Retrofit condo building. How flash?

Hello,

I am not builder but own condo in MI and sit on board that is self managed where we hire contractors etc directly for repairs etc.

 

We are replacing siding through complex and there are many instances where hardie board will need to be flashed into existing exterior.  Trying to get some guidance as to proper way to flash these transitions.  Z flashing has not been used at these spots as no way to get upper part of flashing under existing.  Contractor used a u shaped flashing that rests over top of new hardie at the joint but nothing under the existing above to lock out weather.

Any help great appreciated

Henry,

 

U-shaped flashing at the top of siding sounds wrong, but a little hard to tell from the photos.

 

In any case, James Hardie website has details available showing proper installation which should give you direction:
