How do I manually draw a wall mounted stair handrail with returns

Hello, I am trying to manually draw a wall-mounted stair hand rail with returns to the wall. I can use a molding to draw it in an elevation view, but when I add the 90-degree returns, it rotates the molding and doesn't look right. I also tried to draw it in the floor plan view, but I can't figure out how to get it to match the stair angle. I know that the default stair setup will allow the returns, but it still doesn't look correct, and honestly, I am trying to do most of my rail work manually. Any thoughts?

Try making a symbol of the railing molding you want, doing a 2D molding polyline, select, make symbol, and then see if you can rotate the symbol the way you want in the symbol's spec dialog for 3D.  I threw on onto a barn wall as shown.
