ChristianA
I am a relatively new Chief user and have been struggling with a type of roof where there is a cathedral ceiling and an overlay roof above it. Part of cathedral roof will have no overhang and the exterior wall will continue up to the overlay roof. I can never get this to frame clean and I'm not sure how to build the wall above the cathedral roof. I do this type of roof quite often and would love a quicker, cleaner workflow. Please see the attached image. I am have trouble attaching the plan file because it's too large. Thanks in advance! Christian

ChristianA
Hi Doug, That looks right for sure. Does the rafter sit on top of the wall plates or does it hang off the inside face of stud?
Doug_N
Hi Christian, You would have to do a bit of cad work for the sections, but I would recommend the rafters would sit on blocking between the studs and some fancy Simpson hardware to take the load. It might also be possible to do this with a ledger above the ceiling. I just spent a few moments to sort out the roof manually. ChristianA
Hi Doug, Thanks for fiddling around with the roof, I appreciate your time on it. I kinda figured that to have walls raise up to the upper overlay roof, the structural cathedral roof can not lap over the top plates of the wall. Regarding the framing, I will tweak the framing later so that it sits on the top plates of the wall. I don't want to mess around with hanging the roof framing off of the wall or getting into penetrating the wall cavity. I know how they will build it, they'll put up the 9/0 walls, build the cathedral roof, frame the overlay, then sister some studs next to the rafter seats for the sheathing attachment on the wall in question.
