the color I want selected in default settings, materials, exterior walls.  However, when I go to default settings, walls, exterior wall, it does not allow any material choice, just "siding '6" as an example.)

      Hello!

I'm hoping that someone can help me out here. I frequently use the same materials and I was wondering if there is any way to change the default textures/ colors so that every new project starts off the same. For example: on exterior walls CA defaults to blue lap siding; bathrooms and kitchen default to a cream tile; walls, windows, and doors default to Brite paint; etc.

I'd like to change these so that I can save myself time. Can someone explain how to do that, please?

      Thank you!

I am working on an ADU and the county requirements say it needs to be 900 square feet or less. On one hand, the county code says:
The ADU cannot exceed 50% of the square footage of the habitable area of primary residence or 900 square feet, whichever is smaller

I have 3 questions:  Is "Habitable Area" determined on dimensions from Interior or Exterior walls when it comes to the 900 square feet requirement? Does this vary city to city or is there a code standard?

My current plan has a total of 900 square feet. I also need to know if this total is based on a measurement from Interior walls or Exterior walls? How do I confirm? Is there a default setting where you set this to factor for living area calculations?

Is there a standard in the IBC which states that the living area is always calculated on Interiors or Exterior walls?

I will need to reduce my footprint if I find the requirement is based on exterior walls dimensions.

Any experience with this code situation and knowledge on how to confirm this calc within my settings would be greatly appreciated.

I'm fighting chief here with the wall/ceiling/roof intersection of a 1.5 story room. I've got a nested gable and Chief just doesn't want to cooperate with me where the forward gable and attic wall of the rearward gable basically bisect this exterior wall.  A picture is worth a thousand words, so see the two below for clarification.

The problem I'm having is that when I drag the interior side of the wall up to meet the ceiling it pulls the exterior side of the wall above the roof plane.  If I drag the exterior of the wall down, it pulls the interior down away from the ceiling and leaves a gap in the wall (or if I pull it down too far chief tries to build an attic wall in the gap and screws everything up).  I tried to split the wall polyline, as you can see in the picture, but Chief seems to just ignore the split.

Very frustrating and I'm not sure what to do here.  I'm not very experienced with building 1.5 story homes in this program.  I built the first two floors and then did all the roofs with manual planes. I'm working in v X9. Plan is attached.

I'm a new CA user and I'm attempting to draw plans for an addition. I have an exterior stucco wall with two windows and a door. After the remodel, this exterior wall will become and interior wall, and the windows and door will be removed. In this new INTERIOR wall there will be a new 6' opening that will occupy the same space as one of the previous windows and door.

The problem I'm having is creating a drawing for the building department that shows both floor plan layouts, with both the new and existing floor plans. As soon as I update the window type, or the window/door space, it changes all the drawings that I've created.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
